Sepsis puerperalis caused by a genotypically proven cat-derived Pasteurella multocida strain

We report on partial dup(22q), growth deficiency, and the facioauriculovertebral sequence including hemifacial microsomia, cleft lip and palate, preauricular tags, and hearing loss in one patient. No endocrine or systemic cause for growth deficiency was identified. The case illustrates applicability of chromosome analysis in syndrome-associated growth failure, and a previously unreported associated chromosome abnormality.     

On the wear behavior of doubly-oriented polymers. I. Nylon 6

Wear behavior correlations with morphology and orientation directions have been established from commercially produced nylon 6 with different draw ratios between 1 and 7 approximately. The wear rate is least in a direction perpendicular to the draw direction for highly drawn samples. It correlates with surface microstructure and the inherent molecular characteristics induced by sample preparation. Well-characterized polymer specimens were used in this investigation.     

Passive immune globulin therapy in the SIV/macaque model: early intervention can alter disease profile

In this study, we investigated the impact of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) after high dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) in 25 patients with refractory or relapsed Hodgkin's disease (HD) (11 patients) and non Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) (14 patients). 48% of patients had resistant disease, 84% achieved complete remission after ABMT. rIL-2 was started at a median of 54 days post-transplant and consisted of a first cycle of 5 days followed by 4 cycles of 2 days every other week. Patients received a mean of 160 x 10(6) IU/m2 rIL-2 and hematological toxicity was moderate and transient. None of the 5 evaluable patients with measurable disease responded to rIL-2. After a 5 year median follow-up, the probability of survival and DFS is 72% (HD: 73% and NHL: 70%, p = NS) and 45% (HD: 36% and NHL: 48%, p = NS) respectively. These somewhat encouraging results warrant further evaluation of rIL-2 after ABMT in controlled studies, especially in NHL patients stratified for previous chemosensitivity.     

Current aspects of thrombolytic therapy in unstable angina pectoris

In the last years, several studies addressed the role of the different antithrombotic therapeutics in unstable angina pectoris. Acetylsalicylic acid still is the standard treatment reducing the rate of death and myocardial infarction by 50% in the first six months. Ticlopidin has no clinical effect in the first six days and therefore is not suited for treatment in the acute phase. Unfractionated heparin has an additional favourable effect when added to aspirin. Low molecular weight-heparin is at least as effective as UF-heparin. Direct thrombin-inhibitors (hirudin, hirudin-analoga) seem to be comparable to UF-heparin. Plasminogen-activators should not be given in unstable angina, as they show a tendency to worsen the clinical outcome. GP IIb/IIIa-antagonists (antibodies, synthetic antagonists) significantly improve the clinical effects of aspirin. When combined with a reduced dose of heparin, their favourable effect remains unchanged, while bleeding complications are reduced to a minimum.     

Nucleotide sequence and analysis of the centromeric region of yeast chromosome IX

We have determined the nucleotide sequence of a cosmid (pIX338) containing the centromere region of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) chromosome IX. The complete nucleotide sequence of 33·8 kb was obtained by using an efficient directed sequencing strategy in combination with automated DNA sequencing on the A.L.F. DNA sequencer. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of 17 open reading frames (ORFs), four of them previously known yeast genes (sly12, pan1, sts1 and prl1), a tRNA gene and the centromere motif. Exhaustive database searches detected sequence homologues of known function for as many as 14 of the 17 ORFs. These include a mammalian tyrosine kinase substrate; the Escherichia coli cell cycle protein MinD; the human inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase (gene OCRL) involved in Lowe's syndrome, a developmental disorder; and helicases, for which the new yeast member defines a distinct DEAD/H-box subfamily. A surprisingly large fraction of the ORFs (at least six out of 17) in the centromeric region are apparently involved in RNA or DNA binding. The nucleotide sequence reported here has been submitted to the EMBL data library under the accession number X79743.     

Scalable fabrication of nanowire photonic and electronic circuits using spin-on glass

We present a method which can be used for the mass-fabrication of nanowire photonic and electronic devices based on spin-on glass technology and on the photolithographic definition of independent electrical contacts to the top and the bottom of a nanowire. This method allows for the fabrication of nanowire devices in a reliable, fast, and low cost way, and it can be applied to nanowires with arbitrary cross section and doping type (p and n). We demonstrate this technique by fabricating single-nanowire p-Si(substrate)-n-ZnO(nanowire) heterojunction diodes, which show good rectification properties and, furthermore, which function as ultraviolet light-emitting diodes.     

Mechanisms of knowledge degradation in a resource management task ¶

Previous research has focused more on learning relative to forgetting despite both being generally recognized as important human performance issues. This research pursued an improved understanding of variables that impact the effectiveness with which humans can retrieve procedural knowledge, such as mathematics or programming. Two studies reviewed yielded varying results in experiments that investigated factors that can inhibit the retrieval of procedural knowledge from memory. To explore theoretical explanations for the opposing results, 32 human participants performed a resource management task in the multi-attribute task battery (MATB) manipulating task strategy and colour symbology. Human performance resulted in significant interference effects for a switch in strategy, but not with a change in the implicit meaning of colours. Therefore, the participants’ sensitivity to the implicit meaning of visual stimuli was not as significant as a more comprehensive change in rule structure associated with procedural knowledge.
