Occurrence and characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus in retail marine shrimp in China

Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative bacterium that naturally occurs in estuarine waters and marine environment. Consumption of seafood contaminated with V. vulnificus or exposure to the contaminated water causes septicemia, gastroenteritis or wound infections in humans. This study aimed at identifying the prevalence of V. vulnificus in shrimps in Chinese seafood market. From June to September 2009, 239 samples encompassing six shrimp species were collected from ten cities in China. To quantify the prevalence and the levels of V. vulnificus in shrimps, the most probable number (MPN) method was used combining with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which was used to classify the isolates by detecting V. vulnificus hemolysin gene (vvhA). One hundred and forty out of 239 samples were positive for V. vulnificus, with the geometric mean level at 153.3 MPN/g. The prevalence and levels of V. vulnificus in shrimps varied in different geographic areas, with the values for the samples in the South cities (179.6 MPN/g) remarkably higher than that in the North cities (7.6 MPN/g). In addition, we found that 61.7% (79/128) of the V. vulnificus positive samples contained C-type (Clinical) strains and 8 contained E-type (Environmental) strains. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates to 12 antibiotics was tested as well. Most of the 169 isolates remained susceptible to the majority of antimicrobials tested, whereas some strains tend to be less sensitive to amikacin, ampicillin, tetracycline and gentamicin. In conclusion, V. vulnificus is commonly found in retail marine shrimp in Chinese seafood market, and most of the shrimp samples contained C-type strains, which may pose a potential threat to human health.     

Improve on/off ratio of organic heterojunction transistors by adopting single-sandwich configuration

Organic heterojunction transistors (OHJTs) based on 5,5′″-bis(naphtha-2-yl)-2,2′:5″,2′″-quaterthiophene (NaT₄)/copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F₁₆CuPc) heterojunction were fabricated in single-sandwich and sandwich configurations, respectively. All the devices operated in depletion-accumulation (normally-on) mode. High field-effect mobility of 0.35 cm²/Vs was obtained for all devices, which was higher than that, 0.20 cm²/Vs of the devices with NaT₄ as active layer. The on/off ratio of 1 × 10⁵ was obtained for OHJTs with single-sandwich configuration, which is three orders of magnitude higher than that of OHJTs with sandwich configuration. Compared with OHJTs with sandwich configuration, the higher on/off ratio was mainly determined by the lower off state current in OHJTs with single-sandwich configuration. In OHJTs with single-sandwich configuration, the well-type shield effect of the source and drain electrodes caused a very narrow empty region in F₁₆CuPc film, which is responsible for the lower off state current.     

Crystallization and infrared radiation properties of iron ion doped cordierite glass-ceramics

Heterogeneous ion solution is an important method to improve the wanted property of polycrystalline materials. In this paper, for the purpose of infrared radiation property modification, different contents Fe₂O₃ were doped in MgO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ system glasses. The effects of Fe₂O₃ doping on nucleation mechanism, crystallization behaviors and especially infrared radiation properties of this cordierite-crystalline based glass-ceramics were systematically investigated by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that, the doping of iron ion can promote the phase separation of this magnesium aluminosilicate glass, and therefore change the crystallization mechanism of this glass from surface crystallization to bulk crystallization. The iron ion incorporates into the crystal structure of cordierite by mean of substituting Mg²⁺ in M site. The substitution of Fe³⁺ to Mg²⁺ can form the vacant site of Mg²⁺ cations. For the effects of lattice distortion, impurity and vacancy defects which caused by the incorporation of iron ion, the infrared radiation performance of cordierite based glass-ceramics can be improved effectively.

Heterotactic Enthalpic Interactions of L-Arginine with 2,2,2-Trifluoroethanoi in Aqueous Solutions at 298.15,303.15 and 310.15 K

The enthalpies of mixing of L-arginine with 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and their respective enthalpies of dilution in aqueous solutions at 298.15,303.15 and 310.15 K were determined as a function of the mole fraction by flow microcalorimetric measurement.These experimental results were analyzed to obtain heterotactic enthalpic interaction coefficients(hxy,hxxy,hxyy)according to the McMillan-Mayer theory.The hxy coefficients between L-arginine molecule studied and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol molecule in aqueous solutions at 298.15,303.15 and 310.15 K were found to be all negative.The results were discussed in terms of solute-solute interaction and solute-solvent interaction.
