Epoch Extraction by Phase Modelling of Speech Signals

Epochs are instants of significant excitation of vocal-tract system in speech production process. In this paper, we attempt to extract information about epochs from phase spectra of speech signals. The phase spectrum of speech is modelled as the response of an allpass (AP) filter, and the resulting error signal is used for epoch extraction. The parameters of AP model are estimated by imposing sparsity constraints on the error signal. The error signal, thus obtained, exhibits prominent peaks at epoch locations. The epochal candidates obtained from the error signal are refined using a dynamic programming algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is consistent across genders and is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods.     

Tensile, creep, and ABI tests on sn5%sb solder for mechanical property evaluation

Sn5%Sb is one of the materials considered for replacing lead containing alloys for soldering in electronic packaging. We evaluated the tensile properties of the bulk material at varied strain-rates and temperatures (to 473K) to determine the underlying deformation mechanisms. Stress exponents of about three and seven were observed at low and high stresses, respectively, and very low activation energies for creep (about 16.7 and 37.7 kJ/mole) were noted. A maximum ductility of about 350% was noted at ambient temperature. Creep tests performed in the same temperature regime also showed two distinct regions, albeit with slightly different exponents (three and five) and activation energy (about 54.4 kJ/mole). Ball indentation tests were performed on the shoulder portions of the creep samples (prior to creep tests) using a Stress-Strain Microprobe^@ (Advanced Technology Corporation) at varied indentation rates (strain-rates). The automated ball indentation (ABI) data were at relatively high strain-rates; however, they were in excellent agreement with creep data, while both these results deviated from the tensile test data. Work is planned to perform creep at high stresses at ambient and extend ABI tests to elevated temperatures.     

Effects of granisetron with doxorubicin or epirubicin on ECG intervals

Commercially available serotonin-type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists (ondansetron, granisetron, and tropisetron) have shown no clinically significant adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. In the dose-ranging evaluation of dolasetron, computer-generated ECGs revealed clinically asymptomatic prolongations of ECG intervals. We performed a clinical trial in which the possible changes in ECG intervals following a single 3-mg i.v. injection of granisetron and an injection of either doxorubicin or epirubicin were registered using computerized ECG analysis in cancer patients. A total of 30 patients who were designated to receive 3 mg granisetron i.v. for the prophylaxis of emesis induced by doxorubicin or epirubicin were entered into the study. Computer-generated ECG tracings were obtained before treatment, following the injection of 3mg granisetron, and immediately after doxorubicin or epirubicin injection. The mean PR interval duration increased from 160 to 166 ms after granisetron infusion (P=0.02). Doxorubicin and epirubicin did not potentiate this change. There was no statistically significant change in cardiac rhythm, QRS duration, or QTc intervals. The observed minor changes in the PR time following i.v. injection of granisetron do not seem to be of clinical relevance.     

Pressure-induced phase transition of quartz-type GaPO4

This study attempted to identify the determinants of acute lower respiratory-tract infections (ALRI) among children under five years of age, by comparing hundred children hospitalized with ALRI with a control group. Data on socio-demographic, biological and environmental characteristics were collected by interviewing mothers and anthropometric measurements were carried out to assess the nutritional status of the children. Risk of disease in the presence of each exposure was calculated in the univariate analysis and the best explanatory variables among them were identified in the multivariate analysis. The following variables were found to increase the risk of ALRI: (1) history of wheezing, (2) low birth weight, (3) passive smoking, (4) male sex, (5) delivery by cesarean section (6) sharing of sleeping space, (7) not being exclusively breast fed upto the completion of four months, (8) stunting, (9) having pets. The findings highlight some simple strategies which would help in prevention of ALRI.
