Removal of radiocobalt in waste water by activated charcoal using oxine as a chelating agent

The characteristics of the adsorption of Co ion in water on activated charcoal impregnated with oxine have been studied. Impregnation of oxine largely improved the adsorption capacity of activated charcoal (AC), although the apparent initial and final adsorption rates are not influenced. Another important advantage of AC impregnated with oxine [AC(HOx)] over plain AC is that Co ion collected on AC(HOx) is not easily eluted by flowing water. Furthermore the collection of Co on AC (Hox) is not affected by the presence of Fe(III), which exists in a macroscopic amount in waste water. At the initial adsorption stage, the apparent adsorption rate of Co ion on AC (HOx) is roughly proportional to 0.91 power of the concentration of Co ion.     

Estimation of intrinsic birefringence of poly(ethylene terephthalate) crystal

The intrinsic birefringence of poly(ethylene terephthalate) crystal has been estimated by means of the Orito method using experimental data and using theoretical calculation. The experimental estimation was performed on the basis of the assumption of a two-phase model consisting of crystalline and amorphous phases and the additivity of birefringence contributions — that total birefringence is equal to the sum of the orientation contributions from crystalline and amorphous phases, and of form birefringence. The value experimentally extrapolated by the Orito method is approx. 0.24. On the other hand, the theoretical calculation was carried out in the usual way using the values of bond polarizabilities according to Bunn and the atomic arrangements within the crystal according to Daubeny et al. The calculated value is 0.251. The difference between two results is also discussed.

Triethylamine-sensitized photopolymerization of styrene

The photopolymerization of styrene in cyclohexane was accelerated by addition of triethylamine. The determination of the degree of polymerization of the polymer formed showed the acceleration was due to a concurrent sensitized initiation. Further kinetic studies revealed that the sensitization mechanism was analogous to that of the methyl methacrylate case reported earlier, in which an excited monomer and an amine formed an exciplex and gave an initiating radical species. The fluorescence of styrene was quenched effectively by addition of triethylamine in accordance with the kinetic argument.     

Isolation of cerebroside containing glucose (Glucosyl ceramide) and its possible significance in ganglioside synthesis

A small amount of cerebroside containing glucose (glucosyl ceramide) was isolated from bovine brain by Florisil column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. The fatty acids of the glucosyl ceramide were palmitic and stearic acids; small amounts of oleic and linoleic acids were present. Rat brain tissue slices, incubated with U-¹⁴C-glucose, incorporated more radioacivity into glucosyl ceramide than into galactosyl ceramide. From these results the possible metabolic significance of the brain glucosyl ceramide in ganglioside metabolism is discussed.
