The objective of this work was to develop and demonstrate a probabilistic life prediction method for the prediction of minimum fatigue lives that are typically used in the design of fracture critical rotating turbine engine components. A Monte Carlo analysis was used to predict the variability in fatigue lives based on the distribution of microstructural features that lead to early crack initiation as well as the variability in small fatigue crack growth rates. Two titanium alloys, both with bimodal microstructures, were tested and analysed in this study. The distribution of critical microstructural features was calibrated based on test results and understanding of microstructure neighbourhood effects. Testing was conducted on both alloys and included both smooth and notched specimens. The predictions are presented and compared with the data for smooth and notch geometries for the various loading conditions. A parametric study was performed to identify the importance of several model inputs and to identify areas for future improvement. 相似文献

Twenty-eight patients diagnosed as having rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) were enrolled in a study in which samples of subgingival microflora were harvested from test teeth and assayed for the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, and GCF collected and analyzed by ELISA for specific antibody for P. gingivalis. Clinical conditions were measured and recorded, and treatment by scaling and root planing provided at baseline and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Reduction in pocket depth, stabilization of attachment level, and resolution of inflammation were comparable to previously reported values. By 3 months, mean and median specific antibody concentration had decreased, and continued to decrease through 12 months. The proportion of samples in which specific antibody was not detectable increased from 27% at baseline to 73% at month 12. GCF samples from sites at which P. gingivalis was present had greater than 2-fold higher median specific antibody than samples from P. gingivalis-negative sites. At baseline, specific antibody titer of 30-second GCF samples positively correlated with pocket depth, and GCF volume significantly correlated with antibody titer and concentration, and with pocket depth. In addition, change in specific antibody titer of 30-second samples from baseline to both 6 and 12 months correlated positively with pocket depths. Thus sites infected by P. gingivalis manifested high levels of specific antibody, and levels were related to clinical status. Following treatment, antibody levels decreased significantly as pocket depths decreased, attachment levels stabilized, and inflammation resolved. 相似文献

Shoulder pain secondary to impingement of the rotator cuff tendons underneath the coracoacromial arch is a common problem seen in athletes who perform repetitive overhead activities. Shoulder impingement has been classified into primary and secondary types. Several factors contribute to impingement, including rotator cuff weakness, posterior capsule tightness, and subacromial crowding. Recently, it has been proposed that scapulothoracic muscle weakness could be a factor that contributes to impingement. Traditional rehabilitation protocols for shoulder impingement syndrome stress individualized rotator cuff strengthening. The authors propose that individualized scapulothoracic muscle strengthening should be a part of any protocol for nonoperative treatment of secondary shoulder impingement syndrome. 相似文献

The biaxial mechanical properties of right ventricular free wall (RVFW) myocardium were studied. Tissue specimens were obtained from the sub-epicardium of potassium-arrested hearts and different stretch protocols were used to characterize the myocardium's mechanical response. To assess regional differences, we excised tissue specimens from the conus and sinus regions. The RVFW myocardium was found to be consistently anisotropic, with a greater stiffness along the preferred (or averaged) fiber direction. The anisotropy in the conus region was more pronounced than in the sinus region. A comparison with studies of left ventricle (LV) midwall myocardium revealed that, 1) the fiber direction stiffnesses are greater in the RVFW than in the LV, 2) the degree of anisotropy is greater in the RVFW than in the LV. 相似文献

Although scholars agree that traditional forms of discrimination have generally been supplanted by subtler interpersonal manifestations of discrimination, it is yet unknown whether targets of these behaviors or the American judicial branch recognize such negative behaviors as violations of extant law. Extending research and theory, we propose that denigrating messages toward women and ethnic minorities (i.e., microaggressions) emerge in workplace interactions and are sometimes interpreted as discrimination. Specifically, this research explores the presence, severity, and frequency of microaggressions that appear in a random sample of race and gender discrimination cases in federal court dockets since the year 2000. The results suggest that microinsults, microinvalidations, and microassaults are reported in a variety of discrimination claims. However, only overt and intentional forms of microaggressions (microassaults) increased the likelihood that decisions favored plaintiffs. Thus, there may be a disconnect between forms of discrimination perceived by claimants and how those forms are evaluated by the legal system that protects victims of discrimination. This report reviews the nomenclature of the milk proteins of cow's milk in light of more recent advances in our knowledge. With the establishment of the primary structures of a number of these proteins, we now have a definite identification of alphas1-, kappa-, beta-, and the gamma-caseins as well as beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. On the basis of new information on their primary structures and relationship to beta-casein polymorphs, changes in nomenclature have been recommended for proteins of the gamma-casein fraction. Although the primary structure serves as the unambiguous definition of proteins for which it is known, a more practical identification is necessary. We recommend that their behavior in gel electrophoresis under suitable conditions be employed for this purpose for all of the "major" milk proteins of raw skim milk except the immunoglobulins where, because of their heterogeneity and molecular genetics, physical parameters are less useful and their identification must be based upon antigenic determinants and their homology with their human counterparts. More work is needed and, with the accumulation of more information, additional changes in nomenclature can be expected for such proteins as the minor components of alphas- and kappa-caseins, alpha-lactalbumin, and the proteose-peptone fraction as well as further confirmation of the presence of immunoglobulins IgE and additional IgG subclasses. European authorship trends in fifteen major scientific and technical bibliographic databases on the DIALOG information system are examined for works published between 1970 and 1990. There was an increasing number of records with European authors in 21% of the data set. In 6%, an overall decline was found. In 52%, authorship increased into the 1980's, and then declined. The most heavily represented countries were the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Overall, with the exception of MEDLINE, BIOSIS, and INSPEC, coverage of the works of European authors has been declining over the past twenty years, and particularly so in the last five. 相似文献

Al2O3 is a popular ceramic and has been used widely in many applications and studied in many aspects. On the other hand, zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) is a desirable material for engineering ceramics because of its high hardness, high wear resistance and high toughness. In the present research, Al2O3-Cr2O3-ZrO2 composites were produced by hot-pressing in order to harden the Al2O3 matrix in ZTA. Its microstructure and mechanical properties were studied by SEM, ESCA, XRD, Vickers hardness and bending strength test. It was found that addition of ZrO2 inhibited the grain growth of Al2O3-Cr2O3 and the grain growth of ZrO2 proceeded with increasing amounts of ZrO2 in the Al2O3-Cr2O3-Zr2 composite. The formation of solid solution Al2O3-Cr2O3 was also confirmed by XRD, and monoclinic ZrO2 increased on addition of Cr2O3. Maximum hardness was at Al2O3-10wt% Cr2O3 with 10 vol% ZrO2 and a stress-induced transformation was confirmed on the fracture surface of the specimen after the bending test. 相似文献
