One of the major concerns of IPTV network deployment is channel change delay (also known as zapping delay). This delay can add up to 2 s or more, and its main culprits are synchronisation and buffering of the media streams. Proving the importance of the problem is the already significant amount of literature addressing it. We start this paper with a survey of techniques proposed to reduce IPTV channel change delay.Then, by analysing an extensive dataset from an operational IPTV provider - comprising 255 thousand users, 150 TV channels, and covering a 6-month period - we have observed that most channel switching events are relatively predictable: users very frequently switch linearly, up or down to the next TV channel. This fact motivated us to use this dataset to analyse in detail a specific type of solutions to this problem, namely, predictive pre-joining of TV channels. In these schemes each set top box (STB) simultaneously joins additional multicast groups (TV channels) along with the one that is requested by the user. If the user switches to any of these channels the switching latency is virtually eliminated, not affecting therefore user's experience.We start by evaluating a simple scheme, where the neighbouring channels (i.e., channels adjacent to the requested one) are pre-joined by the STB during zapping periods. Notwithstanding the simplicity of this scheme, trace-driven simulations show that the zapping delay can be virtually eliminated for a significant percentage of channel switching requests. For example, when sending the previous and the next channel concurrently with the requested one, for only 1 min after a zapping event, switching delay is eliminated for close to half of all channel switching requests. Importantly, this result is achieved with a negligible increase of bandwidth utilisation in the access link. Other more complex schemes where user behaviour is tracked were also evaluated, but the improvement over the simple scheme was insignificant.  相似文献

This paper describes the crystallochemical mechanisms that underpin the migration of nano-size alumina, intermetallic growth and phase transformations in Au–Al wire bonds during annealing from 175 °C to 250 °C by utilizing high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Alumina, encapsulated within the Au–Al intermetallic compounds (IMCs), migrates towards the Au ball during annealing, with Au diffusion into the Al pad. The sequence of Au–Al IMC phase development during annealing was investigated. Initially, Au8Al3 appears as a third phase between the Au4Al and AuAl2 layers that form during bonding, and gradually becomes the dominant compound. Both AuAl2 and Au8Al3 are transformed into the Au-rich alloyAu4Al when Al is completely consumed, and this is the terminal product.  相似文献

A radiation detector technology based on plasma display panels (PDPs), the underlying engine of panel plasma television displays, is being investigated. Emerging from this well-established television technology is the Plasma Panel Sensor (PPS), a novel variant of the micro-pattern radiation detector. The PPS is fundamentally a fast, high-resolution detector comprised of an array of plasma discharge cells, operating in a hermetically sealed gas mixture. We report on the PPS development effort, including proof-of-principle results of laboratory signal observations.  相似文献

This practice paper reflects on the national design advice service in Scotland that has been operated by Architecture & Design Scotland (A&DS) since 2005. Placed in the context of research on design review practice, the paper describes how design review in Scotland has evolved from a traditional panel model operating alongside a range of training and skills development functions into a more holistic and dynamic design advice service. The paper argues that the evolution of design review in Scotland signifies an innovative shift away from the often combative setting of a design panel, where the force of an argument frequently wins the day, towards a more measured, iterative and collaborative process of nurturing and enabling well-designed buildings and places.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This is a study in the practice of postwar urban design in Toronto, Canada, based on archival documents and interviews with participants. The narrative begins with the hiring of one British-trained architect/urban designer, Raymond Spaxman, by the City of Toronto Planning Board in 1966. Spaxman then set up a new division of staff that he filled with five or six other architect/urban designers of various national and institutional origins. The study describes the work carried out by these urban designers, identifies the principle themes apparent in it, and relates this to published literature on the founding principles of postwar urban design. In most ways, the study's findings fit the current understanding of the early discipline – concern for pedestrians, sympathy for historical preservation – but in others not – it was different from but not antagonistic towards planning. The findings are then considered as an example of the international transfer of postwar planning ideas. The process of idea transfer in this case looks to have been more chaotic, and less definable, than existing paradigms suggest, but this might have been fairly common in second-rank, immigrant-receiving cities.  相似文献
