Neural-fuzzy classification for segmentation of remotely sensedimages

An unsupervised classification technique conceptualized in terms of neural and fuzzy disciplines for the segmentation of remotely sensed images is presented. The process consists of three major steps: 1) pattern transformation; 2) neural classification; 3) fuzzy grouping. In the first step, the multispectral patterns of image pixels are transformed into what we call coarse patterns. In the second step, a delicate classification of pixels is attained by applying an ART neural classifier to the transformed pixel patterns. Since the resultant clusters of pixels are usually too keen to be of practical significance, in the third step, a fuzzy clustering algorithm is invoked to integrate pixel clusters. A function for measuring clustering validity is defined with which the optimal number of classes can be automatically determined by the clustering algorithm. The proposed technique is applied to both synthetic and real images. High classification rates have been achieved for synthetic images. We also feel comfortable with the results of the real images because their spectral variances are even smaller than the spectral variances of the synthetic images examined     

Accurate measurement of capture cross sections in deep level transient spectroscopy: Application to EL2 in GaAs

A rigorous formulation of capacitance changes during trap filling processes is presented and used to accurately determine the electron capture cross section of EL2 in GaAs at a particular temperature, 377K, in this case. The value, σ_n (377K) = 2.7 × 10⁻¹⁶ cm², is compared with that predicted from the emission dependence.

Balancing energy and environment: The effect and perspective of management instruments in China

The rapid growth of Chinese economy has tremendously stimulated the expansion of energy consumption. The structure of energy consumption in China is featured with the coal domination. Air pollution is becoming increasingly severe. As a result, we are confronted with the extremely arduous task to balance energy consumption and environmental protection. In order to coordinate the relationship between energy consumption and environmental protection in a strategic way, this paper analyzes comprehensively the instruments, effects and perspectives of energy-related environmental management. Meanwhile, this paper illustrates the barriers and challenges facing the energy and energy-related environmental management in China, and suggests a priority strategy of management instrument, mainly composed of energy-saving, optimization of energy structure, promulgation of environmental standards, advance in environmental technologies, internalization of environmental costs, establishment of a public benefit fund and adoption of a Renewable Portfolio System.

Uterine relaxation responses to calcitonin gene-related peptide and calcitonin gene-related peptide receptors decreased during labor in rats

OBJECTIVES: Our purpose was to investigate (1) whether uterine relaxation responses to calcitonin gene-related peptide are differentially regulated during pregnancy and labor, (2) the involvement of nitric oxide in smooth muscle relaxant action of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the rat uterus, (3) whether receptors for calcitonin gene-related peptide are expressed in rat uterus, and if so (4) whether the concentrations of these receptors are differently regulated during pregnancy and labor. STUDY DESIGN: Rats were killed on day 18 of gestation, at the time of spontaneous labor, or postpartum day 2. The uteri were removed for in vitro contractility measurements, nitric oxide production, and calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor binding assay. RESULTS: (1) Calcitonin gene-related peptide induced a dose-dependent relaxation in spontaneously contracting uterine strips from pregnant rats on day 18 of gestation; (2) the relaxation effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide on the uterus were decreased during spontaneous delivery at term and post partum compared with that during pregnancy; (3) calcitonin gene-related peptide-induced relaxation was inhibited by pretreatment of the uterine tissue with a calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist, calcitonin gene-related peptide(8-37); (4) nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor (N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester) and soluble guanylate cyclase inhibitor (LY83583) significantly decreased calcitonin gene-related peptide-induced relaxation of the rat uterus during pregnancy; (5) calcitonin gene-related peptide increased the uterine nitric oxide production in pregnant rats, and this increase was obliterated in the presence of calcitonin gene-related peptide(8-37); and (6) calcitonin gene-related peptide receptors are present in rat uterus, and the concentration of these receptors dramatically increases during pregnancy and decreases during labor at term. CONCLUSIONS: Calcitonin gene-related peptide inhibits uterine spontaneous contractions in rats during pregnancy but not during labor and post partum. The inhibitory effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide on uterine contractility appear to be modulated, at least in part, by the activation of nitric oxide generation in the rat uterus. Changes in calcitonin gene-related peptide receptors could contribute to the changes in calcitonin gene-related peptide-mediated uterine relaxation during pregnancy and labor.

实验表明，ＥＣ浓度与配体交换反应速度常数无关，体系的ｐＨ值对速度常数和９９ｍＴｃ－ＥＣ的标记率影响较大。测定并计算了不同ｐＨ值的交换反应速度常数。结果表明，为保证用配体交换法制备９９ｍｃ－ＥＣ时９９ｍｃ－ＥＣ的标记率大于９０％，体系的ｐＨ值必须≥８。     

Chemical constituents of Luffa cylindrica (L.) Roem

Six compounds were isolated from the fruits of Luffa cylindrica. They were identified as lucyosides C, E, F, H, a mixture of alpha-spinasterol and stigmasta-7,22,25-trien-3 beta-OH and a mixture of alpha-spinasteryl glucoside and delta 7,22,25-stigmasteryl-beta-D-glucoside by means of chemical evidence and spectral analysis.
