TiNi shape memory alloys prepared by normal sintering

This paper covers the use of conventional press and sinter of titanium and nickel equiatomic blends, involving transient liquid phases. A notable development has been the fabrication of homogeneous compacts from the elemental powders. Results indicate that employment of a double-stage sintering cycle is effective to sustain the geometrical integrity of the sintered sample. The TiNi alloy prepared in this manner exhibits a recovery strain of 4.6% by generating a restoring stress of 230 MPa, with a martensitic transformation point M_s of 34 °C.     

Vapor pressures of Y,Ba, Cu precursors for the growth of YBa2Cu3O7 by MOVPE

The vapor pressures of theβ-diketonates Y(THD), Ba(THD), and Cu(THD), commonly used as precursors for MOVPE of YBa₂Cu₃O₇, and Y(MCP) were measured at different temperatures. A time-resolved static method recording the pressure vs. time at constant temperature was used, permitting us to deduce the vapor pressure even if the materials tend to decompose. The values of the constants of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation log₁₀p(T)/p ₀=A-B/T are,A=11.7, 8.7, 8.27, 16.6 andB=4359, 2654, 3602, and 6453 K for Y(THD), Y(MCP), Ba(THD), and Cu(THD), respectively withp ₀= 1 Pa and temperatureT in K. The thermal stability of the sources was measured and are discussed.     

Headspace methods for volatile components of cocoa butter

The suitability of dynamic headspace (DHS) method for isolating the volatile components of cocoa butter for subsequent GC analysis was evaluated. Volatile trapping followed by solvent or thermal desorption was performed with different adsorbent traps. DHS analysis by thermal desorption performed with Porapak Q showed the best results in terms of reproducibility and recovery of volatiles.     

Discriminating age-associated memory impairment from Alzheimer's disease.

The authors attempt to provide a better understanding of the differences between the normal memory decline characteristic of age-associated memory impairment (AAMI) and the pathological decline typical of mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Batteries of traditional memory tests and computer-simulated everyday-memory tests discriminated between the 2 groups, which were matched on age, gender, and education, with reasonable degrees of accuracy (87.5% and 88.4%, respectively). False positives were the most frequent classification errors when using either battery. These results indicate that it is possible to use ecologically valid memory assessment paradigms without sacrificing discriminant validity.
