Study of heat and mass transfer in indoor conditions for distillation

An indoor simulation study was carried out to evaluate heat and mass transfer relation for a semi-cylindrical metallic (opaque) condensing cover for higher yields at different operating temperatures under free and forced modes of operation. The objective is to design a distillation unit for higher yield for commercialization, particularly in India. Experiments have been conducted for the operating temperature range of 40°C to 80°C in a steady-state condition by using constant temperature bath. Data (temperature and yield) obtained from experimentation have been used to determine the values of coefficient C and n and, consequently, convective as well as evaporative heat transfer coefficients. It is inferred that a higher yield is obtained with an increase of temperature in the forced mode of operation as compared to that in the natural mode of operation due to a fast release of heat from the condensing cover.     

Assessment of carbonic anhydrase activity in blood by alteration in pH

Carbonic anhydrase enzyme activity could be measured by manometeric and colorimetric techniques. A simpler and modified method of carbonic anhydrase enzyme activity assessment in blood is proposed. In the present method differences in pH by hydration of CO2 in absence and presence of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor have been used to measure the carbonic anhydrase activity in the blood.     

Direct method of overmodulation with integrated closed loop stator flux vector control

Overmodulation achieves full utilization of installed dc link voltage, by modifying the magnitude and the phase of reference voltage vector. Due to the nonlinear behavior in this region, closed loop vector control becomes difficult. A simple method of overmodulation with closed loop control of stator flux vector is proposed in this paper. Instead of modifying the voltage reference by nonlinear equations or look up table, we propose a direct method to generate the switching times. In so doing, the average angular velocity of the stator flux vector is controlled linearly throughout the modulation range. The proposed method shows lower harmonic distortion compared with existing methods. It greatly reduces the complexity and cost of achieving overmodulation over existing schemes.     

Effect of operating current dependent series resistance on the fill factor of a solar cell

The fill factor of a solar cell depends upon the series resistance, reverse saturation current, diode quality factor, operating current and voltage. Since the series resistance itself depends upon the operating current (or voltage), it makes the evaluation of fill factor very complicated. In this paper, we have evaluated the fill factor of a solar cell, taking into account operating current dependence of the series resistance.     

Expression of growth factor mRNAs by human Tenon''s capsule fibroblasts

We determined the nucleotide sequences of Norwalk-like viruses in 10 PCR products from stool or oyster specimens obtained from four outbreaks of gastroenteritis in which shellfish was suspected as the cause in Shizuoka prefecture in Japan between 1987-94. The sequences were determined from nucleotide positions 4561-4852 (292 bp) in the polymerase region. Two types of sequences were detected. One (genotype 1) had 87% sequence homology with the prototype Norwalk virus, and the other (genotype 2) had 59% sequence homology. The sequences from isolates belonging to the same genotype were almost the same regardless of the year of isolation. Because sequences of 2 genotypes were detected in 2 of the 4 outbreaks, nested PCR was performed with genotype-specific primers to detect the presence of 2 genotypes in the same specimen. In 5 of 10 specimens, PCR bands were detected with both genotype-specific primers, indicating the coexistence of 2 genotypes in 1 specimen. We also detected two genotypes of Norwalk-like virus in an oyster from a sample implicated in one of the outbreaks which may provide direct evidence of oysters as the cause of the gastroenteritis.     

Studies on thermodynamic compatibility of nitrile rubber and polybutadiene by inverse gas chromatography

Inverse gas chromatography technique has been used to study the thermodynamic compatibility of the industrially important elastomers polybutadiene (BR) and polybutadiene copolymerised with acrylonitrile (NBR). The NBR used in this study had nitrile contents of 18 and 34%. The ratio of BR/NBR in blends varied between 1 and 0.25 in both cases and retention volume of twelve probes was measured at 80°C. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter X′₂₃, computed using a standard procedure, and also the interaction parameter B₂₃ showed that BR and NBR are incompatible in all compositions and that incompatibility increases with nitrile content. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
