A computer simulation model was used to evaluate a bowl versus inverted bowl assembly line arrangement for normal and exponential distributions and variances equal to 1 and 16. The model was developed on the basis of a realistic case problem and applied to a six-station assembly line. The results show that the inverted bowl is superior to the bowl arrangement for a normal distribution in terms of the total elapsed time evaluation criterion; however, with an exponential distribution, the bowl was found better than the inverted bowl for the same criterion. On the basis of the average percentage of working time and the average time in the system evaluation criteria, the bowl was found superior to the inverted bowl for a normal distribution. Similar results were obtained for an exponential distribution with a variance equal to 1, but no definitive inference could be made with a variance equal to 16. 相似文献

A framework for understanding verbal WM results is presented here. In this framework, domain-specific mechanisms for serial ordering in verbal WM are provided by the language production architecture, in which positional, lexical, and phonological similarity constraints are highly similar to those identified in the WM literature. These behavioral similarities are paralleled in computational modeling of serial ordering in both fields. The role of long-term learning in serial ordering performance is emphasized, in contrast to some models of verbal WM. Classic WM findings are discussed in terms of the language production architecture. In this paper, we critically examine previous research on rating formats and rater training in the context of performance appraisal. Historically, the goal of this body of research has been to search for ways of maximizing the psychometric quality of performance evaluation data. Our central thesis is that there are a number of avenues for broadening this research. Accordingly, we propose a conceptual model that hopefully serves as a conceptual framework for future work in these 2 traditional performance appraisal research streams. For example, both rating formats and rater training research may be useful for facilitating and improving the feedback and employee development process, as well as reducing the potential existence of rater biases. In addition, format and training research may focus upon ways of enhancing both rater and ratee reactions to the appraisal system. A key feature of our model is the integration of national culture as a moderator of the relations between specific formats, training programs, and various outcomes. We consider both the national culture of raters and ratees, and focus specifically on comparisons between Western and East Asian cultures. This paper presents a new method of knowledge gathering for decision support in image understanding based on information extracted from the dynamics of saccadic eye movements. The framework involves the construction of a generic image feature extraction library, from which the feature extractors that are most relevant to the visual assessment by domain experts are determined automatically through factor analysis. The dynamics of the visual search are analyzed by using the Markov model for providing training information to novices on how and where to look for image features. The validity of the framework has been evaluated in a clinical scenario whereby the pulmonary vascular distribution on Computed Tomography images was assessed by experienced radiologists as a potential indicator of heart failure. The performance of the system has been demonstrated by training four novices to follow the visual assessment behavior of two experienced observers. In all cases, the accuracy of the students improved from near random decision making (33%) to accuracies ranging from 50% to 68%. 相似文献

The design and operation of a proof-of-principle rectangular He-Ne ring laser resonator with a cavity perimeter of 77.0 m and an area of approximately 367 m2 are described. With unevacuated beam lines this device gave an Earth-induced Sagnac frequency of 1513 Hz, with a relative Allan deviation over 1000 s down to 3 parts per million. The Earth's rotation provided a bias that eliminated the lock-in susceptibility. Ergonomists need easy-to-use, quantitative job evaluation methods to assess risk factors for upper extremity work-related musculoskeletal disorders in field-based epidemiology studies. One device that may provide an objective measure of exposure to arm acceleration is a wrist-worn accelerometer or activity monitor. A field trial was conducted to evaluate the performance of a single-axis accelerometer using an industrial population (n=158) known to have diverse upper limb motion characteristics. The second phase of the field trial involved an examination of the relationship between more traditional observation-based ergonomic exposure measures and the monitor output among a group of assembly-line production employees (n=48) performing work tasks with highly stereotypic upper limb motion patterns. As expected, the linear acceleration data obtained from the activity monitor showed statistically significant differences between three occupational groups known observationally to have different upper limb motion requirements. Among the assembly-line production employees who performed different short-cycle assembly work tasks, statistically significant differences were also observed. Several observation-based ergonomic exposure measures were found to explain differences in the acceleration measure among the production employees who performed different jobs: hand and arm motion speed, use of the hand as a hammer, and, negatively, resisting forearm rotation from the torque of a power tool. The activity monitors were found to be easy to use and non-intrusive, and to be able to distinguish arm acceleration among groups with diverse upper limb motion characteristics as well as between different assembly job tasks where arm monitors were performed repeatedly at a fixed rate. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Occupational scientists agree there are hazards associated with dry-cleaning, but do dry-cleaning owners and workers concur? Knowledge of owners' and workers' perceptions can help guide intervention efforts to reduce worker exposure. To better understand these issues, a qualitative study was conducted using focus group methodology and constant comparative analysis. METHODS: Two owner and four worker focus groups were held. RESULTS: Findings suggest that overall, health and safety issues were not of great concern. Owners were primarily concerned with the economic impact of regulations. Workers did express some anxiety about solvent exposure and burns, but most felt that these hazards were "just part of the job." Also, other than the installation of air-conditioning in the shops and the provision of health benefits, workers could not think of ways health and safety on the job could be improved. CONCLUSIONS: These findings will be used to develop comprehensive safety and health interventions (e.g., engineering plus education and training) in dry-cleaning shops. 相似文献

We have examined the effects of the macrocyclic lactone protein kinase C (PKC) activator bryostatin 1 on taxol-induced apoptosis and inhibition of clonogenicity in the human monocytic leukemia cell line U937. Exposure of cells to bryostatin 1 (10 nM; 15 hr) after (but not before) a 6-hr incubation with 0.5 microM taxol significantly increased apoptosis and resulted in an approximately 3 log reduction in clonogenicity. Cell cycle analysis revealed that the increase in apoptotic cells following bryostatin 1 treatment occurred primarily in the population undergoing taxol-mediated G2M arrest. The actions of bryostatin 1 were not attributable to potentiation of taxol-induced tubulin stabilization or to a reduction in the intracellular retention of taxol. Following exposure of cells to taxol, the Bcl-2 protein displayed an alteration in mobility that was not modified appreciably by bryostatin 1 treatment. The mobility shift in Bcl-2 protein from cells exposed to taxol followed by bryostatin 1 was eliminated by treatment of lysates with the protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A); the latter effect was blocked by okadaic acid. Treatment of cells with taxol followed by bryostatin 1 did not increase the amount of total Bax (compared with treatment with taxol alone), but did increase the amount of free Bax in the supernatant fraction. Finally, the ability of bryostatin 1 to potentiate taxol-induced apoptosis in U937 cells was mimicked closely by 2'-amino-3'-methoxyflavone (PD98059), a specific inhibitor of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinase (MEK). Collectively, these findings indicate that bryostatin 1 increases the susceptibility of U937 cells to taxol-induced apoptosis and inhibition of clonogenicity. They also raise the possibility that this phenomenon may involve functional alterations in Bcl-2 and/or other proteins involved in regulation of the cell death pathway. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: After fluid percussion brain injury (FPI) in the newborn pig, pial arteries constrict and responses to dilator stimuli, including opioids, are blunted. This study was designed to determine if altered release of prostaglandins contributes to blunted opioid dilation of cerebral arteries in newborn piglets following brain injury. DESIGN: Prospective, in vivo, cerebral hemodynamic animal study. SETTING: University research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Newborn (1- to 5-days old) piglets of either gender. INTERVENTIONS: In anesthetized, newborn, 1- to 5-day-old pigs, a closed cranial window was used to measure pial artery diameter and to collect cortical periarachnoid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for determination of 6-keto-PGF1alpha, the stable metabolite of prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2), the stable metabolite of TXA2, via radioimmunoassay. FPI of moderate severity (1.9 to 2.3 atmospheres) was produced by using a pendulum to strike a piston on a saline-filled cylinder that was fluid coupled to the brain via a hollow screw inserted through the cranium. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Methionine enkephalin (Met) vasodilation was blunted after FPI but was partially restored with indomethacin pretreatment (5 mg/kg i.v.) (8 +/- 1 [SEM] %, 13 +/- 1%, and 20 +/- 1% vs. 1 +/- 1%, 3 +/- 1%, and 5 +/- 1% vs. 7 +/- 1%, 10 +/- 1%, and 15 +/- 1%, respectively, for 10(-10), 10(-8), and 10(-6) M Met during control conditions, after FPI, and after FPI pretreated with indomethacin, n = 6). Similarly, restoration of Met dilation after FPI was observed with SQ 29,548, a TXA2 antagonist. Met-induced 6-keto-PGF1alpha release was blunted following FPI (889 +/- 20, 1130 +/- 33, and 1886 +/- 59 vs. 2630 +/- 36, 2775 +/- 30, and 2825 +/- 36 pg/mL for control, 10(-10), and 10(-6) M Met before and after FPI, respectively, n = 6). In contrast, Met-induced TXB2 release was enhanced after FPI (340 +/- 20, 423 +/- 25, and 473 +/- 30 pg/mL vs. 518 +/- 30, 726 +/- 90, and 901 +/- 35 pg/mL for control, 10(-10), and 10(-6) M Met before and after FPI, respectively, n = 6). Leucine enkephalin- and dynorphin-induced dilation and associated prostaglandin release were similarly altered following FPI. Beta endorphin-induced constriction was enhanced following FPI, and these potentiated responses were blunted after indomethacin or SQ 29,548 pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that FPI increases CSF 6-keto-PGF1alpha and TXB2 concentrations. These data suggest that altered release of prostaglandins by opioids contribute to impaired cerebral hemodynamics following FPI in piglets. 相似文献
