In situ synchrotron study of the solution crystallization of ultralong alkanes from dilute solution

The crystallization from dilute solution of two long n-alkanes (C₂₄₆H₄₉₄ and C₁₆₂H₃₂₆) has been followed in real time using synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF) at Grenoble.The data confirm the existence of minima in crystallization and nucleation rates in C₂₉₄H₅₉₀. Further, the ability to record data very rapidly has allowed us to see the minimum in crystallization rate in C₁₆₂H₃₂₆ for the first time.Small changes in lattice spacing were seen during and after crystallization in all samples. These indicate that there is some perfectioning of crystals—for example the removal of cilia at the surfaces, etc.     

Mutational activation of the Cpx signal transduction pathway of Escherichia coli suppresses the toxicity conferred by certain envelope-associated stresses

Anticipation and suspicion are critical aspects to any discussion of intrauterine adhesions. Curettage between the second and fourth week postpartum is more likely to cause adhesions than is any other endometrial trauma. Infertility, recurrent abortion, or menstrual aberrations after any uterine trauma should cause the physician to suspect the presence of intrauterine adhesions. Hysterosalpingography and hysteroscopy are the ideal methods to make the diagnosis of IUA, and the latter is the safest, least traumatic, and most precise method of treating adhesions. The addition of an intrauterine splint and high-dose estrogen therapy completes the therapeutic approach. Before attempting conception the cavity should be inspected to verify its normality.     

Crystallization of hydroxybutyrate oligomers: 1. morphology and folding

Exact length hydroxybutyrate oligomers containing 24 and 32 repeat units have been prepared and their crystallization behaviour and crystal morphology observed.The oligomers form crystals from dilute solution and from the melt that have similar overall morphologies to crystals of the polymer, poly(hydroxybutyrate). Electron diffraction indicates that the chains are closely perpendicular to the basal planes of the crystals.Wide angle X-ray diffraction suggests that all crystals, no matter what their thickness, have a high degree of crystallinity and the same crystal structure.The crystals have a range of thicknesses, as measured by small angle X-ray diffraction. The most common thicknesses correspond to the extended stem length and to one half or, surprisingly, two thirds of that value. A model is proposed for the non-integer fraction crystals in which half of the chain ends are incorporated in the crystals themselves.     

The N-terminal domain of human GABA receptor rho1 subunits contains signals for homooligomeric and heterooligomeric interaction

gamma-Aminobutyric acid type C (GABAC) receptors identified in retina appear to be composed of GABA rho subunits. The purpose of this study was to localize signals for homooligomeric assembly of rho1 subunits and to investigate whether the same region contained signals for heterooligomeric interaction with rho2 subunits. In vitro translated human rho1 was shown to be membrane-associated, and proteinase K susceptibility studies indicated that the N terminus was oriented in the lumen of ER-derived microsomal vesicles. This orientation suggested the involvement of the N terminus of rho1 in the initial steps of subunit assembly. To test this hypothesis, mutants were created containing only N-terminal sequences (N-rho1) or C-terminal sequences (C-rho1) of rho1. Co-immunoprecipitation studies revealed that N-rho1, but not C-rho1, interacted with rho1 in vitro. When coexpressed in Xenopus oocytes, N-rho1 interfered with rho1 receptor formation. Together, these data suggested that signals for rho1 homooligomeric assembly reside in the N-terminal half of the subunit. Sequential immunoprecipitations were then performed upon cotranslated rho1 and rho2 subunits which demonstrated that rho1 and rho2 interacted in vitro. Co-immunoprecipitation indicated that N-rho1 specifically associated with rho2. Therefore, the N-terminal regions of rho subunits contain the initial signals for both homooligomeric and heterooligomeric assembly into receptors with GABAC properties.     

Self-linking and self-competence as dimensions of global self-esteem: initial validation of a measure

Three studies were conducted to validate the conceptualization of global self-esteem as consisting of two dimensions: a sense of social worth, or self-liking, and a sense of personal efficacy, or self-competence. In Study 1, confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the a priori structure of the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale, a self-report instrument designed to measure the two dimensions. In Study 2, a second structural analysis showed the dimensionality of Rosenberg's (1965) Self-Esteem Scale to parallel the proposed dichotomy. In Study 3, self-liking and self-competence were related to several theoretically linked constructs--depression, self-perceived abilities, and perceived parental approval--with the resulting pattern of correlations supporting their conceptualization as substantively distinct dimensions. The implications of these findings for understanding global self-esteem are discussed.
