Plasma norepinephrine, epinephrine, and thyroid hormone interactions in severely burned patients

In this prospective study of thyroid catecholamine interactions, 15 severely burned patients were divided into two groups. Nine patients receiving 200 micrograms/day of triiodothyronine constituted the T3-treated group. Eight additional patients constituted the untreated group. Mean serum concentrations of T3 were significantly lower in the untreated group than in the treated group. Mean serum thyroxine (T4) concentrations were significantly higher in the untreated group than in the treated group. The mean plasma norepinephrine concentration in the untreated group was significantly greater than that of the treated group. In the untreated group, log plasma norepinephrine correlated inversely with serum T3. Similarly, in the untreated group, log plasma epinephrine correlated inversely with serum T3. Metabolic rates were not different between groups. These data suggest that a reciprocal relationship exists between plasma concentration of T3 and both norepinephrine and epinephrine in untreated burn patients and that treatment with the metabolically active hormone, triiodothyronine, does not alter the level of hypermetabolism accompanying thermal injury.     

Effect of levamisole on pokeweed mitogen stimulation of immunoglobulin production in vitro

The effects of levamisole (LMS) on immunoglobulin (Ig) production were studied in vitro using peripheral blood lymphocytes from normal subjects stimulated with pokeweed mitogen (PWM). Cells were cultured for 9 days with varying concentrations of LMS and PWM, and immunoglobulin secretion in the supernatants was quantified by solid phase radioimmunoassay. The results showed that 1) the effect of LMS in vitro depends upon the degree of lymphocyte stimulation by PWM. When PWM stimulation is optimal, typical pharmacologic concentrations of LMS (0.5 micro/ml) decrease both IgM and IgG production by 50%. However, at lower suboptimal doses of PWM, LMS, at similar concentrations, enhances immunoglobulin production by 24% (p less than 0.01). Unstimulated lymphocytes are not affected by LMS. 2) The target cell upon which LMS acts is present among a T subpopulation that lacks the Fc receptor for aggregated rabbit IgG (T gamma -negative). We suggest that the diverse effects of LMS on autoimmune disease in vivo may depend upon both the size and degree of activation of the T gamma -negative lymphocyte pool.     

Extraversion, neuroticism, and motor learning.

"The Extraversion and Neuroticism scales of the Maudsley Personality Inventory were administered to 72 college students who were dichotomized on the basis of their scale scores. The inverted alphabet printing task was used to provide measures of motor learning performance. Analyses of variance of the motor learning scores showed that the women learned significantly faster than the men, but the main effects of Extraversion and Neuroticism were not significant." 17 refs. Inter-transverse-mode injection locking and subthreshold gainmeasurements in a CO2 waveguide laser

A higher order CO₂ waveguide laser resonator mode has been studied both above and below threshold, by reinjecting a frequency shifted portion of the laser output back into the resonator. The relative reinjected (autodyne) gain profile in the vicinity of the subthreshold transverse mode is shown to shift in frequency, reduce in spectral width, and increase in magnitude as the subthreshold mode is brought nearer to threshold by tilting one of the resonator mirrors. Once above threshold, inter-transverse-mode injection locking has been demonstrated, and close to the locking-point higher order terms from the nonlinear interaction are clearly evident     

Vicarious instigation and conditioning of facial expressive and autonomic responses to a model's expressive display of pain.

In 2 experiments, 35 undergraduates participated in the application of a long-interstimulus-interval differential conditioning paradigm with a confederate's videotaped expression of pain serving as the UCS. Facial EMG signals and skin conductance were recorded. Clear evidence of vicarious autonomic instigation and some evidence of facial excitation were obtained in Exp I, but vicarious autonomic and facial muscle conditioning were obtained only for the 50% of the Ss who were aware of the contingency between the CS+ and the model's pain. In Exp II, steps were taken to increase awareness of the contingency, and significant autonomic and facial muscle instigation and conditioning occurred. Both the vicariously instigated and conditioned autonomic responses involved skin conductance increases, but facial responses to the model's pain were different from conditioned facial responses. Autonomic and facial muscle data suggest that Ss were behaving as though they were anticipating shock when the CS+ was displayed to the model, and as though they were in pain when the model was being shocked. Vicariously aroused emotional reactions thus appear to be similar to those that would be elicited if the S were directly anticipating and receiving shock. The diversity of potential cheese ripening characteristics of lactic acid starter bacteria: 2. The levels and subcellular distributions of peptidase and esterase activities

The levels and subcellular distributions of various peptidase and esterase activities in a range of lactococcal and Streptococcus thermophilus strains were investigated. There was no correlation between the levels of the enzymes in the different strains and the ability of the strains to produce acid when grown in milk. While considerable differences between individual strains were apparent, average levels of X-prolyldipeptidyl aminopeptidase, dipeptidase and tripeptidase were similar in the Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis and L. lactis subsp. cremoris strains studied, while that of lysylaminopeptidase (i.e. activity assayed using lysine p-nitroanilide as substrate) in the L. lactis subsp. cremoris strains was approximately double that in the L. lactis subsp. lactis strains. The average levels of lysylaminopeptidase and X-prolyldipeptidyl aminopeptidase in the S. thermophilus strains studied were similar to those in the L. lactis subsp. cremoris strains, while the average levels of dipeptidase and tripeptidase were considerably lower. All peptidases studied were recovered predominantly in the cytoplasmic fraction, although in a few strains there was some evidence to suggest that a part of the tripeptidase activity may be associated with cell structures comprising the particulate fraction. The levels of esterase activity in the strains were considerably different between strains. However, the average level of esterase activity detected in the two lactococcal subspecies was similar, while that in the S. thermophilus strains was more than double the lactococcal average. The subcellular distribution of the esterase in all strains studied showed that a significant proportion of the activity is located on the cell surface.     

Circular array of outward sloping monopoles for vehicular diversityantennas

A circular array of outward-sloping monopoles is analyzed as a diversity antenna for vehicle rooftop mounting. The monopoles are assumed to approximate minimum scattering antennas, have sinusoidal current distributions, and reside on an infinite, perfectly conducting ground plane. The envelopes of the received signals are considered Rayleigh distributed. The advantage of the array configuration is that the feedpoint spacing can be made almost arbitrarily small, even for a large number of branches. A three-element array with element lengths of 0.6 wavelengths and feedpoint spacing 0.1 wavelengths operating at 463 MHz was field-tested and the results are in good agreement with the analysis     

Park Olof Davidson: 1937-1980.

The distinguished career of Park Davidson came to a tragic end when he and his wife, Sheena, were killed in an automobile accident on December 21, 1980. The impact of this shattering event is not yet fully comprehended by the community of psychologists in Canada, but we know how sorely his friendship, inspiration, and guidance will be missed. Park had served as Editor of the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science since 1974. Park enjoyed many other distinctions as a professional psychologist, academician, and research scientist. He served a distinguished term as President of the Canadian Psychological Association. Still a young man, he had already been President of the Psychological Association of Alberta and Chairman of the Advisory Council of Provincial Associations of Psychology, in addition to providing wise counsel for many other professional organizations, government agencies, community organizations, and universities. As well as being editor of several of these volumes, Park was a vigorous research scientist whose interests and publications ranged through stress management, pain, alcoholism, parent-infant interaction, and programme evaluation. Transmission of Circular Polarized Waves Between Elevated Antenna

Transmission of circularly polarized signals between elevated antenna over lossy earth is discussed for a frequency of 100 MHz. By decomposing the circularly polarized signals into vertical and horizontal components and considering only direct and ground-reflected waves, it is shown that for fixed transmitting antenna height and horizontal separation, the field intensity at the receiving antenna varies sinusoidally with receiving antenna height. Reference curves of field strength versus height are included for typical tower heights, separations, and soil conditions. Comments on FCC power height curves are also included.     

A method for defining competency in Pediatrics

In 1972 the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) initiated studies leading to a report which identifies the important components of competency needed in the practice of pediatrics. The development of the report involved a group process engaging ABP board members and examiners. The outcome has been (a) the delineation of a process for establishing definitions of competency in a medical discipline; (b) the development of a framework for specifying the abilities needed to perform the tasks required of pediatricians; (c) an elaboration of samples of pediatric subjects to which these abilities and tasks are relevant; and (d) the development of a basis for choice of methods to use for purposes of certification.
