Prediction of transverse damage initiation and evolution for not necessarily symmetric laminates under membrane and/or bending loads is the subject of this work. The laminate stiffness reduction is computed via crack opening displacement (COD) methods and the generalization to multiple cracking laminas is made via continuum damage mechanics (CDM) concepts. Using available COD solutions combined with homogenization techniques leads to an analytical constitutive model capable of predicting the initiation and evolution of crack density versus applied strain, as well as laminate modulus degradation, not only for symmetric laminates subjected to membrane deformation but also for general laminates subjected to flexural deformations as well. To adjust the model parameters, experimental data is required in the form of crack density, or modulus reduction, versus strain for two laminates of the same material system. Then, the model is capable of predicting crack density and modulus degradation for other laminate stacking sequences. The model takes into account crack closure, which is important under flexure, as well as the case of the center lamina straddling the neutral axis. The effect of thermal stresses is incorporated in the formulation.  相似文献

As one of the emerging technologies in Indonesia, nanotechnology requires comprehensive studies of supporting infrastructures as well as the regulation that will underpin the quality of nanoproducts or nanoservices. Nanometrology is one of the most important supporting infrastructures for development of nanotechnology. This article reviews the importance of nanometrology and its standardization within the context of nanotechnology development in Indonesia. Current situation of nanotechnology development, relevant standards availability, necessity for new standards, nanometrology development and future goals have been explained. Influenza poses a significant health threat to children, and schools may play a critical role in community outbreaks. Mathematical outbreak models require assumptions about contact rates and patterns among students, but the level of temporal granularity required to produce reliable results is unclear. We collected objective contact data from students aged 5–14 at an elementary school and middle school in the state of Utah, USA, and paired those data with a novel, data-based model of influenza transmission in schools. Our simulations produced within-school transmission averages consistent with published estimates. We compared simulated outbreaks over the full resolution dynamic network with simulations on networks with averaged representations of contact timing and duration. For both schools, averaging the timing of contacts over one or two school days caused average outbreak sizes to increase by 1–8%. Averaging both contact timing and pairwise contact durations caused average outbreak sizes to increase by 10% at the middle school and 72% at the elementary school. Averaging contact durations separately across within-class and between-class contacts reduced the increase for the elementary school to 5%. Thus, the effect of ignoring details about contact timing and duration in school contact networks on outbreak size modelling can vary across different schools.  相似文献

Individuals often pinch with preferred pinch techniques based on their experience and familiarity. However, researchers believe that pinch force exertions are not comparable across different pinch techniques. Hence, it is possible to pinch objects with incompatible pinch techniques during manual handling. This increases risks of developing musculoskeletal disorders. The preceding problem substantiates the need for a comprehensive understanding of definitions, categorisations and capacities of different pinch techniques. Nevertheless, the knowledge on pinch techniques appears to be highly dispersed and not compiled to a level systematic enough for further research. Thus, this review aims to develop a consolidated theoretical groundwork on pinch techniques. It presents an anthology of terminologies, previous findings and concepts underpinning different pinch techniques. While much research is still required, it is believed that an improved understanding on pinch techniques is now within sight, due to, in part, a structured review of their definitions, classifications and capacities.  相似文献

This paper presents an image representation and matching framework for image categorization in medical image archives. Categorization enables one to determine automatically, based on the image content, the examined body region and imaging modality. It is a basic step in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems, the goal of which is to augment text-based search with visual information analysis. CBIR systems are currently being integrated with picture archiving and communication systems for increasing the overall search capabilities and tools available to radiologists. The proposed methodology is comprised of a continuous and probabilistic image representation scheme using Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) along with information-theoretic image matching via the Kullback-Leibler (KL) measure. The GMM-KL framework is used for matching and categorizing X-ray images by body regions. A multidimensional feature space is used to represent the image input, including intensity, texture, and spatial information. Unsupervised clustering via the GMM is used to extract coherent regions in feature space that are then used in the matching process. A dominant characteristic of the radiological images is their poor contrast and large intensity variations. This presents a challenge to matching among the images, and is handled via an illumination-invariant representation. The GMM-KL framework is evaluated for image categorization and image retrieval on a dataset of 1500 radiological images. A classification rate of 97.5% was achieved. The classification results compare favorably with reported global and local representation schemes. Precision versus recall curves indicate a strong retrieval result as compared with other state-of-the-art retrieval techniques. Finally, category models are learned and results are presented for comparing images to learned category models.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effects of marijuana or THC on driving has been tested in several studies, but usually not in conjunction with physiological and subjective responses and not in comparison to alcohol effects on all three types of measures. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of two dosages of THC relative to alcohol on driving performance, physiological strain, and subjective feelings. METHOD: We tested the subjective feelings and driving abilities after placebo, smoking two dosages of THC (13 mg and 17 mg), drinking (0.05% BAC) and 24 h after smoking the high dose THC cigarette, while monitoring physiological activity of the drugs by heart rate. Fourteen healthy students, all recreational marijuana users, participated in the study. RESULTS: Both levels of THC cigarettes significantly affected the subjects in a dose-dependent manner. The moderate dose of alcohol and the low THC dose were equally detrimental to some of the driving abilities, with some differences between the two drugs. THC primarily caused elevation in physical effort and physical discomfort during the drive while alcohol tended to affect sleepiness level. After THC administration, subjects drove significantly slower than in the control condition, while after alcohol ingestion, subjects drove significantly faster than in the control condition. No THC effects were observed after 24 h on any of the measures.  相似文献

The adverse impacts of CO2 emission on the global warming highlight the importance of carbon capture and storage technology and geological storage of CO2 under solubility trapping mechanisms. Enhancing the solubility of CO2 in formation water has always been the focus of research in the area of CO2 sequestration. Ultrasound techniques are one of the environmentally friendly methods that use high-intensity acoustic waves to improve gas solubility in liquids. Ultrasonic waves can alter the properties of different phases that lead to chemical reactions and provide a means to increase the solubility of CO2 in connate water. In this study, we investigated the effects of ultrasound on the solubility of CO2 in connate water under different conditions of pressure, temperature, and salinity. The results showed that the solubility of CO2 was improved with increasing pressure under ultrasonic effects. However, the solubility of CO2 was inversely proportional to the increase in brine salinity and temperature. Therefore, it was concluded that the solubility of CO2 might be enhanced in the presence of ultrasound.  相似文献

BackgroundDrivers adopt various strategies in order to cope with fatigue and falling asleep at the wheel. These strategies include a wide range of activities that may invigorate the body and/or the mind.ObjectivesTo compare usage patterns and to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of different coping behaviors adopted by professional and nonprofessional drivers in order to maintain alertness.MethodThe study was conducted using a large-scale survey, filled by 100 professional and 90 nonprofessional drivers.ResultsListening to the radio and opening the window were the most frequently used and also perceived as highly effective coping behaviors by both groups of drivers. Talking on a cellular phone or with a passenger were more frequently used by nonprofessional drivers whereas, planning rest stops ahead, stopping for a short nap and drinking coffee were more frequently used by professional drivers. These methods were also perceived as more effective by professional than by the nonprofessional drivers and their usage frequency highly correlated with their perceived effectiveness.ConclusionsNonprofessional drivers counteract fatigue only at the tactical/maneuvering level of the drive. Hence, they tend to adopt methods that help them pass the time and reduce their feeling of boredom but do not require advance preparations or adjustments in the driving. In contrast, professional drivers counteract fatigue also at the strategic/planning level of driving, and use a much larger repertoire of coping-behaviors.ImplicationsFatigue countermeasures should include all levels of the driving task hierarchy, and experience-based countermeasures used by professional drivers should be considered for experimental validation.  相似文献
