Slurry transportation is an economic haulage system in oil sands and coal-mining operations characterized by long haulage distances and rugged terrain. In such conditions, the ton-km-hr limits are exceeded creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. Steep haul grades and rugged terrain also cause mechanical wear and tear, which decrease haulage equipment economic life. Hydraulic transportation is a proven and viable technology for slurry transportation in such conditions. Currently, stationary pipeline transportation is being used in transporting minerals in many mines. There is an increasing demand to create slurrified minerals at the mining faces to be transported to the processing plant. However, stationary pipelines are not capable for dealing with the rapidly changing configuration of the mining faces. In this paper, the authors develop the ground articulating pipeline (GAP) technology to address this problem. The GAP system consists of pipelines connected together with flexible joints in each pipe section, which allows deflection to avoid torsional stresses from the adjoining frames. This flexible arrangement accommodates the horizontal and vertical displacements of the mobile system as it follows the hydraulic shovels in the excavation process. The mechanics of the GAP system, as well as the production–economic function, are formulated and simulated over an extended period using data and information from Syncrude’s North Mine. The results show that the GAP system is technically and economically viable for productivity between 6,300 and 6,500 tons per hour. The simulated head loss for the GAP system is 15.66 m per 400 m, which compares with 20 m per 400 m for the existing stationary system at Syncrude. The pressure gradient-radius curves are asymptotic to the pipe boundaries, which indicates steep axial pressure gradient in these areas. 相似文献

Soil organic carbon changes in the cultivation of energy crops: Implications for GHG balances and soil quality for use in LCA 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The environmental impact of different land-use systems for energy, up to the farm or forest “gate”, has been quantified with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Four representative crops are considered: OilSeed Rape (OSR), Miscanthus, Short-Rotation Coppice (SRC) willow and forest residues. The focus of the LCA is on changes in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) but energy use, emissions of GreenHouse Gases (GHGs), acidification and eutrophication are also considered. In addition to providing an indicator of soil quality, changes in SOC are shown to have a dominant effect on total GHG emissions. Miscanthus is the best land-use option for GHG emissions and soil quality as it sequesters C at a higher rate than the other crops, but this has to be weighed against other environmental impacts where Miscanthus performs worse, such as acidification and eutrophication. OSR shows the worst performance across all categories. Because forest residues are treated as a by-product, their environmental impacts are small in all categories. The analysis highlights the need for detailed site-specific modelling of SOC changes, and for consequential LCAs of the whole fuel cycle including transport and use. 相似文献

This study presents a planning model for Swedish activities in the field of wind power. Models and results of calculations of the land-based wind energy potential with the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Programme, WAsP, are described and analysed in a geographical information systems (GIS) called the ArcView® GIS system. One county in southern Sweden was chosen as a case study to present the methods used. The results from that case study indicate a great wind energy potential but there are nevertheless many factors limiting that potential. The study calls for a further development of planning tools in the field. Important areas for the future are the development of knowledge in market issues, wind power technology, environmental issues, and public opinion on constructing wind turbines. 相似文献

We investigated CH4 oxidation in the water column of Lake Kivu, a deep meromictic tropical lake with CH4-rich anoxic deep waters. Depth profiles of dissolved gases (CH4 and N2O) and a diversity of potential electron acceptors for anaerobic CH4 oxidation (NO3?, SO42?, Fe and Mn oxides) were determined during six field campaigns between June 2011 and August 2014. Denitrification measurements based on stable isotope labelling experiments were performed twice. In addition, we quantified aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation, NO3? and SO42? consumption rates, with and without the presence of an inhibitor of SO42?-reducing bacteria activity. Aerobic CH4 production was also measured in parallel incubations with the addition of an inhibitor of aerobic CH4 oxidation. The maximum aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation rates were estimated to be 27?±?2 and 16?±?8?μmol/L/d, respectively. We observed a difference in the relative importance of aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation during the rainy and the dry season, with a greater role for aerobic oxidation during the dry season. Lower anaerobic CH4 oxidation rates were measured in presence of molybdate in half of the measurements, suggesting the occurrence of linkage between SO42? reduction and anaerobic CH4 oxidation. NO3? consumption and dissolved Mn production rates were never high enough to sustain the measured anaerobic CH4 oxidation, reinforcing the idea of a coupling between SO42? reduction and CH4 oxidation in the anoxic waters of Lake Kivu. This paper presents an experimental study of catalytic hydrogen combustion that used commercial catalysts containing Pt in a honeycomb monolith reactor in a plug flow configuration. The emphasis is on determining global kinetics in the case of low hydrogen content. Measurements of the temperature and composition of the reaction product at the outlet in the steady state condition at the different initial compositions of hydrogen and total volumetric feed rates were performed. The conversion of hydrogen was determined in parallel to the composition of the reaction product at the outlet using GC as well as by means of the thermodynamic approach using material and energy balances. The influence of the flow rate and initial molar fraction of hydrogen on hydrogen conversion is shown. A kinetic expression of the Arrhenius type is proposed with the reaction first order in hydrogen and zero order in oxygen for the overall process of the oxidation of hydrogen in lean hydrogen-air mixtures. The determined activation energy was in good agreement with the desorption activation energy for O2 from graphene-covered Pt(111) surfaces using temperature-programmed desorption. This result shows transport-limitations for heterogeneous hydrogen conversion in catalytic hydrogen combustion. 相似文献

We consider large-scale dynamical systems in which both the initial state and some parameters are unknown. These unknown quantities must be estimated from partial state observations over a time window. A data assimilation framework is applied for this purpose. Specifically, we focus on large-scale linear systems with multiplicative parameter-state coupling as they arise in the discretization of parametric linear time-dependent partial differential equations. Another feature of our work is the presence of a quantity of interest different from the unknown parameters, which is to be estimated based on the available data. In this setting, we employ a simplicial decomposition algorithm for an optimal sensor placement and set forth formulae for the efficient evaluation of all required quantities. As a guiding example, we consider a thermo-mechanical PDE system with the temperature constituting the system state and the induced displacement at a certain reference point as the quantity of interest. 相似文献

Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) has evolved as a promising therapeutic target for cancer treatment, especially in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). To approach the challenge of site-specific LSD1 inhibition, we developed an enzyme-prodrug system with the bacterial nitroreductase NfsB (NTR) that was expressed in the virally transfected AML cell line THP1-NTR+. The cellular activity of the NTR was proven with a new luminescent NTR probe. We synthesised a diverse set of nitroaromatic prodrugs that by design do not affect LSD1 and are reduced by the NTR to release an active LSD1 inhibitor. The emerging side products were differentially analysed using negative controls, thereby revealing cytotoxic effects. The 2-nitroimidazolyl prodrug of a potent LSD1 inhibitor emerged as one of the best prodrug candidates with a pronounced selectivity window between wild-type and transfected THP1 cells. Our prodrugs are selectively activated and release the LSD1 inhibitor locally, proving their suitability for future targeting approaches. 相似文献

Thermogravimetric analysis of a coccolith-containing biogenic broth showed a three-step degradation process. According to this system behavior, the biogenic broth was heated to specific temperatures and characterized in terms of its morphology, surface chemistry, and crystallinity. The elemental and organic composition of the treated samples was also evaluated and compared to the reference material. We present a multidisciplinary design optimization method for the profile and structural reinforcement layout of a ram‐air kite rib. The aim is to minimize the structural elastic energy and to maximize the traction power of a ram‐air kite used for airborne wind energy generation. Because of the large deformations occurring during flight, a fluid‐structure interaction (FSI) routine is included in the optimization, which determines the actual deformed rib geometry and its corresponding aerodynamic characteristics. A qualitative comparison between FSI inclusion and exclusion in the optimization is given. Discrepancies in airfoil profile and structural layout are observed. 相似文献
