To date, more than 1.3 million service members have served in the Global War on Terrorism. These men and women and their families face a range of stressful situations and must navigate many important tasks after a deployment. This article outlines four of the tasks of reintegration: redefining roles, expectations, and division of labor; managing strong emotions; abandoning emotional constriction and creating intimacy in relationships; and creating shared meaning. For each task, potential challenges are discussed and suggestions for how psychologists can support families are described. Comprehensive isochoric PVT measurements have been obtained for the system (0.99 CO2 + 0.01 C2H6). The range of state points studied includes those with densities from 2 to 24 mol·dm–3, temperatures from 245 to 400 K, and pressures to 35 MPa. Extensive comparisons have been made with two predictive conformai solution models, one which uses the 32-term BWR-type equation of Stewart and Jacobsen as a reference and the other using the newer Schmidt-Wagner functional form. BACKGROUND: An experiment was carried out to establish whether using a pre‐compacting device (expander) changes the contribution of dry matter (DM) and degradative behaviour of peas, lupins and faba beans over the different fractions (non‐washable fraction, NWF; insoluble washable fraction, ISWF; soluble washable fraction, SWF). Samples of the entire concentrate ingredients (WHO ingredients) and their different fractions (NWF, ISWF and SWF) were subjected to three processes (Retsch milling, R; expander treatment, E; expander‐pelleting, EP) and their fermentation characteristics were evaluated using an in vitro gas production technique. RESULTS: In peas and faba beans, both the E and EP processes increased the size of the NWF (P < 0.05) and decreased the size of the SWF compared with the R process. The maximum fractional rate of gas production in the first phase of fermentation was higher in the E and EP samples than in the R samples (P < 0.05). In lupins and faba beans the E and EP processes shifted the pattern of fermentation towards a more glucogenic fermentation, as represented by a lower non‐glucogenic to glucogenic ratio (NGR). Ammonia production (NH3‐N) in the E and EP samples was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that in the R samples. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the E and EP processes provide a certain level of protection against ruminal breakdown to dietary protein and shift the pattern of fermentation towards a more glucogenic fermentation. Assessed the magnitude of risk that adolescent cigarette smoking carries for adult smoking, using longitudinal data from 4,156 Ss surveyed originally during Grades 6–12 and followed up after completion of high school. Even infrequent experimentation (i.e., smoking only a few cigarettes) in adolescence significantly raised the risk for adult smoking by a factor of 16 compared to nonsmoking adolescents. Relative risk was also increased by early onset of smoking and by a stable, uninterrupted course from experimentation to regular smoking. Over the last few decades, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) have emerged as multifaceted players in not only the pathogenesis, but potential treatment, of numerous diseases. They activate diverse intracellular signaling cascades known to have extensive crosstalk, and have been best studied for their effects in cardiology and cancer biology. Recent work with the two factors indicates that the activity of one growth factor is often directly related to the action of the other. Their respective neuroprotective effects, in particular, raise important questions regarding the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease.  相似文献

There is wide interpatient variability in toxicity to chemotherapeutic drugs and a lack of routine clinical tests for prospectively identifying patients at risk of developing toxicity from chemotherapy. An empirically driven MS strategy has been developed to monitor liver-derived plasma proteins as potential biomarkers of early toxicity. Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) has been used to assess 46 candidate peptides from 18 liver-derived proteins. Following an iterative process of assay design, optimisation and assessment we selected 29 MRM assays (median CV 4.6%, range 1.2-11.6%) and monitored changes in levels of plasma proteins from a small number of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients undergoing chemotherapy. We demonstrated MRM assay robustness, and show that patients undergo minor elevation in plasma proteins when profiled on Day 3 of the chemotherapeutic regime. The MRM assays were in general agreement with 2-D DIGE-based quantitation from the same patient samples. The data supports the application of MRM-based methods as facile, highly reproducible, medium-throughput techniques that warrant expanded investigation for clinical utility in identifying patients at risk of developing chemotoxicity.  相似文献

Electrostatic fields of macromolecules (e.g., protein molecules) in solvents are often described by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This paper introduces two substantial amendments to the electrostatic model: first, the effective dielectric permittivity of the aqueous solvent layer on the molecular surface is drastically different from its bulk value of ~80 and, second, the recently developed flexible local approximation methods produce different schemes with much higher accuracy than the classical ones  相似文献

Increasing the thickness of a battery electrode without comprising cell electrochemical performance, such as power density and cycling stability, is very challenging. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of 3D (three dimensional) Cu foam framework as a current collector for building carbon negative electrodes as thick as 1.2 mm. When tested in a bipolar configuration, electrodes of 1.2 and 0.6 mm thick delivered capacities of over 350 mAh g−1 (>95% of theoretical capacity) up to a C/5 rate. We have also assembled a full cell composed of a 1.2 mm thick negative electrode with Cu foam as the current collector and a 1.2 mm thick L333 (LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2) positive electrode with Al foam as the current collector. The cell exhibited good capacity retention at low rates. These results underscore the promise of 3D foam structures in terms of enabling ultra-thick electrodes for high energy density battery applications.  相似文献
