Nonuniform initiation of photoreactions II. Diffusion of reactive intermediates

The influence of spatially nonuniform initiation is investigated for a class of photoreactions in which diffusion of intermediates is important. The investigation is centered on a differential equation for reaction and diffusion of reactive intermediates. The circumstances are set forth under which the equation is valid for several kinetically similar reaction types. A solution is obtained for Lambert's law attenuation. The characteristics of this solution and the solution obtained by Noyes for linear attenuation are discussed. The practical consequences of these solutions are shown through illustrative calculations based on the photochlorination of tetrachloroethylene.     

Intracerebral implantation of the anti-estrogen CN-69, 725-27: Effects on female sexual behavior in rats

One of 3 patients with peiomyosarcomas of the epididymis and spermatic cord treated by inguinal orchietomy was cured, 1 died 18 months after diagnosis and 1 was living but had a pulmonary metastasis 4 years after excision of the primary tumor. All 3 patients with leiomyoma of the testicular adnexa were cured. The literature concerning smooth muscle tumors of the adnexa is reviewed.

Authorization is an important functionality that every hospital information system (HIS) should provide. An authorization mechanism permits information to be accessed only by properly authorized users. Authorization models and mechanisms have been widely investigated within the framework of HISs. However, their implementation into existing systems, that do not any longer meet increased authorization requirements, requires a major redesign effort. This paper describes a front end authorization mechanism that has been developed in an attempt to enhance the security features of an existing HIS without extensive modifications to the system structure.     

Epidemiological data and mortality rate of patients hospitalized with burns in Brazil

A study was performed on seven patients with Cushing's disease and seven age and sex matched patients with essential hypertension. The patients maintained their usual diet and sodium intake and received the ACE inhibitor trandolapril at a dose of 2 mg daily for 8 days. Trandolapril treatment resulted in an increase in the active renin and decrease in the urinary kallikrein activity in both study groups. Blood pressure decreased significantly in patients with Cushing's disease and essential hypertension after 8 days of trandolapril treatment. The opposite responses of renin and kallikrein to ACE inhibition support a possible feed-back mechanism of regulation between the renin-angiotensin system and the kallikrein-kinin system.
