Optical waveguides in SIMOX structures

Propagation characteristics determined experimentally and theoretically for planar optical waveguides formed in separation by implantation of oxygen (SIMOX) structures are discussed. All samples were found to support both TE and TM modes at both 1.15 μm and 1.523 μm with a lowest propagation loss of 8 dB/cm. This loss was measured at a wavelength of 1.15 μm for the TE₀ mode of a planar waveguide with a 2.0-μm-thick Si guiding layer     

Physicochemical properties of Venezuelan breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) starch

Artocarpus altilis, seedless variety, is a fruit-producing plant which is cultived in Margarita Island, Venezuela, and is consumed by the inhabitants of the region. Its chemical composition and physical characteristics were determined. The chemical (AOAC and AACC methods), physicochemical, morphometric characteristics, viscoamylographic properties and digestibility in vitro of starch from Artocarpus were studied. The starch yield was 18.5 g/100 g (dw)w with a purity of 98.86%, 27.68 and 72.32% of amylose and amylopectin, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed irregular-rounded granules. Swelling power, water absorption and solubility values were determined and found to be higher than that of corn and amaranth starch. The amylographic study showed a gelatinization temperature at 73.3 degrees C, with high stability during heating and cooling cycles. Artocarpus starch could also be categorized in the group of mixed short chain branched/long chain branched glucan starches, this agrees with digestibility results that showed a high degree of digestibility in vitro. These results might be advantageous in medical and food use.     

Effects of aging on neurons and glial cells from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus in rats

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aging on glial cells and neurons from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus in rats. We used stereological methods to estimate the volume of the superficial layers, neuron size, and the number of neurons and glial cells in Wistar male rats aged 3, 24, 26, and 28 months. A 32.6% volume increase was found in the stratum griseum superficiale between the ages of 3 and 26 months, while in the 28-month-old animals a 19% decrease was observed. The stratum opticum did not show any changes in volume with age. Also, our analysis revealed a process of somatic and nuclear atrophy in the neurons of the superficial layers in animals aged 26 and 28 months. On the other hand, no statistically significant differences were found in the numbers of neurons. The number of glial cells in the stratum griseum superficiale showed an increase between the 3rd and 26th month, while the stratum opticum suffered no change.     

Induction of bilateral retinal necrosis in mice by unilateral intracameral inoculation of a glycoprotein-C deficient clinical isolate of herpes simplex virus type 1

Herpes simplex virus can cause acute retinal necrosis, a blinding retinal disease in man. A unilateral intracameral inoculation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in mice induces retinal necrosis primarily in the contralateral eye and provides an experimental model for the disease. Previous studies suggested that a major envelope glycoprotein of HSV-1, glycoprotein C (gC), is required for retinal necrosis. We studied HSV-1 strain TN-1, a gC-deficient clinical isolated from a lesion of herpetic keratitis, for its pathogenicity in mice with an intracameral inoculation of the virus and found that TN-1 could induce severe necrotizing retinitis in both inoculated and uninoculated eyes of BALB/c mice. Inoculation with a lower dose of TN-1 resulted in a unilateral necrotizing retinitis in the uninoculated eyes. Tissue virus titration of infected mice killed at various times after inoculation detected an infectious virus in various organs including the eyeballs, trigeminal ganglia, brain and adrenal glands. Anterior chamber-associated immune deviation (ACAID) was observed in TN-1-inoculated mice as well as in mice inoculated with gC-positive laboratory strain KOS 7 days postinoculation. Our findings suggested that gC of HSV-1 is not necessary for either the induction of retinal necrosis, neural spread of the virus, or ACAID.     

Adenylosuccinate synthetase genes: molecular cloning and phylogenetic analysis of a highly conserved archaeal gene

Adenylosuccinate synthetase (PurA) catalyzes the first step in the de novo AMP synthesis and has been extensively studied in both Bacteria and Eukarya. We cloned the purA gene from the hyperthermophilic archaeon, Pyrococcus furiosus. The gene appears to be individually transcribed and encodes a protein of 339 amino acids. The amino acid sequence comparison with other archael PurAs found from recent genome analyses indicated that two deletions, one central and the other C-terminal, are a common feature of archaeal PurAs. None of the 21 PurA homologues analyzed from Eukarya and Bacteria exhibited this feature. Amino acid sequences of PurAs in Archaea showed 64% average identities which were significantly higher than the 50% and 55% calculated for Bacteria and Eukarya, respectively. Several residues conserved in PurAs of both Eukarya and Bacteria and shown to be of catalytic importance are missing in the archaeal PurAs. Phylogenetic analysis using PurA as the marker grouped life into 3 domains, hence it was consistent with results derived from 16-18S ribosomal RNA sequences. The topology within the three domains, in general, portrayed the hitherto accepted evolutionary relationship among the organisms utilized. PurA can, thus, serve as an additional marker to evaluate phylogenetic inferences drawn from sequence data from rRNA and other conserved genes. The presence of two unique deletions in both euryarchaeal and crenarchaeal PurAs, but not in those of Bacteria and Eukarya, is a strong evidence confirming the common lineage of these two subdomains of Archaea.

The current congestion in the Internet has motivated the use of alternate paths-using satellites to support global Internet transport and access. Effects of different pre-freezing blanching procedures on the physicochemical properties of Brassica rapa leaves (Turnip Greens, Grelos)

For optimal freeze storage, green vegetables should first be blanched. The present study compared four different procedures for the blanching of grelos (leaves of Brassica rapa L.): steaming for 2 min, immersion in boiling water for 2 min, immersion in boiling water containing 1% citric acid for 1 min, and immersion in boiling water containing 5% citric acid for 1 min. After blanching, the grelos were stored for up to 120 days at ?18 °C, with sampling at two‐weekly intervals for analysis of physicochemical properties (ash weight, vitamin C content, pH, acid value, moisture content and CIE_L*a*b* colour variables). In almost all respects steam blanching gave the best results: notably, vitamin C losses were markedly lower, while moisture content and colour remained closer to those of the fresh product.     

Design and Query Strategies to Hypermedia Applications

In this paper we propose an object-oriented model for designing hypermedia applications. As the object-oriented paradigm allows complex and user-defined types, nonconventional and nonatomic attributes, we can take advantage of these capabilities, not only for information modelling, but also for providing alternative ways for accessing information.A query language is then presented; it is based on an Object-Oriented Database System query language. It combines features of object-oriented databases queries and primitives for hypermedia navigation. The language offers the possibility of querying both the application-domain information, and allowing the designers to obtain information about the schema of the application.We present some examples of the use of the object-oriented model and the query language.     

Recruiting and retaining low-income Latinos in psychotherapy research.

This article offers suggestions for recruiting and retaining low-income Latinos in treatment studies. Because Latinos underuse traditional mental health services, places such as medical centers or churches with large Latino constituents are suggested as useful alternative sources. To keep Latinos in research protocols, providing culturally sensitive treatments are necessary. Culturally sensitive treatments should incorporate families as part of recruitment efforts, particularly older men in the family. In addition, showing respect is an important aspect of traditional Latino culture that includes using formal titles and taking time to listen carefully. Finally, traditional Latinos tend to like interactions with others that are more warm and personal than is generally part of a research atmosphere. Investigation of thermal degradation of polystyrene by differential scanning calorimetry

Thermal degradation of polystyrene was performed in a differential scanning calorimeter under nitrogen atmosphere, and the glass transition temperature was measured continuously. From random chain scission kinetics and T_g-molecular weight relationships, the rate constant for random scission was obtained. The rate constant was found to undergo a drastic change at a critical molecular weight (∽45,000), which corresponds to a similar observation in relaxation studies. A viscosity-dependent mechanism for radical chain end termination is thus suggested.
