In 1970-72, 456 (53.4%) of 854 drivers responsible for a motor vehicle accident in which either they or other persons were killed had been drinking beforehand. Of surviving culpable drivers tested for blood alcohol concentration 81.7% were found to be legally impaired; however, only 24.8% of these drivers were tested. Because surviving culpable drivers pose a possible future hazard to highway safety it is important that data on this group be collected and analysed. 相似文献

The goal of the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism is ablation of the proper amount of hyperfunctioning tissue. This paper presents our operative technique based on an experience in the treatment of 190 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. The technique is based on a complete knowledge of the anatomy of the normal parathyroid gland as well as the pathology in primary hyperparthyroidism. We also propose a systematic and methodical search for possible abnormal locations incorporating a thorough knowledge of the specific embryology. 相似文献

Cats injected with LSD (d-lysergic acid diethylamide) exhibit a group of behaviors that appear to be specific to hallucinogenic drugs. Two of these behaviors, limb flick and abortive grooming, have an extremely low frequency of occurrence in normal cats, but often dominate the behavior of LSD-treated cats. The frequency of occurrence of this group of behaviors is related to the dose of LSD. The behavioral changes are long-lasting following a single injection of LSD, and exhibit tolerance following the repeated administration of LSD. They are not elicited by a variety of control drugs, but are elicited by other indole nucleus hallucinogens. Because the behavioral effects are specific, reliable, easy to score, and quantifiable, they represent an animal model that can be used in studies of the effects of LSD and related hallucinogens. 相似文献

This research investigated the intakes of six intense sweeteners: acesulfame-K (E950), aspartame (E951), cyclamate (E952), saccharin (E954), sucralose (E955), and steviol glycosides (E960) in the diets of Irish adults, using data from the National Adult Nutrition Survey. A food label survey that included products currently available on the Irish market supplemented the analysis. Sweetener intakes were investigated using three different exposure scenarios; beginning with a crude assessment which assumed that all foods permitted to contain the additives of interest always did contain them, and at their maximum permitted level (Tier 1). Refined assessments estimated intakes of the six sweeteners using food consumption data up to brand level with additive occurrence data from a survey of products currently available on the Irish market (Tier 2) and sweetener concentration data (Tier 3). Results of all exposure assessment scenarios demonstrate that intakes of each of the sweeteners of interest by the total population were below the relevant ADI level (mg kg?1 bodyweight?1), even by high consumers (P99). The three sweeteners consumed in highest amounts were acesulfame-k, aspartame, and sucralose. The main sources of these sweeteners in the diet were ‘cider and perry’, ‘energy reduced and no added sugar (ER and NAS) carbonated flavoured drinks’, ‘table-top sweeteners’, ‘dairy products’, ‘solid food supplements’, and ‘sauces’. Intakes of the six intense sweeteners are currently not a concern among Irish adults. Nowadays, the use of pesticides is inevitable for pest control in crops, especially for fruit and vegetables. After the harvest from raw agricultural commodities, the amount of pesticide residues in food is mainly influenced by the storage, handling and processing that follow. If good agricultural and good manufacturing practices are enforced effectively, the amount of pesticide residues would be brought below the corresponding maximum residue level. Thus, the consumption of raw and/or prepared fruit and vegetables would be safe. Nonetheless, reports regarding pesticide residues in fruit or vegetables on mass media have been worrying consumers, who are concerned about the adverse effects of pesticide residues. As a result, consumers perform household processing before consumption to reduce any related risks. However, can these preparations effectively remove pesticide residues? Reviewing the extensive literature, it showed that, in most cases, washing and soaking can only lead to a certain degree of reduction in residue level, while other processing such as peeling, soaking in chemical baths and blanching can reduce pesticide residues more effectively. In general, the behaviour of residues during processing can be rationalised in terms of the physico‐chemical properties of the pesticide and the nature of the process. In contrast, the reported studies are diversified and some areas still lack sufficient studies to draw any remarks. Recommendations are provided with respect to the available information that aims to formulate an environmental friendly, cost‐effective and efficient household processing of fruit and vegetables to reduce pesticide residues. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

Priming and recollection are expressions of human memory mediated by different brain events. These brain events were monitored while people discriminated words from nonwords. Mean response latencies were shorter for words that appeared in an earlier study phase than for new words. This priming effect was reduced when the letters of words in study-phase presentations were presented individually in succession as opposed to together as complete words. Based on this outcome, visual word-form priming was linked to a brain potential recorded from the scalp over the occipital lobe about 450 ms after word onset. This potential differed from another potential previously associated with recollection, suggesting that distinct operations associated with these two types of memory can be monitored at the precise time that they occur in the human brain. 相似文献

The structure and biological activities of two disulphide isomersof a C-region deletion mutant of insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) which has an AsnGly link engineered at the junctionof the A- and B-regions were studied before and after chemicalcleavage. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra and binding affinityto IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP3) indicated that the treatmentwith hydroxylamine did not disrupt the overall tertiary foldof the hormones. Cleavage restored some binding affinity forthe IGF-I receptor in both isomers and weakly restored the abilityto stimulate incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA inNIH 3T3 fibroblasts transfected with the human IGF-I receptor.Cleavage also restored metabolic capacity, as measured by theability of the isomers to promote lipogenesis in isolated ratadipocytes through the insulin receptor. These results are consistentwith the theory that binding of IGF-I to the IGF-I receptorrequires a conformational change similar to that involved ininsulin binding the insulin receptor. The weak affinity forthe IGF-I receptor after cleavage is consistent with the beliefthat residues in the C-region interact with the IGF-I receptor.This structural difference between insulin and IGF-I gives eacha higher binding affinity for its own receptor. 相似文献

incidence flux to a focus. These devices, known as Lobster-eye optics for their similarity to the eyes of the macruran crustaceans,
show great promise as the focusing optic in the next generation of X-ray all-sky monitors. At X-ray wavelengths the optimal
Lobster-eye structure requires an aspect ratio of channel length to width of greater than 30:1. Following recent success in
fabricating a low aspect ratio Lobster-eye structure, we discuss some of the parameters for, and production issues involved
in making, a useful Lobster-eye prototype using LIGA. We report on our initial attempts to produce high aspect ratio Lobster-eye
optics using the LIGA process with a graphite substrate.
