Catalytic Oxidation and Reduction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Present as Mixtures in Hydrothermal Media

The reactivity of fluorene, anthracene, and fluoranthene under oxidation and reduction conditions were investigated in this study. This project looks at catalytic and green approaches of converting PAHs to less toxic and/or less stable derivatives that are amenable to further degradation. Hydrothermal reactions have been performed at 300°C with pure H₂O and Nafion-SiO₂ catalyst for oxidation, and pure H₂O, HCOOH, Pd-C, and Nafion-SiO₂ catalysts for reductive hydrogenation. Time series has been performed for both the oxidation and hydrogenation systems. The products of the reaction were identified and quantified by the use of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and the NIST Library. The reaction products include oxidized products of anthracene and fluorene; and hydrogenated derivatives of anthracene and fluoranthene. Fluoranthene did not undergo oxidation, and fluorene did not undergo hydrogenation under the conditions of this research.

INTRASUBJECT RESPONSE VARIABILITY IN RELATION TO INTELLIGENCE.

COMPARED INTRAINDIVIDUAL RESPONSE VARIABILITIES OF NORMALS AND RETARDATES. IN EXP. I, WITH 45 RETARDATES AND 45 COLLEGE STUDENTS, INVOLVING A RT PROCEDURE, INDIVIDUAL RETARDATES WERE BOTH SLOWER AND LESS CONSISTENT IN THEIR REACTIONS. IN EXP. II. WITH 30 RETARDATES AND 30 COLLEGE STUDENTS, EMPLOYING A SHORT-TERM MEMORY TASK, THE MENTALLY SUBNORMAL SS WERE LESS ACCURATE AND MORE VARIABLE THAN NORMALS. VARIABILITY OF BOTH GROUPS INCREASED AS RETENTION INTERVAL INCREASED. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE PERFORMANCE OF MENTALLY RETARDED SS IS CHARACTERIZED AS MUCH BY INCONSISTENCY AS IT IS BY A LOW LEVEL. KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION: A SURVEY OF ITS MECHANISMS,A SKETCH OF ITS SEMANTICS

Abstract

The paper surveys the field of knowledge representation, a sub-area of artificial intelligence research. It describes the syntactic mechanisms developed in this field for “representing knowledge” in computer systems. Special emphasis is put on highlighting their common properties and distinguishing characteristics. In addition, a clarification will be given of what “knowledge representation” actually means, Le., what it is for a syntactic system to “represent knowledge.”     

MINERAL CONTENTS IN SEED COAT AND CANNING QUALITY OF SELECTED CULTIVARS OF DARK RED KIDNEY BEANS (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.)

Three different dark red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars (cvs. 85, 453 and Nickols) grown in Wisconsin were studied to investigate the correlations of the mineral contents in the seed coat and seed coat splits in the canned beans. In the canned product, highly significant differences ( P ≤0.01) in percentage of split seed coats were observed among the three cultivars studied. Canned cultivar 85 significantly showed fewer seed coat splits than the other two cultivars. Significant negative correlations were observed between the percentage of seed coat splits and sodium (r = ? 0.89, P ≤ 0.01), calcium ( r = ? 0.74, P ≤ 0.01) and iron (r = ? 0.79, P ≤ 0.05) contents in the seed coat. This study suggested that the mineral content of the seed coat of kidney beans may play important roles in the integrity of the seed coat during thermal processing.     

Effect of Atmosphere and Temperature on the Equilibrium between Molten Tin and Soda-Lime Glass

The interaction of soda-lime glass with molten tin is of practical and scientific interest. Here the observation that the interfacial tin content of glass in contact with molten tin decreases with increasing temperature and increases with increasing oxygen pressure is confirmed and discussed.     

Endoscopic fluorescence imaging and point spectroscopy system for the detection of gastro-intestinal cancers

We describe a combined endoscopic fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy system for the detection of gastro-intestinal cancers, utilizing the fluorescence from aminolaevulinic acid-induced protoporphyrin IX. Both the imaging and spectroscopy systems are controlled by a single desktop PC, which also carries out image processing and stores spectral data, enabling real-time display of images and spectra on one monitor. These systems have been tested in vivo and the results illustrate the potential of both systems in the detection of early cancers. Preliminary testing of the combined system using a foam model has shown that the combined system may better facilitate cancer detection than the use of either system individually.     

SURFACTANT APPLICATION SYSTEM TO PREVENT ANTHOCYANIN LEAKAGE OF IQF BLUEBERRIES1

Design of an in‐line system to apply carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) surfactant to individually quick frozen blueberries to prevent anthocyanin leakage is presented. Based on design specifications a prototype system was tested. Results of anthocyanin leakage tests performed on blueberries coated using a surfactant distribution unit indicate that a small percentage by weight (such as 1%) of surfactant is effective in reducing anthocyanin leakage. Economic evaluation of the system design revealed a cost range for blueberries from $0.04 to $0.09 per kg. Price of the CMC surfactant had the greatest effect on total operational cost of the system. The designed system represents the best overall system for applying surfactant to blueberries without slowing existing processing operations. Overall, the surfactant application system is not a great economic burden for processors, if customers are willing to absorb the slightly higher cost per kg of coated blueberries.     

Extension of Darken's Equation to Binary Diffusion in Ceramics

The idea of a "relaxation velocity" to compensate for the differing mobilities of the species has been useful in describing binary diffusion in gases, nonelectrolyte liquids, and metals. The application of the idea to binary ceramic systems, particularly those with a common anion, is considered. By making certain simplifying assumptions, (1) the volume of a ceramic is primarily determined by the volume of the anion and (2) the chemical potential of the anion does not depend on cation ratio as long as electrical neutrality is preserved, it is possible to arrive at the appropriate expression for the binary diffusion coefficients in terms of the self-diffusion coefficients and valencies of all species and the activity of one of the compounds. This result is analyzed by considering the intrinsic flux densities of the species, the concentration distribution, and the relaxation velocity and marker movement for several cases and these are plotted schematically.
