OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of immune system function in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). DESIGN: Survey on blood samples obtained from RSD patients and from a randomly selected control group. The lymphocyte populations (T, B, NK cells), and the activated T cells (CD25, and HLA-Dr-positive CD4 and CD8 cells) were analyzed by flow cytometry with dual-color direct immunofluorescence after whole-blood lysis. Clinical chemistry parameters were analyzed in additional serum samples. SETTING: Tertiary care center (outpatient rehabilitation clinic). SUBJECTS: Thirteen patients (nine women) with RSD and a control group of 21 healthy individuals. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The results of the flow cytometry analysis of RSD patients were related to those of the control subjects. Means were analyzed, and confidence intervals for differences of the means were calculated. The means of the clinical chemical analysis were related to local reference values. RESULTS: The flow cytometry analysis did not differ between RSD patients and healthy controls. Although in some patients an individual parameter of clinical chemical analysis differed from its reference value, all of the mean values were within reference limits. Stratification on medications with immunomodulatory effects and on probability of a definite diagnosis of RSD had no influence on the results. CONCLUSION: No association between immunologic indices and RSD was found. This finding is relevant, because recent theories stress that it is not the sympathetic nervous system but a local inflammatory reaction that is fundamental in the pathogenesis of RSD. Since Samuel's work on checkers over thirty years ago, much effort has been devoted to learning evaluation functions. However, all such methods are sensitive to the feature set chosen to represent the examples. If the features do not capture aspects of the examples significant for problem solving, the learned evaluation function may be inaccurate or inconsistent. Typically, good feature sets are carefully handcrafted and a great deal of time and effort goes into refining and tuning them. This paper presents an automatic knowledge-based method for generating features for evaluation functions. The feature set is developed iteratively: features are generated, then evaluated, and this information is used to develop new features in turn. Both the contribution of a feature and its computational expense are considered in determining whether and how to develop it further.
This method has been applied to two problem-solving domains: the Othello board game and the domain of telecommunications network management. Empirical results show that the method is able to generate many known features and several novel features and to improve concept accuracy in both domains.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the career choices and developments made by leading senior surgeons in this country and to examine hypothetically whether application of a short tracking program would have hindered their career decisions. DESIGN: A survey pertaining to each surgeon's career, decisions, and opinions concerning surgical training. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Senior surgeons of regional and national surgical societies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Survey responses. RESULTS: A total of 352 surveys (41.4%) were received. Respondents answered that the most common reasons for choosing a specialty were role models or mentors (56%), research (51%), and available patient population (23%). The 2 most common stages in a career at which the respondents became interested in a specialty, or an area of expertise, were at the junior residency level (when the specialty was chosen) and at the assistant professor level (when a more specific topic within the specialty was chosen). The most common stage at which the group believed they acquired their expertise was also at the assistant professor level. Seventy-one percent of respondents believed broad training was superior to a short tracking system, although none had participated in shortened surgical training. CONCLUSIONS: Most leading senior surgeons in this country still believe that broad surgical training is superior and should be maintained. Because career specialties in this surveyed group were generally chosen in early residency, a hypothetical application of the short tracking system would have still allowed for these important decisions to be made. Also, it seems likely that specialty and career development would not have been hindered because "expertization" mostly occurred after training was completed. Regardless of training method, a role model or mentor seems most important in career choices and developments.  相似文献

A solid-state 2H NMR study of methyl-d3-cobalamin has been performed as a function of temperature to provide information concerning the character and energetics of the motion performed by this unique bioorganometallic methyl group. Analysis of the 2H NMR line shape indicates that the methyl group undergoes rapid three-fold rotation, and that the Co-C-2H angle lies between 105.9 and 109.5 degrees. Determination of the spin-lattice relaxation times T1 shows that the relaxation is anisotropic, consistent with a "jumping" motion of the methyl group rather than rotational diffusion. This also provides the activation energy to methyl jumps as 8.3 +/- 1.3 kJ/mol. It is proposed that this energetic barrier may be a useful probe of changes in the electronic character of the Co-C bond that accompany the biological role of this molecule in such enzymes as methionine synthase.  相似文献

Robust Classification for Imprecise Environments   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
In real-world environments it usually is difficult to specify target operating conditions precisely, for example, target misclassification costs. This uncertainty makes building robust classification systems problematic. We show that it is possible to build a hybrid classifier that will perform at least as well as the best available classifier for any target conditions. In some cases, the performance of the hybrid actually can surpass that of the best known classifier. This robust performance extends across a wide variety of comparison frameworks, including the optimization of metrics such as accuracy, expected cost, lift, precision, recall, and workforce utilization. The hybrid also is efficient to build, to store, and to update. The hybrid is based on a method for the comparison of classifier performance that is robust to imprecise class distributions and misclassification costs. The ROC convex hull (ROCCH) method combines techniques from ROC analysis, decision analysis and computational geometry, and adapts them to the particulars of analyzing learned classifiers. The method is efficient and incremental, minimizes the management of classifier performance data, and allows for clear visual comparisons and sensitivity analyses. Finally, we point to empirical evidence that a robust hybrid classifier indeed is needed for many real-world problems.  相似文献

The paper describes various analytical and numerical models which have been used to predict the quantities of water flowing into underground mines. Analytical models of flow into wells are discussed briefly and their limitations when applied to mine water flow are listed. Numerical models designed specifically for underground mines are examined in detail under the three categories of water resource models, mine water models and methane and water models. The extent to which the available numerical models are applicable to British longwall coal mining operations is considered and the need for further work is identified.  相似文献
