Interpersonal intimacy is more difficult to achieve for American men than women. Research has shown that men disclose less, have fewer close friendships, and are viewed by their wives as low in intimacy. Among the barriers to intimacy among men, Tognoli (1980) suggested that homophobia is the most powerful. The present study tested this idea by asking men to disclose a personal secret to either a male confidant, a female confidante, or by writing the secret. It was expected that the presence of a male confidant would stimulate homophobic feelings and inhibit disclosure, while the other two conditions would result in more personal disclosure. A correlation between intimacy of disclosure and level of homophobia was also expected. Subjects were 75 heterosexual men, 31 to 50 years of age, randomly assigned to one of the three conditions. They also completed the Miller Social Intimacy Scale, the Jourard Self-Disclosure Questionnaire, the Index of Homophobia, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Results showed that homophobia was inversely related to level of social intimacy. There was some indication that homophobia does relate to less intimate disclosure to other males. The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) exhibits a transition from stable compensated left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy to heart failure (HF) at a mean age of 21 months that is characterized by a decrease in alpha-myosin heavy chain (alpha-MHC) gene expression and increases in the expression of the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), pro-alpha1(III) collagen, and transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) genes. We tested the hypotheses that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition (ACEI) in SHR would prevent and reverse HF-associated changes in gene expression when administered prior to and after the onset of HF, respectively. We also investigated the effect of ACEI on circulating and cardiac components of the renin-angiotensin system. ACEI (captopril 2 g/L in the drinking water) was initiated at 12, 18, and 21 months of age in SHR without HF and in SHR with HF. Results were compared with those of age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, and to untreated SHR with and without evidence of HF. ACEI initiated prior to failure prevented the changes in alpha-MHC, ANF, pro-alpha1(III) collagen, and TGF-beta1 gene expression that are associated with the transition to HF. ACEI initiated after the onset of HF lowered levels of TGF-beta1 mRNA by 50% (P<.05) and elevated levels of alpha-MHC mRNA two- to threefold (P<.05). Circulating levels of renin and angiotensin I were elevated four- to sixfold by ACEI, but surprisingly, plasma levels of angiotensin II were not reduced. ACEI increased LV renin mRNA levels in WKY and SHR by two- to threefold but did not influence LV levels of angiotensinogen mRNA. The results suggest that the anti-HF benefits of ACEI in SHR may be mediated, at least in part, by effects on the expression of specific genes, including those encoding alpha-MHC, ANF, TGF-beta1, pro-alpha1(III) collagen, and renin-angiotensin system components. 相似文献

Objective: Most smoking cessation studies have used long-term abstinence as their primary outcome measure. Recent research has suggested that long-term abstinence may be an insensitive index of important smoking cessation mechanisms. The goal of the current study was to examine the effects of 5 smoking cessation pharmacotherapies using Shiffman et al.'s (2006) approach of examining the effect of smoking cessation medications on 3 process markers of cessation or smoking cessation milestones: initial abstinence, lapse, and the lapse–relapse transition. Method: The current study (N = 1,504; 58.2% female and 41.8% male; 83.9% Caucasian, 13.6% African American, 2.5% other races) examined the effect of 5 smoking cessation pharmacotherapy treatments versus placebo (bupropion, nicotine lozenge, nicotine patch, bupropion + lozenge, patch + lozenge) on Shiffman et al.'s smoking cessation milestones over 8 weeks following a quit attempt. Results: Results show that all 5 medication conditions decreased rates of failure to achieve initial abstinence and most (with the exception of the nicotine lozenge) decreased lapse risk; however, only the nicotine patch and bupropion + lozenge conditions affected the lapse–relapse transition. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that medications are effective at aiding initial abstinence and decreasing lapse risk but that they generally do not decrease relapse risk following a lapse. The analysis of cessation milestones sheds light on important impediments to long-term smoking abstinence, suggests potential mechanisms of action of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies, and identifies targets for future treatment development. Perception of the female sex pheromone in Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) is responsible for induction and adjustment of calling by females and the collective phenomenon
termed “female pheromonal chorusing”. We found five olfactory-active compounds in the U. ornatrix female gland. When females were exposed to the entire pheromone or to two of its (synthetically prepared) components, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-eicosatriene and (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-heneicosatriene, they were more likely to call during a given night, begin calling earlier, and briefly increase signal
frequency with which they extrude their abdomen, an observable indication of calling in this species. Some females even initiated
calling during photophase when exposed to the pheromone components. In general, female U. ornatrix are more sensitive to the complete blend of pheromone than to its individual compounds. We also tested the hypotheses: 1)
that abdominal extrusion per se increases the rate of pheromone release; and 2) that greater abdominal pumping rhythm increases pheromone release rate. Contrary
to our expectations: 1) females did not respond more strongly to a pulsed pheromone stimulus than to the constant release
of pheromone at the same average release rate; and 2) we did not find a relationship between the frequency of abdominal pumping

Both summer and winter butterfats were fractionated using a laboratory procedure which was designed to simulate a commercial
fractionation process. The process is based on a slow, controlled cooling of the melted fat, a short stabilization time at
the fractionation temperature, and separation of the crystals from the liquid oil by vacuum filtration using a stainless steel
perforated disc. Fractionation temperatures of 29, 26, 23 and 19 C for winter butterfat and 29 and 19 C for summer butterfat
were used to obtain solid and liquid fractions at each temperature. Three replications at each temperature showed good reproducibility
of results. The fractions were characterized by their fatty acid and triglyceride compositions, melting and crystallization
behavior, iodine value, peroxide value and melting point.

Three shear turbulence resuspension mesocosms (STORM tanks) were used to examine the release of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from resuspended Hudson River sediment. Twenty-two percent of the resuspended PCBs desorbed after 2 h, and 35% +/- 8% of PCBs were in the dissolved phase after apparent steady state was reached in 2 days. After the first resuspension event, the solids were allowed to settle and the quiescent time was varied to determine whether the labile pool of PCBs is recharged during sediment consolidation. The steady-state log Koc values for the third subsequent resuspension were higher than for the first event due to lower dissolved PCB concentrations; the particulate PCB concentrations were constant between events. With 1 day of consolidation between resuspension events, the dissolved concentration of all congeners decreased an average of 8% +/- 5% between subsequent resuspension events. With 4 days between events, only the dissolved pentachlorinated PCBs decreased significantly (p = 0.002), suggesting that the easily desorbable PCBs recharge when there is sufficient time between resuspension events. 相似文献

Insect olfactory systems present models to study interactions between animal genomes and the environment. They have evolved for fast processing of specific odorant blends and for general chemical monitoring. Here, we review molecular and physiological mechanisms in the context of the ecology of chemical signals. Different classes of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) detect volatile chemicals with various degrees of specialization. Their sensitivities are determined by an insect-specific family of receptor genes along with other accessory proteins. Whereas moth pheromones are detected by highly specialized neurons, many insects share sensitivities to chemical signals from microbial processes and plant secondary metabolism. We promote a more integrated research approach that links molecular physiology of receptor neurons to the ecology of odorants. 相似文献

Equinatoxin II (EqtII), a sea anemone cytolysin, is known to oligomerize to form pores that spontaneously insert into membranes. Crystallographic and cryo‐EM studies of structurally similar cytolysins offer contradictory evidence for pore stoichiometry. Here we used single‐molecule photobleaching of fluorescently labeled EqtII to determine the stoichiometry of EqtII oligomers in supported lipid bilayers. A frequency analysis of photobleaching steps revealed a log‐normal distribution of stoichiometries with a mean of 3.4±2.3 standard deviations. Comparison of our experimental data with simulations of fixed stoichiometries supports our observation of a heterogeneous distribution of EqtII oligomerization. These data are consistent with a model of EqtII stoichiometry where pores are on average tetrameric, but with large variation in the number of subunits in individual pores. 相似文献
