Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, especially lightweight sandwich structures, are rapidly finding their way into civil infrastructure application. FRP composite panels are particularly attractive as bridge deck systems due to their high strength, low density, and durability, which are of importance to the bridge industry. Most of the vast amount of durability data for FRP has been generated for aerospace and automotive applications, which involve very different service conditions than civil infrastructure. For civil engineering applications, it is essential to examine the durability performance of FRP materials under weathering conditions. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a reliable framework for durability assessment of FRP decks, including laboratory testing procedure and finite-element simulation capability. Such a framework should be applicable to all types of FRP deck construction. In this paper, specimens of typical FRP bridge deck skin materials are subjected to freeze-thaw cycling between 4.4 and ?17.8°C in media of dry air, distilled water, and saltwater, and constant freeze at ?17.8°C . The selected deck is used as an example for demonstration purposes. In addition, selected specimens are subjected to simultaneous environmental exposure conditions and sustained loading of 25% ultimate strain. It should be emphasized that most of the environmental conditions reported in the literature produce minor deterioration of a single composite property, and the assessment of such effect on this single property becomes unreliable because of a large property variation. Therefore, in this paper we use multiple mechanical properties as performance indices for damage evaluation. Based on findings from this work, it is concluded that freeze-thaw cycling between 4.4 and ?17.8°C alone and up to 1,250 h and 625 cycles caused very insignificant or no change in the flexural strength, storage modulus, and loss factor of the FRP specimens conditioned in dry air, distilled water, and saltwater. Small reductions in storage modulus (about 1% or less) were observed when specimens were prestrained and subjected to 250 freeze-thaw cycles in distilled water and saltwater. SNR scalable speech coding is desirable for a number of network multimedia applications, but relatively few SNR-scalable speech coders exist for operation at rates below 16 kb/s. We investigate several SNR scalable source coding structures and define the new concepts of dependent and independent SNR scalability, where independent SNR scalable coders depend on the core layer coder only through the core layer output. Independent SNR scalable structures offer the possibility of providing bit rate scalable functionality to existing nonscalable coders and standards. We show that the MPEG-4 scalable coders are examples of dependent SNR scalable coders, and we introduce a new independent SNR scalable coder called CELPTree, which has the additional advantage of being low delay. We compare the performance of the MPEG-4 coders and CELPTree for both clean and noisy speech, and we examine the effects of frequency-weighted distortion measures in the enhancement layers of SNR scalable speech coders. 相似文献

The Young’s moduli, the elastic buckling strength and the plastic collapse strength of regular honeycombs with defects consisting of missing cells in the structure were analyzed using the finite element method. The behavior of intact honeycombs was first analyzed; the results of this numerical study are consistent with those of previous analyses. The effect of single, isolated defects of varying sizes and the effect of the separation distance between two defects on the elastic and plastic behaviors were then analyzed. Single, isolated defects reduce the modulus and strength. The elastic buckling strength of a honeycomb with a defect normalized by the intact strength decreases directly with the ratio of the minimum net cross-sectional area normalized by the intact cross-sectional area. The plastic collapse strength of a honeycomb with a defect normalized by the intact strength decreases less rapidly than the ratio of the minimum net cross-sectional area normalized by the intact cross-sectional area. Two closely spaced, separate defects interact to reduce the elastic buckling strength of a honeycomb; at a separation distance of about ten cells separate defects act independently. The separation distance between two defects has little effect on the Young’s modulus or the plastic collapse strength of a honeycomb. We have developed a compact dispersion-free TG (transient-grating) FROG (frequency-resolved optical gating) by utilizing a mask that separates the input beam into three distinct beams focused into fused silica to create the FROG signal. Two of the beams are reflected off the same set of mirrors to ensure identical optical paths, eliminating the difficulty in establishing zero time delay between the beams. In addition, the use of only reflective optics avoids material dispersion in the FROG except for the mixing crystal. This TG FROG is capable of operating with an intensity of 1 x 10(11) W/cm(2) and has resolutions less than 0.5 and 1.3 fs for 25- and 10-fs input pulses, respectively. 相似文献

Ligation of the TCR or CD28 induces activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), the TEC family protein tyrosine kinase, EMT/ITK/TSK (EMT), and the SRC family tyrosine kinase, LCK. LCK is required for the activation and phosphorylation of EMT induced by ligation of the TCR or CD28 placing LCK upstream of EMT in T cell signaling cascades. We report herein that inhibition of PI3K activity with the specific inhibitors LY294002 and wortmannin markedly decreased EMT activation induced by CD28 cross-linking but not by CD3 cross-linking. Further, inhibition of PI3K markedly decreased EMT in vitro autokinase activity induced by activated LCK. In contrast, PI3K inhibitors did not alter CD28 or CD3 cross-linking or LCK-induced EMT phosphorylation. Consistent with the requirement of PI3K activity for CD28 but not CD3-induced stimulation of the EMT in vitro autokinase activity, a small but significant portion of cellular EMT associates with PI3K following CD28 cross-linking but not following CD3 cross-linking. CD28-induced association of EMT with PI3K also requires functional expression of LCK. Fusion proteins containing the SRC homology 2 domain of EMT interact with PI3K or a PI3K-associated molecule in a tyrosine phosphorylation-dependent manner. Taken together, the data suggest that EMT is differentially regulated and recruited to different signaling complexes following ligation of CD28 or the TCR complex, perhaps contributing to the disparate roles that EMT appears to play downstream of CD28 and the TCR. 相似文献

Public awareness and misunderstandings of lactose intolerance are at an all-time high. Many people erroneously believe they are lactose intolerant or develop gastrointestinal symptoms after intake of lactose. Consequently, lactose-containing foods such as milk and other dairy foods may be eliminated unnecessarily from the diet. Because these foods are a major source of calcium, low intake of them can compromise calcium nutriture. This, in turn, can increase the risk of major chronic diseases such as osteoporosis (porous bones) and hypertension. This review is intended to help dietetics professionals alleviate clients' fears about lactose intolerance and recommend dietary strategies to improve tolerance to lactose. Scientific findings indicate that the prevalence of lactose intolerance is grossly overestimated. Other physiologic and psychologic factors can contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic lactose intolerance. Scientific findings also indicate that people with laboratory-confirmed low levels of the enzyme lactase can consume 1 serving of milk with a meal or 2 servings of milk per day in divided doses at breakfast and dinner without experiencing symptoms. Marshall syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia that is phenotypically similar to the more common disorder Stickler syndrome. For a large kindred with Marshall syndrome, we demonstrate a splice-donor-site mutation in the COL11A1 gene that cosegregates with the phenotype. The G+1-->A transition causes in-frame skipping of a 54-bp exon and deletes amino acids 726-743 from the major triple-helical domain of the alpha1(XI) collagen polypeptide. The data support the hypothesis that the alpha1(XI) collagen polypeptide has an important role in skeletal morphogenesis that extends beyond its contribution to structural integrity of the cartilage extracellular matrix. Our results also demonstrate allelism of Marshall syndrome with the subset of Stickler syndrome families associated with COL11A1 mutations. 相似文献
