The soldier frontal gland secretion ofNasutitermes princeps induces strong short-range caste-specific alarm and attraction in both soldiers and workers. Soldiers are excited and patrol the surroundings of the source. The secretion per se does not induce ejection of additional secretion. Large workers of the second stage or older are massively attracted when tested in homogeneous groups. They focus their activities much more accurately than the soldiers around the source. The workers' reaction is less intense in the presence of soldiers. Large and small workers of stage 1 scarcely react at all to the secretion, whether tested in homogeneous or mixed groups. These results suggest the following complementary roles of soldiers and workers in defense. The first line of defense is provided by soldiers, which immobilize and incapacitate mobile enemies with their sticky secretion. Defense then is completed by older large workers as they eliminate the source of disturbance. The absence of reaction of young workers, small or large, confirms previous reports on age polyethism inNasutitermes observed in other contexts: young workers tend to stay in the nest. Alarm reactions are elicited by a source of (+)--pinene, the major monoterpene in the secretion, while its enantiomer, almost absent from the secretion, induces a much weaker reaction.  相似文献

Some odorant lactones are naturally present in fruits or in fermented products; they can also be used as food additives and can be produced by microorganisms at the industrial scale by biotechnological processes. Gamma-decalactone was previously shown to have antimicrobial properties. We determined by infrared spectroscopy measurements that this compound rapidly diffused into model phospholipid bilayers (within 2 min), modifying the general physical state of a dimyristoyl-L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) film. In vivo, the lactone strongly increased membrane fluidity in the model yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, as evaluated by fluorescence anisotropy measurements. This effect was more important than that of benzyl alcohol, which is known as a fluidizing agent in living cells, and may explain the toxic action of gamma-decalactone in microorganisms.  相似文献

This article describes an approach to designing a distributed and modular neural classifier. This approach introduces a new hierarchical clustering that enables one to determine reliable regions in the representation space by exploiting supervised information. A multilayer perceptron is then associated with each of these detected clusters and charged with recognizing elements of the associated cluster while rejecting all others. The obtained global classifier is comprised of a set of cooperating neural networks and completed by a K-nearest neighbor classifier charged with treating elements rejected by all the neural networks. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) targeting either the 35S promoter or the Bt176 specific junction sequence were developed to screen for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and specifically detect Bt176 maize in flours and starches. Two additional PCR-ELISA assays were developed to validate the results: one, based on the detection of the maize alcohol dehydrogenase 1 promoter specifically detected the presence of maize, and the other, based on the detection of a conserved sequence of plants ( 26S ribosomal RNA gene), validated the extracted DNA amplification. The PCR-ELISA assays developed here were highly specific and found to be as sensitive as the reference Southern hybridisation assay. The PCR-ELISA tests were at least 6 times more sensitive than gel electrophoresis and allowed 0.1% GMOs to be detected in Bt176, Bt11, Mon810 maize and Roundup Ready soybean. The PCR-ELISA tests are a method of choice for GMO screening and identifying Bt176 maize in flours and native starches. They may offer a cheaper alternative to the expensive real-time PCR assays and may be useful in laboratory GMO monitoring.  相似文献

In the present work, Pb(2+) and Cd(2+) adsorption onto a natural polysaccharide has been studied in membrane reactors. The process involves a stirred semi-batch reactor for the adsorption step and a microfiltration (MF) process in order to confine the particles. Due to their lower affinity for the biosorbent, Cd(2+) ions were found to breakthrough the process faster than Pb(2+) cations. The experimental results showed the technical feasibility of the pilot. A mass balance model based on the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm was used to describe the adsorption process. This relation is able to predict experimental data under different operating conditions: the adsorbent and metal concentrations, and the permeate flow rate. Based on these results, it is demonstrated that the biosorbent studied represents an interesting low-cost solution for the treatment of metal ions polluted waters.  相似文献

We present nmr measurements in a 6.2% 3 He- 4 He mixture carried out at 11.3 T with temperatures down to 3.5 mK, yielding a very high B/T ratio. We have measured the transverse spin diffusion with the spin-echo technique. We observe a saturation of the spin diffusion coefficient at low temperature corresponding to an anisotropy temperature Ta13mK. Using the same setup, we were able to excite Silin spin-wave modes in the experimental cell.  相似文献

Plasma polymerization processes are widely used to chemically functionalize surfaces, which properties can be tuned by different operating variables. In this study, thin amine-containing polymer layers were produced on solid substrates in a custom-made cylindrical plasma polymerization reactor by radio frequency glow discharges of n-heptylamine vapours. Carefully planned experiments were conducted to evaluate the importance of four different process parameters on the chemical composition and thickness of the resulting films. The parameters investigated were: 1) deposition time, 2) power of the glow discharge, 3) distance between the electrodes, and 4) monomer pressure. Possible interactions between these variables were investigated through the use of statistical analyses (i.e., factorial design). This study reveals that n-heptylamine plasma polymer (HApp) layer thickness is influenced by the power of the glow discharge and the deposition time, as assessed by surface plasmon resonance and atomic force microscopy step height measurements. Also, the atomic ratio of nitrogen to carbon atoms on the treated surfaces is mainly influenced by the power of the glow discharge, as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Quartz crystal microbalance analysis also confirmed that HApp layers are stable when immersed in aqueous solution.  相似文献

The question ‘What stimulates teachers to integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in their pedagogical practices?’ was addressed in the context of teachers’ usage of digital learning materials (DLMs). We adopted Fishbein’s Integrative Model of Behavior Prediction (IMBP), to investigate the various relationships between distal and proximal variables and intention. Mediation analysis revealed that the proximal variables attitude, subjective norm, and self-efficacy towards DLMs were significant predictors of teachers’ intention to use DLMs. The contribution of subjective norm, however, was modest. Attitude, subjective norm and self-efficacy mediated the effects of the following three distal variables on intention: previous use of DLMs, perceived knowledge and skills to use DLMs, and colleagues’ usage of DLMs. Persuasive communication and skills based training seem, therefore, appropriate interventions to promote a positive attitude towards DLMs and improve self-efficacy in using DLMs.  相似文献

The use of electronic equipment and embedded computing technologies in modern complex transportation systems continues to grow in a highly competitive market, in which product maintainability and availability is vital. These technological advances also make fault diagnosis and maintenance interventions much more challenging, since these operations require a deep understanding of the entire system. This paper proposes a holonic cooperative fault diagnosis approach, along with a generic architecture, to increase the embedded diagnosis capabilities of complex transportation systems. The goal of this study was to determine the relative contribution of environmental and spatial processes governing the distribution of larval and juvenile yellow perch (Perca flavescens) in two shallow embayments of a large fluvial lake on the St. Lawrence River system. We tested the hypotheses that: i) larval distribution is not related to habitat characteristics, presumably due to their relatively low swimming capacity, whereas ii) these environmental variables drive juvenile distribution, reflecting a more active habitat selection. This study is one of the first attempts to partition the relative roles of environmental and spatial factors in shaping the distribution of a freshwater fish through its early ontogeny. We show that larvae were not spatially aggregated within the embayments and that habitat characteristics, mainly related to aquatic vegetation, played an important role in explaining their distribution. In contrast, juvenile abundances were not significantly related to habitat characteristics, despite being spatially structured over multiple scales. Contrary to our predictions, habitat association was stronger for larvae than for juveniles which were aggregated independent of habitat characteristics. Increased swimming capacities may thus facilitate the aggregation of juveniles rather than strengthening their association with habitat, at least at the scales considered here (ca 3 km2). These results shed a new light on the factors governing larval and juvenile yellow perch distribution, suggesting that active habitat choice might begin earlier than previously thought.  相似文献
