LES analysis of flow and turbulent mixing in an unsteady jet

The flow and mixing process of unsteady jets are fundamentally analyzed by large eddy simulations. The effects of nozzle velocity and turbulence intensity on the turbulent eddy structure and mixing process between the nozzle fluid and ambient fluid were investigated. The results show that a toroidal‐shaped vortex, which emerges around the jet tip, primarily accelerates the entraining flow. Also, increasing the turbulence intensity in the nozzle encourages mixing in the jet without changing the jet‐contour. Furthermore, when the rise‐up time of the initial nozzle velocity is elongated, turbulent mixing is suppressed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nano-strip grating lines self-organized by a high speed scanning CW laser

After a laser annealing experiment on Si wafer, we found an asymmetric sheet resistance on the surface of the wafer. Periodic nano-strip grating lines (nano-SGLs) were self-organized along the trace of one-time scanning of the continuous wave (CW) laser. Depending on laser power, the nano-trench formed with a period ranging from 500 to 800 nm with a flat trough between trench structures. This simple method of combining the scanning laser with high scanning speed of 300 m min(-1) promises a large area of nanostructure fabrication with a high output. As a demonstration of the versatile method, concentric circles were drawn on silicon substrate rotated by a personal computer (PC) cooling fan. Even with such a simple system, the nano-SGL showed iridescence from the concentric circles.

Reversible Molecular Rearrangement of Slightly Acid-treated Starches

The reersible association and dissociation of starch chain populations obtained from acid-treated starches (ATSs) was investigated. Potato starch, both nonglutinous and glutinous rice starches and sago starch were suspended in 15% sulfuric acid until 1% hydroysis occured. These ATSs had relative molecular weight ranges of 25,00–29,000 daltons. In water, about half the molecules were reconstituted into large aggregates of a few million daltons. This change in molecular size depended on presence of potassium chloride. It was not observed in debranched samples. The aggregates showed a clear endothermic peak on a DSC curve. Thus, the reversibly rearranging starch chain populations were not linear, but were branched and had some type of ordered structure.     

BIOCHEMICAL DIFFERENCES IN SOCKEYE SALMON THAT ARE OCEAN FEEDING AND ON THE SPAWNING GROUNDS

Various biochemical parameters measured in sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, feeding in the Gulf of Alaska in July during the maturation process were contrasted with those obtained from mature sockeye salmon in Steep Creek, a small salmon stream near Juneau, Alaska. Degenerative changes in muscles, such as decrease in total lipid and protein contents in mature salmon were attributed both to the progressed activation of lipid hydrolytic enzymes and to autolytic activity, in addition to the inactivation of lipid and protein syntheses in muscle and liver. The depletion of lipid is associated with the energy utilization for migration and gonadal maturation as a result of the cessation of feeding.     

Formation of Myofibrillar Fragments and Reversible Contraction of Sarcomeres in Chicken Pectoral Muscle

SUMMARY— As morphological changes occurred in the pectoral muscles of chicken carcasses during 48 hr storage at 5°C, two notable phenomena were observed: (1) fragmentation of myofibrils and (2) reversible or irreversible contraction of sarcomeres. When blendorized, myofibrils tend to break into small fragments composed of 1-4 sarcomeres with time post-mortem. It was also found that besides an irreversible post-mortem contraction of sarcomeres generally accepted, a reversible contraction can take place under particular conditions.
