Antitumor Mechanisms of Amino Acid Hydroxyurea Derivatives in the Metastatic Colon Cancer Model

The paper presents a detailed study of the biological effects of two amino acid hydroxyurea derivatives that showed selective antiproliferative effects in vitro on the growth of human tumor cell line SW620. Tested compounds induced cell cycle perturbations and apoptosis. Proteins were identified by proteomics analyses using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry, which provided a complete insight into the most probable mechanism of action on the protein level. Molecular targets for tested compounds were analyzed by cheminformatics tools. Zinc-dependent histone deacetylases were identified as potential targets responsible for the observed antiproliferative effect.     

Lead, cadmium, iron, copper and zinc in fresh milk from the selected areas of the Cracow region

The aim of the experiments was to determine some metals in fresh milk. The content of lead and cadmium in cow's milk from 4 dairy centres situated in various distances from the iron and steel works "Lenin" in Nowa Huta, a part of Cracow, was about ten times bigger than in milk from the control region (an agricultural area far from industrial influences). In many cases milk contains the upper admissible limit of lead and is questionable from the point of view of toxicology.     

Analysis of the Annealing Budget of Metal Oxide Thin-Film Transistors Prepared by an Aqueous Blade-Coating Process

Metal oxide (MO) semiconductors are widely used in electronic devices due to their high optical transmittance and promising electrical performance. This work describes the advancement toward an eco-friendly, streamlined method for preparing thin-film transistors (TFTs) via a pure water-solution blade-coating process with focus on a low thermal budget. Low temperature and rapid annealing of triple-coated indium oxide thin-film transistors (3C-TFTs) and indium oxide/zinc oxide/indium oxide thin-film transistors (IZI-TFTs) on a 300 nm SiO₂ gate dielectric at 300 °C for only 60 s yields devices with an average field effect mobility of 10.7 and 13.8 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹, respectively. The devices show an excellent on/off ratio (>10⁶), and a threshold voltage close to 0 V when measured in air. Flexible MO-TFTs on polyimide substrates with AlO_x dielectrics fabricated by rapid annealing treatment can achieve a remarkable mobility of over 10 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹ at low operating voltage. When using a longer post-coating annealing period of 20 min, high-performance 3C-TFTs (over 18 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹) and IZI-TFTs (over 38 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹) using MO semiconductor layers annealed at 300 °C are achieved.     

A Method for Estimating the Efficiency of Commanding in the State Fire Service of Poland

A rough method for estimating commanding efficiency of Fire&Rescue officers is presented in the article. The idea is to evaluate the officers in charge and their actions based on the information collected in the incident data reporting system. The criteria for the commanding evaluation is the distribution of durations of the actions conducted by consecutive commanders.     

Croatian scholarly productivity 1991–2005 measured by journals indexed in Web of Science

The purpose of the research was to establish and inform about the features of productivity across all scholarly fields measured through journals indexed in WoS in which Croatian authors working in Croatian institutions published since independence (1991) to 2005. Total 19,929 papers in 2,946 journals were found. Of these, 17,875 papers were published in 2,690 science, technology and medicine (STM) journals, 1,869 papers were published in 178 social science journals, and 185 were published in 78 A&H journals according to custom classification used in the research. Special attention was given to publishing features of specific scholarly fields. The number of different journals in which the papers were published per year has doubled in the period (from 404 in 1991 to 894 in 2005). To support additional insight, a distinction between national and international journals was made and top 10% journals according to JCR 2005 categories were identified by IF. National journals accounted for 15.9% of STM papers, 77.6% of social science papers and 25.9% of A&H papers. Top 10% journals accounted for a total of 368 journals and 2,336 papers with significant variations across the subfields.

For the approximate quadrature of improper integrals over the real axis for analytic functions quadrature formulae with an infinite number of equidistant nodes are considered. In a Hardy space the L₁-norm of the error of the trapezoidal rule is evaluated and, furthermore, a quadrature formula with minimal error norm is given.

The growth of Rhodotorula rubra yeasts and their synthesis of ergosterol on media with lovastatin

The effect of lovastatin, a competing inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA-reductase (HMG-CoA-reductase) of the fungal origin on the growth of and ergosterol biosynthesis by Rh. rubra VKPM Y 1337 was studied. It was shown that the yeast growth was inhibited by lovastatin in concentrations of 0.25 to 5.0 micrograms/ml when the inhibitor was added to the cultivation medium either with the inoculum or at later periods of the yeast cultivation. In concentrations of 2.0 to 5.0 micrograms/ml lovastatin almost completely inhibited the yeast growth. In the concentrations tested the inhibitor did not decrease the ergosterol level in the yeast cells below 40 per cent of the control. When lovastatin was added in concentrations of 1.0 to 5.0 micrograms/ml the maximum inhibition of the ergosterol biosynthesis was observed at the end of the growth log phase. Further cultivation of the yeast in the presence of the inhibitor resulted in an increase of the ergosterol biosynthesis. It is believed that the increase in the quantity of ergosterol may be due either to the HMG-CoA-reductase induction under the action of the inhibitor or to its inactivation as a result of the hydroxylation.
