Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) constitute a novel power generation technology that converts organic waste to electrical energy using microbially catalyzed electrochemical reactions. Since the power output of MFCs changes considerably with varying operating conditions, the online optimization of electrical load (i.e., external resistance) is extremely important for maintaining a stable MFC performance. The application of several real‐time optimization methods is presented, such as the perturbation and observation method, the gradient method, and the recently proposed multiunit method, for maximizing power output of MFCs by varying the external resistance. Experiments were carried out in two similar MFCs fed with acetate. Variations in substrate concentration and temperature were introduced to study the performance of each optimization method in the face of disturbances unknown to the algorithms. Zinc (Zn), the second-most necessary trace element, is abundant in the human body. The human body lacks the capacity to store Zn; hence, the dietary intake of Zn is essential for various functions and metabolism. The uptake of Zn during its transport through the body is important for proper development of the three major accessory sex glands: the testis, epididymis, and prostate. It plays key roles in the initial stages of germ cell development and spermatogenesis, sperm cell development and maturation, ejaculation, liquefaction, the binding of spermatozoa and prostasomes, capacitation, and fertilization. The prostate releases more Zn into the seminal plasma during ejaculation, and it plays a significant role in sperm release and motility. During the maternal, labor, perinatal, and neonatal periods, the part of Zn is vital. The average dietary intake of Zn is in the range of 8–12 mg/day in developing countries during the maternal period. Globally, the dietary intake of Zn varies for pregnant and lactating mothers, but the average Zn intake is in the range of 9.6–11.2 mg/day. The absence of Zn and the consequences of this have been discussed using critical evidence. The events and functions of Zn related to successful fertilization have been summarized in detail. Briefly, our current review emphasizes the role of Zn at each stage of human reproduction, from the spermatogenesis process to childbirth. Increasing urbanization changes runoff patterns to be flashy and instantaneous with decreased base flow. A model with the
ability to simulate sub-daily rainfall–runoff processes and continuous simulation capability is required to realistically
capture the long-term flow and water quality trends in watersheds that are experiencing urbanization. Soil and Water Assessment
Tool (SWAT) has been widely used in hydrologic and nonpoint sources modeling. However, its subdaily modeling capability is
limited to hourly flow simulation. This paper presents the development and testing of a sub-hourly rainfall–runoff model in
SWAT. SWAT algorithms for infiltration, surface runoff, flow routing, impoundments, and lagging of surface runoff have been
modified to allow flow simulations with a sub-hourly time interval as small as one minute. Evapotranspiration, soil water
contents, base flow, and lateral flow are estimated on a daily basis and distributed equally for each time step. The sub-hourly
routines were tested on a 1.9 km2 watershed (70% undeveloped) near Lost Creek in Austin Texas USA. Sensitivity analysis shows that channel flow parameters
are more sensitive in sub-hourly simulations (Δt = 15 min) while base flow parameters are more important in daily simulations (Δt = 1 day). A case study shows that the sub-hourly SWAT model reasonably reproduces stream flow hydrograph under multiple storm
events. Calibrated stream flow for 1 year period with 15 min simulation (R
2 = 0.93) shows better performance compared to daily simulation for the same period (R
2 = 0.72). A statistical analysis shows that the improvement in the model performance with sub-hourly time interval is mostly
due to the improvement in predicting high flows. The sub-hourly version of SWAT is a promising tool for hydrology and non-point

The effect of a few common spices--cumin (Cuminum cyminum, cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), ginger (Zingiber officinale), mustard (Brassica nigra) and tamarind (Tamarindus indica)--added to normal and hypercholesterolemia inducing diet on serum and liver cholesterol levels in rats was studied. A detailed regional drought study is carried out in the southern peninsula of India to characterize the spatio-temporal nature of droughts and to predict the drought magnitudes for various probabilities in the homogeneous drought regions. The method of several random initializations of the cluster centres of the K-means algorithm is suggested for the identification of the initial regions in the context of drought regionalization, which is shown to perform better than the initialization from the Ward’s algorithm and the Ward’s algorithm itself. The peninsula is classified into seven spatially well-separated homogeneous drought regions. The robust L-moment framework is used for the regional frequency analysis of drought magnitudes computed using the standardized precipitation index. The Pearson type III is found to be appropriate for regional drought frequency analysis in six of the regions, while the robust Wakeby distribution is suggested for one region. Low magnitude droughts are frequent and dominant in the northern part of west coast, the north-eastern coast and its adjoining inland region, while high magnitude droughts are less in number and are experienced in semi-arid central part, southern part of western coast, south-eastern part and north-western inland region. The spatial maps of drought magnitudes indicate that at higher return periods (100 and 200 years) the south-eastern part of the peninsula is likely to encounter high magnitude droughts, while the central region is likely to experience the same at lower return periods (10 and 50 years). There are various methods to determine the compressive and tensile strength of asphalt concrete under static loading conditions and most studies on asphalt strength and fracture have been conducted under such loading conditions. However, pavement materials also have to withstand a wide variety of loading and temperature conditions which may vary from quasi-static to high-strain rate impact, and pavement breakdown may occur due to fracture and/or fatigue failure. In the present study, a bituminous mix with 30% RAP has been characterized under quasi-static (10?3–10?4 strain/s) and high-strain rate (200–700 strain/s) regimes. The experimental studies have been performed to better understand the compressive, tensile and fracture response of bituminous mixes. Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and its modifications were used for high-strain rate characterization of this bituminous mixture. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the hot mix asphalt (HMA) changed significantly under high-strain rate testing. Also, the failure mechanisms observed under the high-strain rate loading were found to be considerably different from those obtained in static testing, where failure of binder was a predominant mechanism. Sewage and industrial effluent treatment plants are installed with primary and secondary biological treatment units to reduce the discharge of pollution load into the environment. These treatment plants normally reduce the organic load in terms of BOD but not the pollution load in terms of inorganic salts (total dissolved solids—TDS) and colour in the effluent. To eliminate the contamination of ground and surface water bodies and to conserve water sources, the regulatory authorities have taken very stringent regulations to implement zero liquid discharge (ZLD) for industrial effluents, i.e., water recovery from wastewater and reuse. It is difficult to recover water from secondary treated wastewater directly, as it does not meet the reverse osmosis feed requirements. In order to achieve the feed requirements, different tertiary treatment methods are being tried. In this study, removal of colour due to residual dyes has been attempted using ozone. The main purpose of this study is to decolourise the dye used in leather processing. Also, the effect of pH and dye concentration on dye decolourisation has been investigated. From the study it has been observed that maximum decolourisation efficiency up to 97% could be achieved for the pH values (4,7, 9 and 11) and dye concentrations (30, 65, 180 and 360 mg/L) studied. 相似文献
