Role of hepatic resection in surgery for bilateral intrahepatic stones

The effect of phenylephrine-induced reflex parasympathetic stimulation on QT interval and its dispersion was studied in 16 healthy subjects with a history of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, both during sinus rhythm and during atrial pacing. Results demonstrate that rapid reflex parasympathetic stimulation does not influence QT interval duration or QT dispersion, and also emphasize the inappropriateness of Bazett's formula, the need for comparison of QT intervals during identical heart rates, and the importance of analyzing all 12 leads of a standard electrocardiogram when assessing the effects of various interventions on the QT interval.     

Increase of catalyst utilization in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells by shape-selected Pt nanoparticles

In the present work, we succeeded in supporting predominantly cuboctahedral Pt nanoparticles onto high surface area carbons while maintaining their shape. These novel catalysts were applied in a realistic fuel cell set-up for the first time and showed remarkable fuel cell performance. A 95% fraction of cuboctahedral Pt nanoparticles was synthesized using tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) as a stabilizer. Transmission electron micrographs of the synthesized samples demonstrated the presence of monodispersed cuboctahedral particles of 12 nm in size. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies of the unsupported cuboctahedral nanoparticles revealed the presence of Pt (110) and (100) facets. The shape-selected Pt nanoparticles were let to absorb onto Vulcan carbon by a simple dispersing procedure to obtain supported shape-selected Pt nanoparticles. Only by this gentle adsorption step of the surfactant-stabilized nanoparticles on the carbonaceous support material, the nanoparticles retained their shape. Finally an MEA was fabricated using the supported shape-selected nanoparticles and tested in a realistic H₂-PEM fuel cell environment. In terms of Pt utilization, shape-selected Pt particles were found to be more effective by a factor of four in weight compared to the commercial catalyst.

A tachykinin NK3 receptor antagonist, SR 142801 (osanetant), prevents substance P-induced bronchial hyperreactivity in guinea-pigs

Aerosolized substance P (0.1 M, for 30 min) induced airway hyperresponsiveness in guinea-pigs 24 h after they were pre-treated with salbutamol (8.7 mM by aerosol for 10 min) and phosphoramidon (0.1 mM by aerosol for 10 min). This was displayed by an exaggerated response to the bronchoconstrictor effect of acetylcholine. A microvascular leakage hypersensitivity also occurred and was demonstrated by a potentiation of the plasma protein extravasation from bronchial vessels induced by histamine. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the non-peptide and potent tachykinin NK3 receptor antagonist, SR 142801 (osanetant), in comparison with those of the tachykinin NK1 and NK2 receptor antagonists, SR 140333 (nolpitantium) and SR 48968 (saredutant) respectively, on substance P. When given once at 1 mg/kg i.p. 45 min before exposure to substance P, SR 142801 prevented both hyperresponsiveness to acetylcholine and the potentiation of histamine-induced increase in microvascular permeability. SR 142801 did not exhibit any tachykinin NK1 or NK2 antagonistic activity in experiments on guinea-pig isolated airways, in vitro or in vivo. The results suggest that tachykinin NK3 receptors might be involved in these substance P-induced effects on airways.     

Analysis of target response of FM-CW radar

Detection and location of different targets buried in ground or constructional walls depends to a great extent on the knowledge of expected target return response. The analysis of the target-radar response for FM-CW ground probing radar is performed with the aid of a signal flow diagram relating the target response and the radar performance. A plane wave model for the radar radiated electromagnetic waves is adopted and the analysis is carried out for two typical targets; a finite thickness slab and a sphere. Computed returns based on this analysis are compared with those obtained experimentally from a 1-2 GHz FM-CW radar scheme and a very close agreement is found. A computational study is conducted on the response of planar target model, and important conclusions are reached upon relevant to ground probing problem.     

Effectiveness of evacuating combustible gases by two parallel expellers closely coupled at one end of a gas pipeline

Expeller performance has been formulated in terms of its capability to create suction pressure at the throat. This formulation has been used to assess the effectiveness of evacuating combustible gases from a pipeline section from one end using dual expellers mounted in parallel on two adjacent blow-down stacks. A general formulation was derived to address any situation of asymmetry in the stack resistance, asymmetry in the expellers' power as well overall pipeline resistance to suction flow. Solutions of the closed-form equations were obtained and presented on performance graphs showing the ratio of the suction flow using dual expellers to that using either one in a single mode. It was found that there are conditions at which expelling with dual expellers exceed that of either expeller operating alone. It was also shown that when asymmetric expellers are used, where one expeller is more powerful than the other, the benefits of using two expellers is realized up to a limiting degree of asymmetry, beyond which the weaker expeller could be stalled and then reverse flow.
