Solubility of chloride in molten magnesium metal

The solubilities of chloride (Cl) in liquid magnesium (Mg) have been determined from the analysis of quenched samples of liquid Mg equilibrated with NaCl-MgCl₂ melts of different compositions at temperatures in the range 650–790 °C. As an example, the solubility of Cl in liquid Mg in contact with pure MgCl₂ at 735 °C was found to be approximately 18 ppm. The Cl solubility was found to be proportional to the square root of the MgCl₂ activity in the NaCl-MgCl₂ melt, indicating that MgCl₂ dissolved according to the reaction 0.5MgCl₂ + 0.5Mg(l) = MgCl (in Mg). The temperature dependency of the solubility also was measured. Thermodynamic values related to the dissolution of MgCl₂ in liquid Mg have been estimated.

Finite element formulation for inflatable beams

The discretized nonlinear equations for bending and buckling of inflatable beams are written by use of the virtual work principle with Timoshenko's kinematics, finite rotations and small strains. The linearized equations around a pre-stressed reference configuration are then deduced, giving rise to a new inflatable beam finite element. The stiffness matrix contains the shear coefficient and the internal pressure. Use is made of the particular 3-node beam element to investigate the bending and the buckling of a cantilever beam, the deflection of a pinched torus and the buckling of a torus submitted to a radial compressive force. The numerical results obtained with the beam element are shown to be close to analytical and three-dimensional (3D) membrane finite element results. The validity of the numerical results is discussed, in connection with the concepts of the crushing force or the wrinkling pressure of the inflated beam.     

Reduction of wound healing problems after median sternotomy by use of retention sutures

Obese people have a higher risk of sternal wound dehiscence resulting from traction of suprasternal tissue. In such patients we recommend the use of retention sutures with extracorporeal plates to improve tissue connection and to disburden fascia and skin sutures. This augmented closure is simple and effective and, since 1996, has prevented wound healing problems in more than 50 patients with a body mass index greater than 27.     

Comparison of the plasma pharmacokinetics and renal clearance of didanosine during once and twice daily dosing in HIV-1 infected individuals

OBJECTIVE: To compare the plasma pharmacokinetics of didanosine during once daily (qd) and twice daily (bid) dosing. DESIGN: Open-label, randomized, cross-over study. METHODS: HIV-1 infected patients who used didanosine were randomized to either a qd or a bid dosing regimen of didanosine. The total daily dose of didanosine was identical in both regimens. Seven days after the start of the study, the pharmacokinetic profile of didanosine in plasma and urine was assessed during an 8-h period. The next day, the patient was switched to the opposite dosing regimen, and after another 7 days, the study was concluded by again assessing the plasma and urine pharmacokinetics of didanosine during 8 h. RESULTS: A total of 19 patients completed the study. The pharmacokinetics of didanosine in plasma (with maximum plasma concentration adjusted for dose) and urine were not significantly different in the qd and bid dosing regimen (P > 0.28 for all parameters). CONCLUSION: We conclude that qd dosing of didanosine leads to a similar exposure in plasma as bid dosing (using the same total daily dose). Since qd dosing may lead to improved compliance of patients to regimens containing didanosine, these results provide a rationale for prescribing didanosine in a qd regimen, and is reassuring when we realize that the drug is being administered in a qd dosing regimen on a large scale in clinical practice.
