Works of adhesion at the carbon fiber-liquid interface determined using a modified wetting technique

Works of adhesion W_SL between aqueous solutions with pH values in the range from 1 to 14 and carbon fibers from different sources, which were additionally treated in an inert atmosphere or in oxygen, were measured by use of a microbalance. These works of adhesion W_SL were found to show distinct stepwise dependencies on the pH value. The works of adhesion W_SL are attributed to dispersion interactions W_SL¹ and various acid-base interactions w_sl^ab—in the latter case between the acidic and basic surface groups of carbon and the various basic and acidic aqueous solutions.     

Modified CIELAB formula tested using a textile pass/fail data set

The proposed new color-difference formula of CIE TC 129, which is a modified version of CIELAB, was tested with a recently published data set of textile pass/fail judgments. Goodness of fit is improved, if the parameter of lightness is set near 2, and if, additionally, a weight function for lightness is defined that reduces the weight of a lightness difference with lightness level in relation to chroma or hue scaling. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Effects of task difficulty, goal setting, and strategy on performance of a heuristic task.

Investigated the relative contribution of goal setting and task difficulty to performance on a heuristic computer task with 128 undergraduates who attempted to solve either easy or difficult maze puzzles. Each S was assigned either an easy, moderate, or difficult goal or told to do his/her best. One month prior to the experiment, Ss responded to the Neuroticism scale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory to collect data on arousal. Data were also collected on acceptance, commitment, task complexity, and performance. Results show that both goals and task difficulty affected task performance, arousal, and perceptions of task complexity. A linear, rather than curvilinear, relationship was found between task arousal and performance. Contrary to prior research by G. A. Bassett (see record 1980-33518-001), results also show that, when the task was difficult, the setting of a difficult goal led to significantly lower performance. The decrease in performance in the difficult goal condition was attributed to the variation in performance strategy employed by these Ss as opposed to other Ss. It is argued that the setting of difficult goals may not be an effective motivational strategy when a heuristic, rather than algorithmic, solution is needed. Combined use of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) and papillotomy (ERCP) in management of cholecysto-choledocholithiasis

In a review of 328 cases the combination of laparoscopic cholecystectomy with specific use of endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (pre- and postoperatively) proved to be a riskless, secure and time-saving procedure. In our opinion this is a minimal invasive method of treatment for patients with cholecysto-/choledocholithiasis.     

Vollständige Beschreibung der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurven mit Hooke-Gerade,Fließhorizontale und Verfestigungsklothoide

Es werden die experimentellen und numerischen Ergebnisse dargelegt, um die gesamte Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurve des Zugversuches mit sechs Kennwerten zu beschreiben. Dies sind: Elastizitätsmodul, Streckgrenze, Fließdehnung, Zugfestigkeit, Gleichmaßdehnung und Verfestigungsmodul. Dadurch werden auch im überelastischen Bereich numerische Beziehungen möglich zwischen: Verformungen und Spannungen, Dehngrenzen, Tangenten-Modulen und Arbeitsvermögen. Die Beziehungen erweitern die Ermittlung von Last- und Eigenspannungen, und die Berechnungen beim plastischen Umformen, beim Traglastverfahren und beim Messen von Kerbspannungen.
