On the wing of the moth Trichoplusia orichalcea a prominent, apparently highly reflective, golden spot can be seen. Scales from this area of the wing exhibit a regular microstructure resembling a submicrometer herringbone pattern. A simple method for mapping the surface defects of a Fabry-Perot étalon is described. Images of the fringes of equal thickness are acquired as the plate separation is altered in a stepwise manner. The complete 16-element Mueller matrices for backscattering from amino acids, sugars, and other enantiomorphic compounds pressed into wafer form were measured at infrared wavelengths. For each compound a pair of CO(2) laser lines was selected from the 9.1-11.6-mum region such that one line excited an absorption band in the compound, whereas the other did not. It was observed that at least some of the matrix elements differed significantly depending on which of the two wavelengths was used in the measurement. We propose that a neural network pattern recognition system can be trained to detect the presence of specific compounds based on multiwavelength backscatter Mueller matrix measurements. 相似文献

We have designed and constructed a linear polarizer for use with visible and infrared radiation. The broadband polarizer consists of four germanium plates arranged in a chevron geometry. Input radiation is incident near Brewster's angle for the first plate such that the reflected beam is preferentially s-wave polarized. This reflected beam is steered subsequently to the successive plates, always intersecting near Brewster's angle. The beam polarization at the output of the device is almost completely s-wave polarized. The ratio of the paraxial flux of the nearly extinguished p-wave polarized light to the s-wave polarized light transmitted through the device is found to be less than 10(-5) for laser illumination at wavelengths of 0.633, 1.32, 3.39, and 10.6 mum. Calculations predict that extinction ratios less than 10(-5) are achievable over the wavelength range from 0.4 mum to beyond 500 mum. We present a multiple-input, single-output, weakly nonlinear model of spatial light modulators by use of a second-order Volterra series and describe an experimental method to measure the nonlinear transfer functions by means of sinusoidal perturbation and synchronous detection with a lock-in amplifier. Methods to fabricate planar capillary electrophoresis devices integrated with a postcolumn reactor in fused silica (quartz) and Pyrex glass are presented. Quartz is etched at ~1 μm/min with a 2.1:1 width-to-depth ratio using a Cr/Au/Cr metal mask and concentrated HF/HNO(3). On-chip postcolumn reaction of o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) and amino acids gave theoretical plate numbers up to 83?000 and ~90 ms peak widths, corresponding to 14 plates/V and a 0.5 μm theoretical plate height. The synthetic pyrethroid insecticide tetramethrin may be reduced reversibly (E°' = -1.650 V vs Ag/Ag(+)) in acetonitrile at hanging mercury drop electrodes (HMDE) and glassy carbon electrodes. On the voltammetric time scale, the initial electron-transfer process involves the reversible formation of a radical anion. Data obtained from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicate that the unpaired electron of the radical is located within the phthalimide system of the molecule. The radical anion may be further reduced at very negative applied potentials with the number of processes being dependent on the nature of the voltammetric technique. The detection limit (3σ) for the determination of tetramethrin in acetonitrile at a glassy carbon electrode, using differential pulse voltammetry, was found to be 2.1 × 10(-6) M. At a HMDE the detection limit is lower, having a value of 9.6 × 10(-7) M. The limit of determination (10σ) at a glassy carbon electrode is 3.5 × 10(-6) M and at a HMDE is 3.0 × 10(-6) M. Tetramethrin was selectively determined in an insecticide formulation, at a glassy carbon electrode using differential pulse voltammetry, at a concentration (w/v) of 0.34 ± 0.02%.
