The present study was designed to examine the effects of EFA deficiency (EFAD) on biochemical, functional, and structural
aspects of the kidney in growing and adult rats fed a normal or EFAD diet for 9 wk after weaning. Food and fluid intake (FI),
urine volume, and Na+ and K+ excretions were measured weekly from weeks 4 to 8 by placing the rats in individual metabolic cages for 24 h. At week 9,
Li+ and a 5% water load, respectively, were administered at 14 and 1.5 h prior to glomerular and proximal tubular function studies,
as assessed by 3-h creatinine (CCr) and Li+ (CLi+) clearances. Hematocrit and urine volume; serum and urine [Cr], [Li+], [Na+], and [K+]; and renal FA distribution were also measured. Data [corrected to 100 g/body weight (bw) and presented as means ±SEM] were
significant, at P<-0.05. Despite a similar ingestion of solids from weeks 4 to 7 (weeks 7 to 10 of life), the rats on the EFAD diet showed
a decreased body weight from week 5. From weeks 4 to 8, Fl and urine volume were similar for both groups, but the Fl increased
at week 6 in the EFAD group; 24-h Na+ and K+ excretions were similar at all weeks, except for an increase in the EFAD group for both ions at week 7. In the EFAD group,
CCr and CLi+ decreased by 27 and 56.3%, respectively (385.7±33.4 vs. 280±21.1, and 21.0±2.1 vs. 9.2±1.1 μL/min/100 g; n=9 vs. 10), the latter result suggesting increased proximal reabsorption. The 3-h Na+ and K+ excretions were similar, but the Li+ decreased (0.78±0.06×10−2 vs. 0.32±0.03×10−2 μeq/min/100 g) in the EFAD group, giving additional support to the suggestion. Renal structure was normal and similar for
both groups, but the EFAD group showed a more prominent proximal tubule brush border, together with heavier periodic acid-Schiff
staining in all specimens from weeks 5 to 9. In the EFAD group, FA of the n−9 and n−7 series were higher, but most of the
n−6 series were lower as a percentage of total lipids in the medulla and cortex. Medullary levels of 20∶4n−6 were maintained,
22∶4n−6 declined twice, arachidonic acid was maintained, and 20∶5n−3 was lower. The EFAD diet affected glomerular function,
proximal tubular structure and function, and FA distribution in the rat kidney. 相似文献

Thirty-six castorbean varieties were surveyed for oil and fatty acid composition, in order to determine variability of these
seed compounds. A large variability of seed oil percentage was observed, ranging from 39.6 to 59.5%. Concerning the fatty
acids, little variability was observed for ricinoleic acid, which was the most abundant in the oil, ranging from 83.65 to
90.00%. The other fatty acids appeared in small concentrations and showed a small range: 0.87 to 2.35, 0.68 to 1.84, 2.96
to 5.64, 3.19 to 5.98, and 0.34 to 0.91%, for palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid, respectively. Non-significant
correlations were observed between fatty acids and seed oil percentage. However, significant correlations were observed among
fatty acid concentrations: positive and negative ones. These significant correlations could be associated with the biosynthetic
pathways of the fatty acids, which are not fully elucidated. They suggest, however, that selection for a particular fatty
acid will tend to increase those positively correlated, and decrease those negative ones. Selection and plant breeding techniques
could then be applied to modify the oil content of the castorbean seeds, considering the variability observed. For the fatty
acid composition, however, the variability was not large enough to make substantial changes in their concentrations by selection
procedures. More varieties should be surveyed to find out if such variability is available. 相似文献

α-alumina (α-Al2 O3 , corundum) fibers exhibit high thermal and chemical stability, as well as good mechanical properties, even at high temperatures. Such characteristics make them good candidates for use in composites. Nevertheless, very few methods of producing α-Al2 O3 fibers are available. In the present work, we describe a method that uses aluminum pieces deposited on SiO2 powder, in an argon atmosphere, at temperatures in the range 1300°–1600°C. The α-Al2 O3 fibers are obtained via vapor-liquid-solid deposition. The novel addition of nickel and cobalt (or their oxides) allows the use of temperatures >1500°C, resulting in improved fiber production. We demonstrate that the metals do not contaminate the fibers produced in this way. Finally, we also estimate the tensile strength of the Al2 O3 fibers produced through this method. 相似文献

13C NMR spectra of oil fractions obtained chromatographically from 109 vegetable oils were obtained and analyzed to evaluate
the potential use of those fractions in the classification of vegetable oils and to compare the results with the NMR analysis
of complete oils. The oils included the following: virgin olive oils from different cultivars and regions of Europe and north
Africa; “lampante” olive, refined olive, refined olive pomace, hazelnut, rapeseed, high-oleic sunflower, corn, grapeseed,
soybean, and sunflower oils; and mixtures of virgin olive oils from different geographical origins. Oils were divided into
two sets of samples. The training set (98 samples) was employed to select the variables that resulted in significant discrimination
among the different oil classes. By using stepwise discriminant analysis, more than 98% of correct validated assignments were
obtained; these results were confirmed when applied to the test set (11 blind samples). Results suggest that the use of oil
fractions considerably increases the discriminating power of NMR in the analysis of vegetable oils. 相似文献

TheSolenopsis invicta trail pheromone is synthesized by the Dufour's gland and is released through the sting apparatus. The recruitment subcategory of theS. invicta trail pheromone was shown to be composed of a mixture of the orientation pheromone, (Z,E)--farnesene and an unidentified homosesquiterpene consisting of three rings and one double bond (C-1). The effect of elemental sulfur (S8) and tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) on the chemical crosslinking of PVC is studied. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and gel content of crosslinked and uncrosslinked PVC molded samples, cured at different times in hot air, are evaluated. It was found that crosslinking PVC with TMTD improves its mechanical properties, and adding S8 produces a slight improvement. Also, the S8 presence accelerated the PVC/TMTD crosslinking reaction when the crosslinking reaction was carried out under shear forces, but not when the curing was done in hot air, where the S8 retards the process. 相似文献

Li metal anode is the “Holy Grail” material of advanced Lithium-ion-batteries (LIBs). However, it is plagued by uncontrollable dendrite growth resulting in poor cycling efficiency and short-circuiting of batteries. This has spurred a plethora of research to understand the underlying mechanism of dendrite formation. While experimental studies suggest that there are complex physical and chemical interactions between heterogeneous solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite growth, most of the studies do not reveal the mechanisms triggering these interactions. To deal with this knowledge gap, we propose a multiscale modeling framework which couples kinetic Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations. Specifically, the model has been developed to account for (a) heterogeneous SEI, (b) dendrite-SEI interactions, and (c) effect of electrolyte on Li electrodeposition and potential dendrite formation.
