A common cause of local tumor recurrence in brain tumor surgery results from incomplete surgical resection. Adjunctive technologies meant to facilitate gross total resection have had limited efficacy to date. Contrast agents used to delineate tumors preoperatively cannot be easily or accurately used in the real‐time operative setting. Although multimodal imaging contrast agents are developed to help the surgeon discern tumor from normal tissue in the operating room, these contrast agents are not readily translatable. This study has developed a novel contrast agent comprised solely of two Food and Drug Administration approved components, indocyanine green (ICG) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles—with no additional amphiphiles or carrier materials, to enable preoperative detection by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and intraoperative photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The encapsulation efficiency of both ICG and SPIO within the formulated clusters is ≈100%, and the total ICG payload is 20–30% of the total weight (ICG + SPIO). The ICG–SPIO clusters are stable in physiologic conditions; can be taken up within tumors by enhanced permeability and retention; and are detectable by MR. In a preclinical surgical resection model in mice, following injection of ICG–SPIO clusters, animals undergoing PA‐guided surgery demonstrate increased progression‐free survival compared to animals undergoing microscopic surgery.  相似文献

The present work describes the process by which the pilot project of clinical management of the Hospital Complex Juan Canalejo, designated as "Heart Area", was implemented. In the first section, the needs and reasons that led to the undertaking of this project are explained. The project's objectives and operative strategies are listed. In the Material and Methods section, three basic aspects of the "Heart Area" are described: selection criteria of the "Area", its structure and function, and its foundation and development. In the Results section, we compare the activity undertaken in the "Area" to the situation present prior to its implementation, in relation to quality and costs. Finally, in the Conclusions, we comment on the important implications that our project can have within the Hospital Complex Juan Canalejo as well as in the health care field in general.  相似文献

The ability to integrate information from different sensory systems is a fundamental characteristic of the brain. Because different bits of information are derived from different sensory channels, their synthesis markedly enhances the detection and identification of external stimuli. The neural substrate for such "multisensory" integration is provided by neurons that receive convergent input from two or more sensory modalities. Many such multisensory neurons are found in the superior colliculus (SC), a midbrain structure that plays a significant role in overt attentive and orientation behaviors. The various principles governing the integration of visual, auditory, and somatosensory inputs in SC neurons have been explored in several species. Thus far, the evidence suggests a remarkable conservation of integrative features during vertebrate evolution. One of the most robust of these principles is based on spatial relationships: a striking enhancement in activity is induced in a multisensory neuron when two different sensory stimuli (e.g., visual and auditory) are in spatial concordance, whereas a profound response depression can be induced when these cues are spatially discordant. The most extensive physiological observations have been made in cat, and in this species the same principles that have been shown to govern multisensory integration at the level of the individual SC neuron have also been shown to govern overt attentive and orientation responses to multisensory stimuli. Most surprising, however, is the critical role played by association (i.e. anterior ectosylvian) cortex in facilitating these midbrain processes. In the absence of the modulating corticotectal influences, multisensory SC neurons in cat are unable to integrate the different sensory cues converging upon them in an adult-like fashion, and are unable to mediate overt multisensory behaviors. This situation appears quite similar to that observed during early postnatal life. When multisensory SC neurons first appear, they are able to respond to multiple sensory inputs but are unable to synthesize these inputs to significantly enhance or degrade their responses. During ontogeny, individual multisensory neurons develop this capacity abruptly, but at very different ages, until the mature population condition is reached after several postnatal months. It appears likely that the abrupt onset of this capacity in any individual SC neuron reflects the maturation of inputs from anterior ectosylvian cortex. Presumably, the functional coupling of cortex with an individual SC neuron is essential to initiate and maintain that neuron's capability for multisensory integration throughout its life.  相似文献

Research in automatic text plagiarism detection focuses on algorithms that compare suspicious documents against a collection of reference documents. Recent approaches perform well in identifying copied or modified foreign sections, but they assume a closed world where a reference collection is given. This article investigates the question whether plagiarism can be detected by a computer program if no reference can be provided, e.g., if the foreign sections stem from a book that is not available in digital form. We call this problem class intrinsic plagiarism analysis; it is closely related to the problem of authorship verification. Our contributions are threefold. (1) We organize the algorithmic building blocks for intrinsic plagiarism analysis and authorship verification and survey the state of the art. (2) We show how the meta learning approach of Koppel and Schler, termed “unmasking”, can be employed to post-process unreliable stylometric analysis results. (3) We operationalize and evaluate an analysis chain that combines document chunking, style model computation, one-class classification, and meta learning.  相似文献

Monitoring of large sites requires coordination between multiple cameras, which in turn requires methods for relating events between distributed cameras. This paper tackles the problem of automatic external calibration of multiple cameras in an extended scene, that is, full recovery of their 3D relative positions and orientations. Because the cameras are placed far apart, brightness or proximity constraints cannot be used to match static features, so we instead apply planar geometric constraints to moving objects tracked throughout the scene. By robustly matching and fitting tracked objects to a planar model, we align the scene's ground plane across multiple views and decompose the planar alignment matrix to recover the 3D relative camera and ground plane positions. We demonstrate this technique in both a controlled lab setting where we test the effects of errors in the intrinsic camera parameters, and in an uncontrolled, outdoor setting. In the latter, we do not assume synchronized cameras and we show that enforcing geometric constraints enables us to align the tracking data in time. In spite of noise in the intrinsic camera parameters and in the image data, the system successfully transforms multiple views of the scene's ground plane to an overhead view and recovers the relative 3D camera and ground plane positions  相似文献

This paper is about tool support for knowledge-intensive engineering tasks. In particular, it introduces software technology to assist the design of complex technical systems. There is a long tradition in automated design problem solving in the field of artificial intelligence, where, especially in the early stages, the search paradigm dictated many approaches. Later, in the so-called modern period, a better problem understanding led to the development of more adequate problem solving techniques. However, search still constitutes an indispensable part in computer-based design problem solving—albeit many human problem solvers get by without (almost). We tried to learn lessons from this observation, and one is presented in this paper. We introduce design problem solving by functional abstraction which follows the motto: construct a poor solution with little search, which then must be repaired. For the domain of fluidic engineering we have operationalized the paradigm by the combination of several high-level techniques. The red thread of this paper is design automation, but the presented technology does also contribute in the following respects: (a) productivity enhancement by relieving experts from auxiliary and routine tasks; (b) formulation, exchange, and documentation of knowledge about design; (c) requirements engineering, feasibility analysis, and validation. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of drivers' age and low light on speed, lane keeping, and visual recognition of typical roadway stimuli. BACKGROUND: Poor visibility, which is exacerbated by age-related changes in vision, is a leading contributor to fatal nighttime crashes. There is little evidence, however, concerning the extent to which drivers recognize and compensate for their visual limitations at night. METHOD: Young, middle-aged, and elder participants drove on a closed road course in day and night conditions at a "comfortable" speed without speedometer information. During night tests, headlight intensity was varied over a range of 1.5 log units using neutral density filters. RESULTS: Average speed and recognition of road signs decreased significantly as functions of increased age and reduced illumination. Recognition of pedestrians at night was significantly enhanced by retroreflective markings of limb joints as compared with markings of the torso, and this benefit was greater for middle-aged and elder drivers. Lane keeping showed nonlinear effects of lighting, which interacted with task conditions and drivers' lateral bias, indicating that older drivers drove more cautiously in low light. CONCLUSION: Consistent with the hypothesis that drivers misjudge their visual abilities at night, participants of all age groups failed to compensate fully for diminished visual recognition abilities in low light, although older drivers behaved more cautiously than the younger groups. APPLICATION: These findings highlight the importance of educating all road users about the limitations of night vision and provide new evidence that retroreflective markings of the limbs can be of great benefit to pedestrians' safety at night.  相似文献

At the 1992 AAAI robot contest one of the top finishers was Scarecrow—a robot that had no computer in the traditional sense, was built out of less than $200 of parts, and was explained and operated by a five year old. The designers sought to demonstrate the capabilities and competence that can be accomplished by using a strictly reactive architecture for well defined tasks such as that contest. This paper reexamines the Scarecrow robot and puts it into historical context. With fifteen years of perspective, we can also see what Scarecrow has to say about the perception of intelligence.

A cross-sectional study of task demands and musculoskeletal discomfort among a sample of 100 wait staff in ten casual dining restaurants was conducted. In addition to answering a questionnaire about musculoskeletal discomfort and symptoms experienced in the past 12 months and attributed to work, subjects were asked about various aspects of their jobs, such as shift length, number of shifts per week and safety training. The managers of the restaurants were also interviewed to gather basic information on factors such as work hours, alternative duty availability and safety practices. When asked to rank the three most important causes of injuries, the responses of both managers and wait staff were congruent with Bureau of Labor Statistics (USA) data for 1999 on the nature of injuries and attributed exposures, with slips and falls, musculoskeletal disorders and acute injuries (e.g. burns, cuts) highlighted. Of the 100 subjects, 42% reported experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms in the past year, with the lower back area (18%) and shoulder (11%) with the most frequent symptoms reported in the responses. Although many of the materials handling tasks were not excessive, the heavier tray lifts and carries are a cause for concern. There are also slip and fall issues that influence the risks of these tasks. Future research needs, including addressing the mismatch between more common materials handling assessment tools and the nature of food serving tasks, are discussed.  相似文献
