Effect of penetrating radiation on skeletal muscles of rats in weightlessness

The isoenzyme composition of lactate dehydrogenase of soleus and plantaris muscles of rats flown for 20.5 d aboard the biosatellite Cosmos-690 and irradiated with a dose of 800 rad was investigated. The muscles exposed to weightlessness per se and weightlessness combined with radiation showed similar changes in their carbohydrate metabolism. On return to 1 G, readaptation of irradiated rats developed less rapidly than of animals exposed to weightlessness alone.     

Integrated processing of fresh Indian sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) berries and chemical evaluation of products

An efficient pilot‐scale process was developed to produce nutraceutical products from fresh sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) berries. Fresh berries were subjected to high‐pressure dewatering using a continuous screw press. The separated liquid phase containing 80–90% of pulp oil was clarified at 80 °C and centrifuged to obtain pulp oil, clear juice and sludge. The pulp oil yield was 2.7–2.8% of fresh berry weight with 66–70% extraction efficiency. The pulp oil was remarkably rich in carotenoids (2450–2810 mg kg^?1), tocopherols (1409–1599 mg kg^?1) and sterols (4096–4403 mg kg^?1), with a characteristic fresh berry flavour and 16:1 as the major fatty acid (45.6–49.1%). The clear juice obtained was free from oil and contained high amounts of vitamin C (1683–1840 mg kg^?1) and phytochemicals such as polyphenols (2392–2821 mg kg^?1) and flavonoids (340–401 mg kg^?1). Isorhamnetin (251–310 mg kg^?1) was the major flavonoid in the juice, along with quercetin (77–81 mg kg^?1) and kaempherol (12–16 mg kg^?1). The juice was very acidic (pH 3), with high concentrations of organic acids (30.8–36.0 g kg^?1). High‐performance liquid chromatography profiling of organic acids revealed quinic acid (18.1–19.9 g kg^?1) as the major acid in the juice. Movement disorders in the context of P.K. Anokhin's theory of functional systems

The authors' own findings and the data available in the literature as to movement diseases (MD) in animals and man were reviewed in the context of P. K. Anokhin's theory of functional systems. The functional system of the human body's gravity center is detailed. There is evidence for that disintegration processes underlying MD first occur in the mnestic sphere since due to genetic and/or ontogenetic causes, memory has no preserved no motor programme required to achieve the end net efficiency of performance of this functional system,--to maintain the definite position of the gravity center of the body and its related vegetative status upon stress-induced vestibular exposures. Based on the above concepts of the pathogenesis of MD, its preventive measures have been proposed and tested, which include drug (nootropic agents) and non-drug (a special complex of physical exercises for children aged 2 to 7 years, which will form permanent motor programs in memory in definite periods of their ontogenesis) measures.     

Sotahexal pharmacodynamics in patients with ischemic heart disease

Therapeutic and prophylactic antiarrhythmic efficacy of sotalol hydrochloride (Sotahexal, "Hexal", Germany) and its effects in intracardiac hemodynamics and ECG parameters were evaluated in 95 patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). The highest response to the drug was observed in ventricular extrasystoles, arterial flutter and fibrillation. Acute episodes of arrhythmia are managed by bolus administration of Sotahexal [correction of Hexal]. In this case greater risk of side effects exists. It is desirable to decide on the drug dose, mode of administration on the individual basis with due consideration of the risks and dangers which could be avoided in case of adequate instrumental control.     

Experience in the health promotion of children in opisthorchiasis foci

The analysis covers 2555 appendectomies, performed on an emergency and scheduled surgery basis in the clinic of emergency surgery.--State University Hospital "Queen Giovanna", Sofia, over the period 1985-1997. Relaparotomy is necessitated in 28 cases (1.09 per cent) because of various postoperative complications. Data are presented on the number of relaparotomies, done under conditions of emergency and scheduled surgery, and with a special reference to the pathoanatomical character of appendicitis. The underlying causes of undertaking relaparotomy and postoperative lethality are analyzed. As shown by the obtained results post-relaparotomy mortality rate is the highest after primary operation for destructive form of appendicitis and advanced form of peritonitis.
