Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy produced a 1 km resolution global land cover characteristics database for use in a wide range of continental-to global-scale environmental studies. This database provides a unique view of the broad patterns of the biogeographical and ecoclimatic diversity of the global land surface, and presents a detailed interpretation of the extent of human development. The project was carried out as an International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, Data and Information Systems (IGBP-DIS) initiative. The IGBP DISCover global land cover product is an integral component of the global land cover database. DISCover includes 17 general land cover classes defined to meet the needs of IGBP core science projects. A formal accuracy assessment of the DISCover data layer will be completed in 1998. The 1 km global land cover database was developed through a continent-by-continent unsupervised classification of 1 km monthly Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) composites covering 1992-1993. Extensive post-classification stratification was necessary to resolve spectral/temporal confusion between disparate land cover types. The complete global database consists of 961 seasonal land cover regions that capture patterns of land cover, seasonality and relative primary productivity. The seasonal land cover regions were aggregated to produce seven separate land cover data sets used for global environmental modelling and assessment. The data sets include IGBP DISCover, U.S. Geological Survey Anderson System, Simple Biosphere Model, Simple Biosphere Model 2, Biosphere-Atmosphere Transfer Scheme, Olson Ecosystems and Running Global Remote Sensing Land Cover. An AlGaAs/GaAs nan heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) laser driver circuit and a pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs graded index single-quantum-well (SQW) laser have been laterally integrated to maintain surface planarity using selective organometallic vapor-phase epitaxy (OMVPE) regrowth of the HBT. The self-aligned HBTs exhibit a DC current gain of 30 and an ft (fmax ) of 45(60) GHz. The 980-nm lasers exhibit room-temperature threshold current densities as low as 420(320) A/cm2 for CW (pulsed) operation. The cavities are 40(7) μm×500 μm and have less than 1(2) Ω of series resistance. SPICE simulations of the integrated driver indicate that operating speeds of over 10 Gb/s are possible  相似文献

Although recent years have seen significant advances in the spatial resolution possible in the transmission electron microscope (TEM), the temporal resolution of most microscopes is limited to video rate at best. This lack of temporal resolution means that our understanding of dynamic processes in materials is extremely limited. High temporal resolution in the TEM can be achieved, however, by replacing the normal thermionic or field emission source with a photoemission source. In this case the temporal resolution is limited only by the ability to create a short pulse of photoexcited electrons in the source, and this can be as short as a few femtoseconds. The operation of the photo-emission source and the control of the subsequent pulse of electrons (containing as many as 5 x 10(7) electrons) create significant challenges for a standard microscope column that is designed to operate with a single electron in the column at any one time. In this paper, the generation and control of electron pulses in the TEM to obtain a temporal resolution <10(-6)s will be described and the effect of the pulse duration and current density on the spatial resolution of the instrument will be examined. The potential of these levels of temporal and spatial resolution for the study of dynamic materials processes will also be discussed.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, a group of listeners with substantial hearing loss due to presbyacusis and a group of listeners with normal hearing were given three localization tests: a frontal plane test in which they judged whether sounds came from the left, overhead, or the right; a sagittal plane test in which they judged whether sounds came from directly in front, overhead, or behind; and an elevation test in which they judged the vertical position of sounds coming from in front. The two groups performed similarly on the frontal plane test, which chiefly depended upon their ability to use binaural localization cues. They performed differently on the sagittal plane and elevation tests, for which the predominant localization cues were spectral. The listeners with presbyacusis were substantially less accurate than those with normal hearing in both of these instances. They had particular difficulty judging source elevation, rarely scoring much above chance. Follow-up testing of a group of subjects in the early stages of presbyacusis showed localization performance that was intermediate to the other two groups, but far more like that of the normal-hearing listeners. In Experiment 2, additional tests were run with the following conditions designed to encourage improved performance by listeners with presbyacusic hearing loss: (1) filtering of stimuli to preclude masking of more informative high-frequency components by low frequencies; (2) simplification of the elevation test and greater spatial separation of its loudspeaker sources; and (3) use of hearing aids. Conditions 1 and 2 had no appreciable effect on performance; condition 3 significantly improved presbyacusic listeners' ability to localize in the sagittal plane, particularly when sounds came from the front.  相似文献

The current study evaluated exosomes isolated from plasma of heifers bred to have high or low fertility through developing extreme diversity in fertility breeding values, however, key animal traits (e.g., body weight, milk production, and percentage of North American genetics) remained similar between the 2 groups. The exosomes were isolated by a combined ultracentrifugation and size exclusion chromatography approach and characterized by their size distribution (nanoparticle tracking analysis), morphology (transmission electron microscopy), and presence of exosomal markers (immunoblotting). In addition, a targeted mass spectrometry approach was used to confirm the presence of 2 exosomal markers, tumor susceptibility gene 101 and flotillin 1. The number of exosomes from plasma of high fertility heifers was greater compared with low fertility heifers. Interestingly, the exosomal proteomic profile, evaluated using mass spectrometry, identified 89 and 116 proteins in the high and low fertility heifers respectively, of which 4 and 31 were unique, respectively. These include proteins associated with specific biological processes and molecular functions of fertility. Most notably, the tetratricopeptide repeat protein 41-related, glycodelin, and kelch-like protein 8 were identified in plasma exosomes unique to the low fertility heifers. These proteins are suggested to play a role in reproduction; however, the role of these proteins in dairy cow reproduction remains to be elucidated. Their identification underscores the potential for proteins within exosomes to provide information on the fertility status and physiological condition of the cow. This may potentially lead to the development of prognostic tools and interventions to improving dairy cow fertility.  相似文献

Fuel cells aboard hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are often hybridized with an energy storage system (ESS). Batteries and ultracapacitors are the most common technologies used in ESSs aboard HEVs. High-speed flywheels are an emerging technology with traits that have the potential to make them competitive with more established battery and ultracapacitor technologies in certain vehicular applications. This study compares high-speed flywheels, ultracapacitors, and batteries functioning as the ESS in a fuel cell based HEV on the bases of cost and fuel economy. In this study, computer models were built to simulate the powertrain of a fuel cell based HEV where high-speed flywheels, batteries, and ultracapacitors of a range of sizes were used as the ESS. A simulated vehicle with a powertrain using each of these technologies was run over two different drive cycles in order to see how the different ESSs performed under different driving patterns. The results showed that when cost and fuel economy were both considered, high-speed flywheels were competitive with batteries and ultracapacitors.  相似文献

Methylmalonic aciduria is a rare metabolic disorder of amino acid metabolism that is characterized by accumulation of large amounts of methylmalonic acid in the blood and urine. To our knowledge this is the first case report of a patient with methylmalonic aciduria who carried a pregnancy to term; the outcome was favorable despite high levels of methylmalonic acid in the serum and urine.  相似文献

To study the application of electroencephalography (EEG) for the assessment of insensibility during stunning and slaughter, recordings were made on sheep that were slaughtered by throat cutting, electrically stunned head-only and allowed to recover, electrically stunned head-only followed by throat cutting or electrically stunned head-to-back. The same experiments were repeated on calves (1–6 weeks old) except some calves were stunned and allowed to recover before final stunning and throat cutting.

After the throat cut, sheep became insensible (i.e. EEG < 10 μV) at 8–22 s but the calf EEG did not fall below 10 μV until 79 s after the cut. With head-only stunning/recovery, high-amplitude EEG waves (electroplectic fit) continued for 47 s (sheep) and 33 s (calves) post stun. A quiescent period followed, which then developed into a period of moderate-amplitude EEG signals, so that, at 50 s post stun, the EEG usually exceeded 50 μV and often had bursts of 150 μV activity. After head-only stunning/throat cutting, the electroplectic fit was shortened (39 s in sheep, 23 s in calves) and the EEG took at least 50 s to fall below 10 μV. With sheep stunned head-to-back, which stops the heart, and thus should cause immediate, permanent insensibility, the EEG took longer to fall below 10 μV (52 s) than after throat cutting. These results suggest that electrical stunning of sheep and calves causes a prolonged increase in the post-stun EEG amplitude. Therefore, during slaughter, stunned animals have larger amplitude EEG signals than unstunned animals, and EEG criteria developed for judging the sensibility of unstunned animals cannot be used for those that are electrically stunned.  相似文献

Heritability estimates, by year of freshening of daughter, were obtained from daughter-dam and granddaughter-granddam regressions using 61,482 triply matched first lactations of artificially sired Holstein cows obtained from the Northeast Dairy Records Processing Laboratory. After adjusting for herd-year-season effects, residual effects may include additive and other genetic effects of the animal, maternal effects, cytoplasmic effects, and other environmental effects. Analysis of residuals showed that cytoplasmic effects accounted for no variation in milk and fat yield and fat percent. Weighted yearly heritability estimates and standard errors from daughter on dam regressions were .35 +/- .01 for milk yield, .30 +/- .01 for milk fat yield, and .63 +/- .01 for milk fat percent and from daughter on granddam regressions were .34 +/- .03 for milk production, .28 +/- .03 for milk fat production, and .55 +/- .03 for milk fat percent. The differences between daughter-dam and daughter-granddam heritability estimates, which estimate twice the fraction of variance due to cytoplasmic effects, were negative and not statistically significant for milk fat yield and also were negative but highly significant for milk fat percent.  相似文献
