Chain matching between hydrocarbon and fatty acid as interfacial phenomena

According to the investigations of Cameron and his coworkers^1–5 into the chain-matching phenomena between normal paraffin as a solvent and straight-chain fatty acid as an additive, the optimum condition in boundary lubrication is attained when the chain lengths of the additive and solvent are equal. A series of experiments has been conducted over the past ten years on the role of the chain-matching effect, not only on boundary lubrication but also widely on relevant interfacial phenomena. The results of the investigations are discussed.     

Cytoskeletal Protein 4.1G Is Essential for the Primary Ciliogenesis and Osteoblast Differentiation in Bone Formation

The primary cilium is a hair-like immotile organelle with specific membrane receptors, including the receptor of Hedgehog signaling, smoothened. The cilium organized in preosteoblasts promotes differentiation of the cells into osteoblasts (osteoblast differentiation) by mediating Hedgehog signaling to achieve bone formation. Notably, 4.1G is a plasma membrane-associated cytoskeletal protein that plays essential roles in various tissues, including the peripheral nervous system, testis, and retina. However, its function in the bone remains unexplored. In this study, we identified 4.1G expression in the bone. We found that, in the 4.1G-knockout mice, calcium deposits and primary cilium formation were suppressed in the trabecular bone, which is preosteoblast-rich region of the newborn tibia, indicating that 4.1G is a prerequisite for osteoblast differentiation by organizing the primary cilia in preosteoblasts. Next, we found that the primary cilium was elongated in the differentiating mouse preosteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1, whereas the knockdown of 4.1G suppressed its elongation. Moreover, 4.1G-knockdown suppressed the induction of the cilia-mediated Hedgehog signaling and subsequent osteoblast differentiation. These results demonstrate a new regulatory mechanism of 4.1G in bone formation that promotes the primary ciliogenesis in the differentiating preosteoblasts and induction of cilia-mediated osteoblast differentiation, resulting in bone formation at the newborn stage.     

Vapor generation model for flashing in the initial blowdown phase

A vapor generation model for flashing in the initial blowdown phase is proposed based on a wall nucleation theory and a bubble transport model. Comparisons are made between the proposed model and the TRAC-PF1 model by using the MINCS code through analyses of three blowdown experiments with different scales. The present model well predicts the pressure undershoot in the vessel, while the TRAC model can not predict this typical thermodynamic nonequilibrium phenomenon.     

Histidine 210 mutant of a trypsin-type Achromobacter protease I shows broad optimum pH range

Achromobacter protease I (API), a lysine-specific serine protease, shows one order of magnitude higher activity than bovine trypsin, while its optimum pH is in the alkaline region at about pH 9. To improve the optimum pH range, mutant enzyme His 210 replaced by Ser(H210S), Ala (H210A), and Lys (H210K) were constructed. The optimum pH of H210S shifted from about pH 9 (wild-type enzyme) to about pH 7, retaining its high activity. The putative electrostatic interaction between His 210 and catalytic Asp 113 was elucidated by the optimum-pH shift of H210K and H210A. These results indicate that this unconserved His 210 in API, which plays a key role in generating the useful peptidase, broadened the optimum-pH range without decreasing lysylendo-peptidase activity.     

Performance Evaluation of Magnetostrictive Small Wind Turbines Using Fe–Co Alloy–Based Clad Sheets

In this study, the Fe–Co alloy is combined with cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) and nickel (Ni) to form Fe–Co/CoFe₂O₄ and Fe–Co/Ni clad sheets and their energy-harvesting performance is evaluated. The Fe–Co/CoFe₂O₄ clad sheet exhibits an output voltage of 4.229 mV and an output power of 6.89 nW at a wind speed of 10 m s⁻¹. The energy-harvesting performance of both these clad sheets cannot be quantitatively compared owing to their different thicknesses, which result in varying volume and distance from the neutral plane. Nevertheless, the values of output voltage and power for Fe–Co/CoFe₂O₄ are higher than those for Fe–Co/Ni (2.107 mV and 0.294 nW).     

Dural caroticocavernous fistula with both ophthalmic arteries arising from middle meningeal arteries

A 60-year-old woman presented with a dural caroticocavernous fistula (CCF) in whom both by ophthalmic arteries arose from the middle meningeal arteries instead of from the internal carotid arteries. Transarterial embolisation of the CCF was contraindicated because of the risk of blindness. Transvenous coil embolisation was therefore performed. Bilateral origin of the ophthalmic artery from the middle meningeal artery is extremely rare.     

Effects of antiarrhythmic agents and Mg2+ on aconitine-induced arrhythmias

The effects of antiarrhythmic agents, including Classes I and IV and 3-10 mM Mg2+ on aconitine-induced arrhythmias were examined using a conventional microelectrode and patch clamp method in Langendorff-perfused rabbit hearts and isolated guinea-pig ventricular myocytes. Intracoronary application of 0.1 microM aconitine induced polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (PVT) which continued for more than 60 minutes. Application of aconitine to ventricular myocytes caused a prolonged action potential duration (APD) and the appearance of early afterdepolarization (EAD) together with the occurrence of an inward hump of the I-V curve around -60 to -40 mV and increased outward current at positive voltages. Application of 10 microM TTX and 5 mM or higher Mg2+ restored aconitine-induced PVT to sinus rhythm in Langendorff-perfused preparations and also shortened the prolonged APD, demonstrating the abolishment of EAD by aconitine in ventricular myocytes. However, antiarrhythmic agents did not exert such effects. In conclusion, the antiarrhythmic actions of Mg2+ and TTX in aconitine-induced arrhythmia are to abolish EAD and shorten the prolonged APD by suppression of the inward Na+ current around -60 to -40 mV.     

Effects of cytogenin on spontaneous arthritis in MRL/1 mice and on pristane-induced arthritis (PIA) in DBA/1J mice

Cytogenin, 8-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-6-methoxyisocoumarin, has low cytotoxicity on murine and human tumour cells in vitro. It augments or suppresses phagocytosis of macrophages and lymphocyte proliferation. It has been reported that cytogenin has a potent inhibitory effect clinically on adjuvant arthritis in Lewis rats and on type II collagen-induced arthritis in DBA/1J mice. Our experimental findings provide evidence that cytogenin has beneficial effects on spontaneous polyarthritis in MRL/1 mice and pristane-induced arthritis in DBA/1J mice. The results suggest that the mode of the anti-arthritic action of cytogenin is different from those of NSAIDs; although the precise mode of action remains unclear, cytogenin may become an excellent therapeutic agent for rheumatoid arthritis.     

Malignant lymphoma of the testis: report of two cases

Two cases on non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma (NHL) of the testis are reported. A 63-year-old man with left painless scrotal swelling underwent orchiectomy. Although prophylactic irradiation was performed under the diagnosis of seminoma, subsequent immunohistochemistry revealed NHL, large diffuse cell type (B type). He had stage IEA disease. Chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, adriamycin vincristine and prednisolone was performed. The second case was in a 63-year old man with right painless scrotal swelling. Orchiectomy revealed NHL, diffuse medium cell type (B type). Because of tumor in the retrosternum, he had stage IIIEA disease. Chemotherapy and irradiation to the contralateral testis was performed.
