The reliability and frequency specificity of the 80-Hz amplitude-modulation-following response (80-Hz AMFR) during sleep detected by phase coherence as a measure of the hearing threshold was evaluated in 169 affected ears of 125 children with hearing impairment. The 80-Hz AMFR at a carrier frequency of 1000 Hz was monitored in all 169 ears and the auditory brainstem response (ABR) elicited by 1000-Hz tone pips was evaluated in 93 ears. Both responses were examined during sleep, and the thresholds were compared with the behavioral hearing threshold, which was determined by standard pure-tone audiometry or play audiometry. In 24 ears of 22 children with various patterns of audiogram, the 80-Hz AMFR was examined at different carrier frequencies, and the threshold pattern was compared with the pure-tone audiogram to investigate the frequency specificity of 80-Hz AMFR. The mean and standard deviation of the difference between the 80-Hz AMFR at a carrier frequency of 1000 Hz and pure-tone thresholds of 1000 Hz was 3.8 and 12.9 dB, and that between the ABR and pure-tone thresholds was 6.8 and 14.1 dB, respectively. The threshold patterns of 80-Hz AMFR clearly followed the corresponding audiogram patterns in all types of hearing impairment. The measurement of 80-Hz AMFR thus appears to be accurate in hearing assessment and to have good frequency specificity in children during sleep.  相似文献

1. The direction of torsion produced during active shortening of helical strips of sheep carotid arteries was measured to assess whether inner or outer muscle was contracting. 2. Noradrenaline contracted inner (non-innervated) muscle in lower concentrations than were needed to contract outer (innervated) muscle, even with desipramine present to prevent uptake of noradrenaline by the nerves and with enough cyanide present to rise the normally low O2 tension of inner muscle to that of outer muscle. 3. Activation of sympathetic nerves in the outer part of the artery by nicotine caused almost evenly balanced contraction of both parts of the wall, with slight bias to outer contraction. 4. Moderate external constriction of the artery in vivo for 10-17 days, in order to raise pressure throughout the wall to intraluminal pressure, made the entire wall nerve-free. 5. The results provide evidence that the nerves can induce substantial activation of inner muscle, which is highly sensitive to noradrenaline, and that the absence of nerves from inner muscle can be explained by the high pressure there.  相似文献

1. The sensory neurons in the leech central nervous system differ in their accommodation to linearly rising currents. Advantage was taken of these differences to study the ionic mechanism of accommodation in single pairs of N (noxious), P (pressure), and T (touch) cells. 2. Nonlinearities in membrane-potential changes and current-voltage relationships with square-wave and ramp currents are more pronounced in P and T cells than in N cells. The accommodation coefficients increase in conditions that reflect this delayed rectification. When rectification is absent, the accommodation coefficients depart from unity only slightly or not at all. 3. Accommodation coefficients remain unchanged when half of the chloride in the bathing medium is replaced by sulfate. Accommodation coefficients become greater when the extracellular potassium concentration is reduced from 4 to 0 mM, and decrease when the concentration is raised to 8 mM. The membrane potential changes by only a few millivolts. 4. As extracellular potassium concentration is increased, the action potential is lengthened and the maximal rate of fall of the action potential is reduced. With concentrations greater than 4 mM these relationships are linear, but depart from linearity at lower concentrations. The amplitude of the undershoot decreases linearly as the extracellular potassium concentration increases from 4 to 16 mM, and increases non-linearly at concentrations below 4 mM. 5. The rapid accommodation of leech neurons is based primarily on an increased potassium conductance. The possibility is considered that concentration changes like those produced experimentally may occur naturally, affecting integrative processes in the central nervous system.  相似文献

The slope of curves relating the log increment threshold to log background luminance in cat retinal ganglion cells is affected by the area and duration of the test stimulus, as it is in human pyschophysical experiments. 2. Using large area, long duration stimuli the slopes average 0-82 and approach close to 1 (Weber's Law) in the steepest cases. Small stimuli gave an average of 0-53 for on-centre units using brief stimuli, and 0-56 for off-centre units, using long stimuli. Slopes under 0-5 (square root law) were not found over an extended range of luminances. 3. On individual units the slope was generally greater for larger and longer test stimulus, but no unit showed the full extent of change from slope of 0-5 to slope of 1. 4. The above differences hold for objective measures of quantum/spike ratio, as well as for thresholds either judged by ear or assessed by calculation. 5. The steeper slope of the curves for large area, long duration test stimuli compared with small, long duration stimuli, is associated with the increased effectiveness of antagonism from the surround at high backgrounds. This change may be less pronounced in off-centre units, one of which (probably transient Y-type) showed no difference of slope, and gave parallel area-threshold curves at widely separated background luminances, confirming the importance of differential surround effectiveness in changing the slope of the curves. 6. In on-centre units, the increased relative effectiveness of the surround is associated with the part of the raised background light that falls on the receptive field centre. 7. It is suggested that the variable surround functions as a zero-offset control that sets the threshold excitation required for generating impulses, and that this is separate from gain-setting adaptive mechanisms. This may be how ganglion cells maintain high incremental sensitivity in spite of a strong maintained excitatory drive that would otherwise cause compressive response non-linearities.  相似文献

An analogue of the 10 C-terminal amino acids of neuropeptide Y (NPY) containing three D-isomeric substitutions (27-36-D) has been synthesized and its cardiovascular activity studied in Sprague-Dawley (SD) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats. Intravenous administration of 1000 nmol/kg 27-36-D decreases MAP in SHR (-59.9 +/- 5.0 mmHg) and SD rats (-44.4 +/- 4.7 mmHg). The hypotension produced by 1000 nmol/kg 27-36-D diminished by 71.2% following pretreatment with the histamine receptor antagonist diphenhydramine, although histamine depletion with compound 48/80 does not significantly alter this hypotension. These data suggest that NPY (27-36)-D produces a profound and sustained hypotension in two strains of rat which is partially attributable to activity at histamine receptors.  相似文献
