Image processing based on seeded spontaneous optical pattern formation by optoelectronic feedback

Spontaneous optical pattern formation from an initial seed optical pattern in an optoelectronic system with optical diffractive feedback is investigated experimentally. We demonstrate that the temporal evolution of the spontaneously formed patterns exhibits a contrast enhancement effect, a spatial filtering effect, and filling of vacant space while the surrounding structures are maintained. These effects allow us to perform image processing of natural fringe patterns, i.e., in our experiments, fingerprint patterns. We also demonstrate image processing with defect invariance for fingerprint patterns.     

DNA and chemical analyses of commercial fly agaric-related products

Since June 6, 2002, psilocin and psilocybin-containing fungi (commonly called "magic mushrooms") have been regulated by the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law in Japan. However, various fly agaric-related products are now entering the Japanese market via the internet. In this study, fly agaric-related products available in this way were investigated for raw materials by DNA analysis and for additives by chemical analysis. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the mitochondrial 12S rDNA region suggested that these fly agaric-related products originate from A. muscaria or A. muscaria var. persicina. Furthermore, they were classified into three strains based on the ITS2-LSU nucleotide sequence. Harmine derivatives and/or tryptamine derivatives were detected in some of these products by LC/MS analysis. In accordance with this, the matK gene of Peganum harmala was found in all of the harmine derivative-containing samples.     

Estimation of heat evolution during viscoelastic crack propagation by liquid crystal film technique

Heat generated during dynamic crack propagation in viscoelastic solids was investigated by visible liquid crystal film technique to observe the thermal boundary front emanating from a running crack tip. The crack propagation velocity was also measured by the velocity gauge method. The heat so estimated is correlated with the crack propagation velocity.     

Transient induced creep for irradiated fuels

Creep of nuclear fuels under irradiation has generally been considered as an athermal process. A transient state of irradiation induced creep, however, was treated with kinetic equations based on thermodynamics. For this purpose, the kinetic equations for enhanced diffusion, annihilation of excess vacancies and migration probability under irradiation were derived. Effective works were introduced to the above processes as a result of the fission damage, and reduced activation energies for each process were defined. Based on the knowledge obtained in the transient state, the effective activation energies in the steady state were discussed. The above concepts were examined using the experiments of Clough.     

Boiling two-phase flow under microgravity

To study the effects of reduced gravity on the flow regime and the heat transfer characteristics of a boiling two-phase horizontal flow, parabolic flight experiments were performed by using an aircraft. The gravity level during the parabolic flight and the duration time were about −0.01g_e +0.01g_e and 20 s, respectively. Under earth gravity, many small bubbles are detached very frequently from the heater rod surface, flowing into the upper stream due to the buoyancy and resulting in a stratified flow in the cases of lower inlet fluid velocity and higher heat flux. Under microgravity conditions, bubbles are hardly detached from the heater rod, growing and coalescing to become much larger along the heater rod, surrounding the heater rod in the downstream. This tendency was more noticeable in the cases of lower inlet fluid velocity, higher heat flux and lower inlet fluid subcooling. The local heat transfer coefficients at the bottom of the heater rod tend to decrease slightly under microgravity compared with those under earth gravity because of the reduction of the heat removal due to natural convection. On the other hand, the local heat transfer coefficients at the top of the heater rod tend to increase slightly under microgravity. However, the differences of the local heat transfer coefficients are very small in spite of large differences of the flow regimes under earth gravity and microgravity.     

Plasma amino acid profile in relation to arterial ketone body ratio in surgical patients

A total of 357 plasma amino acid profiles from 93 surgical patients were statistically analyzed in relation to the changes in arterial ketone body ratio, which reflects the hepatic mitochondrial redox state. When the arterial ketone body ratio was above 0.7, all plasma amino acid levels were within the normal range. When it was between 0.7 and 0.4, plasma levels of aspartate, glutamate, valine, isoleucine, leucine, ornithine, and arginine decreased, and plasma levels of tyrosine, phenylalanine, proline, and methionine increased. Furthermore, when it was below 0.4, almost all plasma amino acids markedly increased. These results indicate that arterial ketone body ratio accurately reflects the alterations in plasma amino acid profile, and can serve as an indicator for providing nutritional support by amino acid supplement in surgical patients.     

Stable and Metastable Phase Relationships in the System ZrO2–ErO1.5

Stable and metastable phase relationships in the system ZrO₂–ErO_1.5 were investigated using homogeneous samples prepared by rapid quenching of melts and by arc melting. The rapidly quenched samples were annealed in air for 48 h at 1690°C or for 8 months at 1315°C. Two tetragonal phases ( t - and t '-phases) were observed after quenching samples heated at 1690°C to a room temperature, whereas one t -phase and cubic ( c -) phase were found in those treated at 1315°C. Since the t '-phase is obtained through a diffusionless transformation during cooling from a high-temperature c -phase, t - and c -phases can coexist at high temperature. The t - and c -phases field spans from 4 to 10 mol% ErO_1.5 at 1690°C and from 3 to 15 mol% ErO_1.5 at 1315°C. The equilibrium temperature T ^t-m ₀ between the t - and monoclinic ( m -) phases estimated from A_s and M_s temperatures decreased with increasing ErO_1.5 contents.     

Synthesis of Sintered Diamond with High Electrical Resistivity and Hardness

Diamond and diamond-ultrafine Co powder mixtures were sintered at 7.7 GPa and 1800° to 2000°C. A well-sintered body with a fine-grained homogeneous microstructure, high hardness, and high electrical resistivity was produced when a diamond-5 vol% Co powder mixture was used as the starting material.
