Transformation of skin from larval to adult types in a salamander, Hynobius retardatus, which had been reported to show neotenic reproduction in a specific environment, was examined morphologically in normally metamorphosing, precociously metamorphosing and metamorphosis-arrested larvae. Typical larval skin was composed of an epidermis constituted by three types of cells such as apical, Leydig, and basal cells. The Leydig cells were larval specific, and thus disappeared and were replaced by adult epidermal cells during the metamorphosis. Disappearance of the Leydig cells was accomplished by apoptosis as confirmed by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end-labeling method and electron microscopy during the normal metamorphosis and precocious metamorphosis induced by exogenously applied triiodothyronine. Typical adult skin was composed of epidermis constituted by stratified squamous cells and of dermis mainly occupied with two types of dermal glands, mucous and serous glands. When the metamorphosis was arrested by different procedures (thyroidectomy, hypophysectomy, goitrogen treatment, and rearing at low temperature), the larval-specific Leydig cells fully remained in the epidermis, suggesting that the disappearance of these depended on the thyroid activity. Contrary to this, dermal glands behaved differently from the Leydig cells, though they developed and differentiated from epidermal basal cells and constituted the same skin. Those in the metamorphosis-arrested (thyroidectomized, hypophysectomized, or goitrogen-treated) larvae, except in the larvae reared at 4 degrees C, appeared a little later than in the controls. Thus, the aged, metamorphosis-arrested larvae had skin which consisted of larval type epidermis (Leydig cells) and adult type dermis (mucous and serous glands).  相似文献

Molecular transport through nanoscale pores in films, membranes and wall structures is of fundamental importance in a number of physical, chemical and biological processes. However, there is a lack of experimental methods that can obtain information on the structure and orientation of the molecules as they pass through the pore, and their interactions with the pore during passage. Imaging with a transmission electron microscope is a powerful method for studying structural changes in single molecules as they move and for imaging molecules confined inside carbon nanotubes. Here, we report that such imaging can be used to observe the structure and orientation of a hydrocarbon chain as it passes through nanoscale defects in the walls of a single-walled carbon nanotube to the vacuum outside, and also to study the interactions between the chain and the nanopore. Based on experiments at 293 K and 4 K we conclude that the major energy source for the molecular motions observed at 4 K is the electron beam used for the imaging.  相似文献

Vertically stacked layer structure is useful for controlling the size distribution of quantum dots. The dependence of the size distribution of quantum dots on the stacking numbers is theoretically and experimentally investigated. We show that the size distribution of quantum dots decreases with increasing the stacking number, and it occurs drastically when the stacking number is changed from 1 to 2. The quantitative analysis on in-plane strain energy distribution is also performed for the explanation.  相似文献

0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 3% Ce doped scintillation crystals based on NaF-CaF2-LuF3 solid solutions were grown from the melt using Micro-Pulling-Down (μ-PD) method. The grown crystals were transparent and their transmittance was approximately 80% for the wavelengths longer than 320 nm. Concerning the scintillation properties, radio-luminescence peaks of the crystals were detected at approximately 330 nm. The light yield of the crystals was also measured using γ-ray (137Cs and 22Na) as the excitation source.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: To clarify the cerebral hemodynamics in pre-eclamptic pregnant women, we investigated the blood flow velocity of the cerebral arteries. METHODS: The mean blood flow velocity and pulsatility index (PI) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) in normal pregnant women (n = 35) and pre-eclamptic patients (n = 18) were examined transcranially using pulsed-wave Doppler technique with a 2 MHz probe. In two pre-eclamptic women with post-partum visual disturbance, we examined the mean blood flow velocity and PI of the MCA and ICA every day. RESULTS: The mean blood flow velocity of the MCA in the pre-eclamptic patients (89.7 +/- 20.5 cm/s) was significantly higher than that in the normal pregnant women (53.6 +/- 16.9 cm/s) (p < 0.05). PI of the MCA in the former group (0.67 +/- 0.13) was significantly lower than that in the latter (0.78 +/- 0.02) (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between these two groups in these variables of the ICA. In the two patients with visual disturbance, the mean blood flow velocity of the MCA was increased before the onset of visual disturbance and decreased gradually following the disappearance of this symptom. In these patients, spasm of the MCA was confirmed by magnetic resonance angiography. CONCLUSIONS: In pre-eclamptic patients, we found increased MCA mean velocity before the onset of visual disturbance. Transcranial Doppler may be useful for the evaluation of cerebral hemodynamics and the prediction of eclampsia.  相似文献

Vertical ordering in stacked layers of InAs/GaAs quantum dots is currently the focus of scientific research because of its potential for optoelectronics applications. Transmission electron microscopy was applied to study InAs/GaAs stacked layers grown by molecular-beam-epitaxy with various thicknesses of GaAs spacer. Thickness dependencies of quantum dot size and their ordering were observed experimentally and, then, compared with the results of strain calculations based on the finite element method. The vertical ordering did occur when the thickness of the GaAs spacer was comparable with the dot height. The ordering was found to be associated with relatively large InAs dots on the first layer. Quantum dots tend to become larger in size and more regular in plane with increasing numbers of stacks. Our results suggest that the vertical ordering is not only affected by strain from the InAs dots on the lower layer, but by total strain configuration in the multi-stacked structure.  相似文献

With the evolution of digital networks and intelligent network (IN) capabilities, the role of common channel signaling has become more and more important. In respect to IN, common channel signaling would play a significant role not only inside one network but also over multiple networks. International credit card validation and internetworking for digital mobile services represented by GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) are examples which utilize internetwork signaling capabilities in the framework of the initial-phase IN. Enhanced service providers (ESPs) may access the public network through the common channel signaling interface to make use of the IN capabilities, as is being discussed in terms of ONA (open network architecture) or ONP (open network provision). This paper first identifies various scenarios where internetwork signaling interactions would take place in the framework of IN in the forthcoming era. It then identifies various requirements to cope with these scenarios. It finally discusses the directions for evolution of common channel signaling toward global intelligent networking  相似文献
