Antiserum-agar plate method for simultaneous detection and direct isolation of Legionella species in clinical and environmental specimens

Colonies of Legionella pneumophila serotypes 1 through 6, L. micdadei, L. bozemanii, L. dumoffii, and L. gormanii, which were developed on filtered yeast extract agar containing polyvalent antiserum, were surrounded by distinct, specific precipitin rings.     

A parasitic slot array

The analysis of an endfire array of tunable parasitic slots is described. Self and mutual admittances between thin half-wavelength slots are found by an application of Babinet's Principle. To solve the circuit equations of the array, the condition is imposed that the phase velocity remain constant along the array. Then, by matrix inversion, the excitation amplitude and self-reactance of the parasitic elements are determined. The phase of the reflector is chosen to maximize the coupling between the driven element and the directors. Finally, experimental patterns are compared with computed results.     

Plantar neuroma: analysis of results following surgical excision in 145 patients

Few series deal with the long-term results of surgical exision of plantar neuromas. The results of a study with a 21.5 month average follow-up are presented. Of 145 patients undergoing surgery from 1970 to 1973, 85 returned for examination and roentgenograms. There were 13% with unsatisfactory results and 21.3% with some pain remaining. Caution should therefore be used in assuring patients of complete relief.     

Recrystallization of low-carbon titanium stabilized steel

The recrystallization kinetics and microstructure of a low-carbon titanium stabilized steel, cold rolled and annealed in the temperature interval between 800° and 1750°F, were investigated. Recrystallization followed the normal sigmoidal relationship at all temperatures; however, compared to low-carbon steel without the addition of titanium, recrystallization was severely retarded. The longer time required for recrystallization is believed to have occurred primarily as a result of the titanium in solution and to a lesser degree because of the presence of numerous stable precipitate particles. No precipitation occurred during recovery prior to recrystallization to alter the recrystallization kinetics as has been observed in aluminum killed steels. Annealing studies showed that the addition of titanium altered the recrystallization texture in a manner highly favorable for enhanced drawability (high \(\bar R\) values) resulting from an increase in the intensity of the {111～ component. Heating rate and annealing temperatures were found to exert only a small influence on the recrystallization texture. The influence of titanium on the recrystallization kinetics and grain morphology is discussed in terms of improved properties compared to rimmed and aluminum killed steel.     

Comparison of several nitrogen fertilisers applied in surface irrigation systems. II. Nitrogen transformations

The movement and transformations in the mineral N pool below the hill and furrow were studied when different N fertilisers were applied in the irrigation water on three occasions during the growth of two maize crops. They included anhydrous ammonia, ammonium sulphate, potassium nitrate and urea. These were compared with anhydrous ammonia injected below the hill before the crop was sown. The ammonium-forming fertilisers increased the mineral-N in the surface of the furrow in both seasons. However no differential adsorption of NH₄ near the surface of the furrow was observed. We have postulated that NH₄ showed preferential movement through the voids in these cracking soils and was not adsorbed at the surface as occurs on soils with discontinuous voids. The proportion of NO₃ in the profile was higher after urea application than with NH₄ sources and was consistent with urea moving further into the peds than NH₄. Nitrification of the anhydrous ammonia band below the hill was rapid in these soils. The proportion of NO₃-N in the mineral N pool below both the hill and furrow declined with time in those locations where the air-filled porosity was generally below 10%. The implications of applying various N sources in the irrigation water on the potential loss processes taking place in the soil are discussed.

The gradient of spatial auditory attention in free field: an event-related potential study

Young adult subjects attended selectively to brief noise bursts delivered in free field via a horizontal array of seven loudspeakers spaced apart by 9 degrees of angle. Frequent "standard" stimuli (90%) and infrequent "target/deviant" stimuli (10%) of increased bandwidth were delivered at a fast rate in a random sequence equiprobably from each speaker. In separate runs, the subjects' task was to selectively attend to the leftmost, center, or rightmost speaker and to press a button to the infrequent "target" stimuli occurring at the designated spatial location. Behavioral detection rates and concurrently recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) indicated that auditory attention was deployed as a finely tuned gradient around the attended sound source, thus providing support for gradient models of auditory spatial attention. Furthermore, the ERP data suggested that the spatial focusing of attention was achieved in two distinct stages, with an early more broadly tuned filtering of inputs occurring over the first 80-200 msec after stimulus onset, followed by a more narrowly focused selection of attended-location deviants that began at around 250 msec and closely resembled the behavioral gradient of target detections.
