An Adventure in Psychological Testing Abroad.

This article reports on the author's experience of being a member of the Michigan State University group sent to Viet Nam to give technical aid to the government of that new country in 1955. While meeting with one government official, the question arose on whether the team could give a test in order to make sure that only students who could benefit from police training would be included in an in-service training class. What follows in the article is the creation of such a test. Emphasis is placed on the difficulty of translation, test administration, reconstruction, reliability, scoring, and so forth. Penetration dynamics and interface defeat capability of silicon carbide against long Rod impact

To determine the behavior of silicon carbide (SiC) against long rod impact a detailed study with experiments in the velocity range from 0.8 to 3 km/s at normal impact conditions was performed in recent years. Interest ranged from penetration performance of intact and pre-damaged SiC to interface defeat capability of SiC. Together with impact data in the hypervelocity regime this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the penetration dynamics of SiC over a wide velocity range and during different phases of the penetration process.     

Spread spectrum signals with low probability of chip rate detection

Spread-spectrum signals that use spreading codes chosen to give a low probability of chip rate detection are examined. Pulse shaping and pseudorandom amplitude weighting are used to defeat the interceptor who uses a nonlinear circuit to generate a tone at the chip rate of the signal. The case of low input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is considered. Under this assumption, the detector output spectrum is found, and the output SNR is then used as a measure of detectability. The effect of signal pulse shape, i.e., band-limiting, on performance is studied. It is shown that a combination of band-limiting and correctly chosen amplitude weightings can, ideally, defeat any such circuit. The performance of a fourth-power envelope detector is analyzed with a combination of signal pulse shape and amplitude weighting. The amplitude distributions are binary, Gaussian, and quantized Gaussian.<>

"The development of industrial psychology in the various parts of Africa has generally followed closely upon the development of the educational system and of industry."
