Nonstationary processes in a controlled electric drive with a high-voltage frequency converter intended for a mainline pump of a heat-supply station

Results of the studies of nonstationary electromagnetic and electromechanical processes that develop during the start-up (restart) of a frequency-controlled electric drive of a mainline pump as result of perturbation in the electric supply system are presented.     

Hydrogen reduction kinetics of electrometallurgical slime

The interaction of hydrogen with the zinc-containing electrometallurgical slime of the Severstal’ metallurgical works has been studied. The sequence of transformations in the slime heated to 1100°C in hydrogen or air has been established. The experimental and calculated weight losses coincide. Some of the carbonates are shown to decompose in the temperature range 300–700°C, and most iron and zinc oxides are reduced to a metal. In the temperature range 650–850°C, zinc is almost completely sublimated. At temperatures above 800°C, complex oxides are reduced and calcium and magnesium carbonates and sulfates are likely to decompose. Experimental digital data on the zinc sublimation rate are processed by the least squares method with approximating equations used in thermal analysis. The kinetics of nonisothermal zinc sublimation is comprehensively analyzed using a unique procedure developed for taking into account the background of a peak and the effect of accompanying processes. An equation for the calculation of the zinc sublimation rate under experimental conditions (fluidized bed) is given and tested.     

External heat transfer in infiltrated granular beds. Experimental study

Experimental data was obtained on external heat transfer in infiltrated granular beds of coarse particles. A dynamic linear programming approach to market allocation of renewable resources in the italian energy system: The case of solar thermal and biogas technologies

In Italy solar thermal energy and energy from biogas are two possible means of reducing dependence on energy imports. Using a multiperiod LP model (MARKAL) the authors assessed the likely potential of both technologies under various circumstances. The study covered the period 1980–2005, in five segments of five years. It focused only on the subsystem of the energy end-uses which can be substituted for by solar thermal and biogas technologies. The overall non-renewable sources which can be saved in 20 years by these technologies total 450 PJ (1 PJ = 10^{1 5} J) if the fuel prices rise at 0 per cent average annual, 1450 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 4.2 per cent average annual, 1860 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 7.2 per cent average annual and 3780 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 15 per cent average annual. However the most competitive technologies appear to be solar water heaters used mainly in the private and commercial sectors and biogas systems used mainly in the agricultural sector. The study was carried out by APRE under ENEA (formerly CNEN) contract and was intended to serve as an analytical basis for establishing an overall development and demonstration strategy for end-use renewable technologies in Italy.     

Organochlorine Contaminants of Wintering Ducks Foraging on Detroit River Sediments

Organochlorine analysis was performed on carcasses of 13 diving ducks from a 1981 wintering population that foraged on contaminated sediments in the lower Detroit River. Mean total PCB concentrations were 10 mg/kg for seven lesser scaups (Aythya affinis), 11 mg/kg for three greater scaups (A. marila), and 7.6 mg/kg for three goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula). Highest mean levels of other residues were measured for hexachlorobenzene (1.7 mg/kg) in goldeneyes, and transnonachlor (0.33 mg/kg) and 4,4’-DDE (1.3 mg/kg) in greater scaup. Quantitative analysis of 72 PCB congeners also was applied to water, seston, sediment, benthie oligochaetes, and carp from the same site. Principal congeners in most of the samples included some of the more toxic and persistent PCBs. Results of a multivariate analysis indicated that ratios of more conservative to less conservative PCBs did not vary significantly among ducks (α = .05), but differed from those in carp, oligochaetes, and sediment. For the February through March period of fat mobilization, concentrations of total PCB in lipid were inversely correlated with percent lipid (r = 0.76) in ducks. The percentage of conservative PCBs increased slightly. The distribution and partitioning of organochlorines, including toxic PCB congeners, varied considerably within this water column-sediment-fauna ecosystem. Estimates of toxic exposure based on total PCB values may be unreliable.

The milling industry faces the task of saving energy without impairing the quantity and quality of the products. By applying experimental plans for the optimization of several effect variables, approximations (compromise solutions) between the cause variables (conditioning parameters) and the effect variables (quantity and quality parameters) are sought, which satisfy the aims laid down.     

Analysis of conduction heat transfer problems in steady, 2D regions with circular holes using a special boundary integral method

A special boundary integral method developed for two-dimensional regions containing circular holes is used to calculate temperature and heat transfer on the boundaries of several selected regions. The geometrical configuration of the region is arbitrary and convective boundary conditions are assumed. An important feature of the method is analytic representation of temperature and its normal derivative on the interior circular holes in the form of a harmonic series. This makes the application of the boundary integral method convenient and free from conditioning problems associated with small interior boundaries. Heat transfer from circular isothermal interior holes are calculated for several illustrative examples using three terms of the harmonic series representation for heat transfer at each of the circular boundaries. The results are presented and discussed.     

A note on the use of conductimetry in brewery microbiological control

The growth in beer of 15 brewery strains of Lactobacillus was detected using the automatic conductance measuring technique afforded by the Malthus 8 Growth Analyser. 0·15% ammonium chloride was added to the beer as an electrolyte and sodium acetate was used to raise the pH from ca 4·0 to 4·2 or above. No measurable responses were obtained using unmodified beer. The value of the method for development in routine brewery microbiological control is briefly discussed.
