High gain wideband amplifier IC using 0.7 μm GaAs MESFETtechnology

A high gain wideband differential amplifier with a new circuit configuration is proposed and monolithically integrated by using 0.7 μm-gate GaAs MESFET IC technology. The fabricated IC exhibited gain of 16.7 dB and bandwidth of 3.2 GHz. A gain twice that of a conventional differential GaAs-MESFET amplifier was achieved with small bandwidth degradation     

Hypertension, admission blood pressure and perioperative cardiovascular risk

We performed a retrospective case-control study to investigate hypertension and admission blood pressure as risk factors for postoperative cardiovascular death. We identified records of 76 patients who had died of a cardiovascular cause within 30 days of anaesthesia and elective surgery and 76 matched controls. From the records of each patient (case and control) we recorded the admission blood pressure and details of any history of hypertension. A pre-operative history of hypertension was strongly associated with perioperative cardiovascular death (p < 0.001 with one degree of freedom: odds ratio 4.14, 95% confidence intervals 1.63-11.69). There was no association between systolic or diastolic pressure at admission for operation and perioperative cardiovascular death. The mean admission systolic pressure of the cases was 145.5 mmHg (range 90-250 mmHg) and that of the controls was 146.5 mmHg (range 100-200 mmHg). The mean admission diastolic pressure of the cases was 83.2 mmHg (range 60-130 mmHg), and that of the controls was 84.5 mmHg (range 60-110 mmHg).     

Synthesis of well-defined graft copolymer with oligodimethylsiloxane and polyvinylalcohol branches

Summary Polyvinylalcohol macromer of well controlled molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, whose hydroxyl groups being protected as silyl ethers, was synthesized by Lewis acid catalyzed sequential silyl aldol condensation. Copolymerization of p-oligodimethylsiloxanylstyrene with the macromer, followed by the removal of the hydroxyl protective groups, gave the well-defined title graft copolymer.     

Ocular vascular endothelial growth factor levels in diabetic rats are elevated before observable retinal proliferative changes

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic factor. VEGF levels in ocular tissue of 6-, 12-, 18- and 28-week-old Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a well-known model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes, were evaluated by highly sensitive ELISA. VEGF concentrations in the GK rat as well as in non-diabetic Wistar rat significantly decreased from the age of 6 weeks to 18 weeks. However, although VEGF concentrations in the Wistar rat continued to fall significantly from 18 to 28 weeks of age, the levels were maintained between 18 and 28 weeks of age in GK rats. Levels were significantly different between the GK and Wistar rats at 28 weeks of age. Results of immunohistochemical studies of the eyes of Wistar and GK rats at 28 weeks of age suggest diffuse distribution of this cytokine in cells of neural origin. Weak to moderate VEGF immunoreactivity was exhibited mainly in the ganglion cell layer, inner plexiform layer and inner/outer nuclear layers in rats with and without diabetes. However, in the retinal optic nerve fiber layer, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, strong VEGF immunoreactivity was noted only in the GK rat. In conclusion, increased VEGF production in certain ocular tissue, similar to that in humans, is observed quite early, at least before the appearance of observable retinal changes in the diabetic GK rat. This also suggests that the GK rat can be used as a model of initial or latent phase diabetic retinopathy.     

547-GHz f/sub t/ In/sub 0.7/Ga/sub 0.3/As-In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As HEMTs with reduced source and drain resistance

We fabricated 30-nm gate pseudomorphic channel In/sub 0.7/Ga/sub 0.3/As-In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with reduced source and drain parasitic resistances. A multilayer cap structure consisting of Si highly doped n/sup +/-InGaAs and n/sup +/-InP layers was used to reduce these resistances while enabling reproducible 30-nm gate process. The HEMTs also had a laterally scaled gate-recess that effectively enhanced electron velocity, and an adequately long gate-channel distance of 12nm to suppress gate leakage current. The transconductance (g/sub m/) reached 1.5 S/mm, and the off-state breakdown voltage (BV/sub gd/) defined at a gate current of -1 mA/mm was -3.0 V. An extremely high current gain cutoff frequency (f/sub t/) of 547 GHz and a simultaneous maximum oscillation frequency (f/sub max/) of 400 GHz were achieved: the best performance yet reported for any transistor.     

The effects of lidocaine on the vulnerable period during ventricular fibrillation

INTRODUCTION: It was postulated that a subthreshold defibrillation shock failed to halt ventricular fibrillation because the shock itself reinitiated ventricular fibrillation by falling into the vulnerable period of the wavefronts. Whether or not the timing of the vulnerable period is determined by the ventricular fibrillation cycle length is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: We determined the patterns of epicardial activation in ten dogs by computerized mapping techniques during unsuccessful defibrillation. Lidocaine was then given to prolong the ventricular fibrillation cycle length, and the computerized mapping studies were repeated. The results showed that lidocaine increased the ventricular fibrillation cycle length from 110 +/- 13 msec to 156 +/- 5 msec (P < 0.001). Among 55 episodes of unsuccessful defibrillation, the site of the earliest postshock activation occurred in the center of the mapped tissue 12 times at baseline and 14 times during lidocaine infusion. At electrodes that registered as postshock early sites, the preshock intervals clustered within a narrow range both before (58 +/- 14 msec) and during (101 +/- 18 msec, P < 0.001) lidocaine infusion. The correlation between the preshock intervals and the ventricular fibrillation cycle length was significant for these 26 sites (r = 0.87, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: We conclude that a vulnerable period is present during ventricular fibrillation, and the timing of the vulnerable period is determined by the ventricular fibrillation cycle length.     

Eicosapentaenoic acid enhances nitric oxide production by cultured human endothelial cells

Flt-1, a tyrosine kinase receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), plays important roles in the angiogenesis required for embryogenesis and in monocyte/macrophage migration. However, the signal transduction of Flt-1 is poorly understood due to its very weak tyrosine kinase activity. Therefore, we overexpressed Flt-1 in insect cells using the Baculovirus system in order to examine for autophosphorylation sites and association with adapter molecules such as phospholipase Cgamma-1 (PLCgamma). Tyr-1169 and Tyr-1213 on Flt-1 were found to be auto-phosphorylated, but only a phenylalanine mutant of Tyr-1169 strongly suppressed its association with PLCgamma. In Flt-1 overexpressing NIH3T3 cells, VEGF induced autophosphorylation of Flt-1, tyrosine-phosphorylation of PLCgamma and protein kinase C-dependent activation of MAP kinase. These results strongly suggest that Tyr-1169 on Flt-1 is a major binding site for PLCgamma and important for Flt-1 signal transduction within the cell.
