This study shows that calcium silicate/aluminate-based materials can be carbonated to produce sorbents for metal removal. The material chosen for investigation, cement clinker, was accelerated carbonated, and its structural properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and nitrogen gas adsorption techniques. The principal carbonation reactions involved the transformation of dicalcium silicate, tricalcium silicate, and tricalcium aluminate into a Ca/Al-modified amorphous silica and calcium carbonate. It was found that carbonated cement had high acid buffering capacity, and maintained its structural integrity within a wide pH range. The uptake of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cr(II), Sr(II), Mo(VI), Cs(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) from concentrated (1000 mg L(-1)) single-metal solutions varied from 35 to 170 mg g(-1) of the carbonate cement. The removal of metals was hardly effected by the initial solution pH due to the buffering capability of the carbonated material. The kinetics of Pb, Cd, Cr, Sr, Cs, and Co removal followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, whereas the equilibrium batch data for Cu fitted the pseudo-first-order rate equation. PHREEQC simulation supported by XRD analysis suggested the formation of metal carbonates and silicates, calcium molybdate, and chromium (hydro)oxide. Cesium was likely to be adsorbed by Ca/Al-modified amorphous silica.  相似文献

Recent efforts have focused on improving the application of ozone technology as a pest management tool for stored grain. This study evaluated the efficacy of a modified screw conveyor to treat grain with ozone in a continuous-flow system. The ozone concentration delivered into the screw conveyor was 47,800 ppm and the average retention time for a corn kernel moving through the system was 1.8 min. Under these conditions, 100% mortality of adult red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)) and adult maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.)) was achieved after three passes through the screw conveyor, which equated to a concentration × time (CT) product value of 258,120 ppm-min. The potential effectiveness of the continuous treatment to reduce mold on the surface of corn kernels was also explored. Aspergillus flavus counts were reduced by 96% in a single pass through the screw conveyor. Three passes through the screw conveyor reduced the mold count by more than 2-log units. Ozone treatment also reduced aflatoxin applied to the grain; however, the reduction was not sufficient enough to be of commercial value. The results of this study provide valuable information for estimating the parameters needed for effectively treating grain in a commercial scale continuous-flow treatment system.  相似文献

In many areas of Northern and Western Alaska, small streams and shallow lakes serve as community raw water supplies. These water supplies freeze completely during winter. In order to supply drinking water during the 6–9 month winter, communities store water that was treated during summer. A chlorine residual is maintained in the stored water. Raw water sources derived from surface water may be heavily laden with dissolved organic matter. At utilities where organic matter escapes treatment, the potential for accumulation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during storage is a significant health concern. The following study was performed to evaluate this potential threat. Water was collected from five operating utilities, four that normally store water for 6–9 months and one that produces drinking water year-round. Raw, filtered (i.e., unchlorinated) and “finished” (i.e., filtered and chlorinated) water samples were collected during the summer pumping season and stored in the laboratory for 8 months. In order to mimic practice in the field, the chlorine residual was maintained in the finished water for the full storage period. While the concentration of DBPs in the finished water varied over the study period, there was not a statistically significant trend from the third to the eighth month of storage. The observed DBP values were strongly a function of the type of treatment system used. Those systems passing more organic matter had higher DBP values throughout the storage period. The ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nanometers ?start(UV254)end? decreased continuously in the finished water coincident with chlorine consumption. ?startUV254end?, often used as a surrogate for DBPs, remained constant during the entire storage periodin raw and filtered water samples. Filtered water that was stored prior to chlorination accumulated fewer DBPs than finished water that was continuously chlorinated during the storage period. This result suggests that storing filtered water instead of finished water for long periods would limit DBP exposure to consumers. This conclusion was based on a comparison of DBP formation potentials (i.e., raw and filtered water) to DBPs (i.e., finished water). It is important to note that DBP formation potentials are based on a ?start24?hend?chlorine contact time. If long term storage were provided for filtered water, a smaller volume of secondary storage would still be needed to provide contact time for disinfection.  相似文献

It is known that metabolic disturbances, including obesity, predispose to an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Elevated consumption of dietary fat results in intramyocardial accumulation of lipids and their biologically active derivatives, which can disrupt the contractile function of the heart, its metabolism, and intracellular signaling pathways. Therefore, alternative methods, such as phytocannabinoids, are being sought for the treatment of obesity-related effects. In a model of rodent obesity (seven weeks of high-fat-diet (HFD) regime), we used cannabidiol—CBD therapy (intraperitoneal injections for 14 days; 10 mg/kg). High-performance and gas-liquid chromatographies were applied in order to determine sphingolipids in the heart and plasma as well as Western blotting for protein expression. Two-week CBD administration significantly inhibited the de novo ceramide synthesis pathway in the heart of HFD fed rats by lowering sphinganine and sphinganine-1-phosphate contents. The above reductions were accompanied by markedly diminished expressions of myocardial serine palmitoyltransferase 1 and 2 as well as ceramide synthase 5 and 6 in the HFD group with 2-week CBD treatment. To our knowledge, this research is the first that reveals unknown effects of CBD treatment on the heart, i.e., amelioration of de novo ceramide synthesis pathway in obese rats.  相似文献

Crossover designs are an extremely useful tool to investigators, and group sequential methods have proven highly proficient at improving the efficiency of parallel group trials. Yet, group sequential methods and crossover designs have rarely been paired together. One possible explanation for this could be the absence of a formal proof of how to strongly control the familywise error rate in the case when multiple comparisons will be made. Here, we provide this proof, valid for any number of initial experimental treatments and any number of stages, when results are analyzed using a linear mixed model. We then establish formulae for the expected sample size and expected number of observations of such a trial, given any choice of stopping boundaries. Finally, utilizing the four-treatment, four-period TOMADO trial as an example, we demonstrate that group sequential methods in this setting could have reduced the trials expected number of observations under the global null hypothesis by over 33%.  相似文献

Mg-substituted hydroxyapatite (HAp) bioceramic microspheres were prepared by spray drying and subsequent processing at 1173, 1273 and 1373 K. Influence of various Mg substitution levels (up to 0.84 ± 0.10 wt%) on physicochemical properties of the HAp bioceramic microspheres was evaluated. Obtained results were used for the elucidation of the compositional and structural characteristics of the microspheres in conjunction with adsorption of protein, namely, bovine serum albumin (BSA). The primary difference among the microspheres processed at various temperature was the presence or absence of the micropores (<2 nm in diameter) and mesopores (between 2 and 50 nm). Presence of the micro- and mesopores resulted in higher specific surface area (SSA), enhanced solubility, i.e., ion release, and, accordingly, increase in the amount of BSA adsorbed on the microspheres. Furthermore, the BSA adsorption capacity of the microspheres decreased with increasing Mg content despite of higher SSA.  相似文献
