Stereochemical course of Escherichia coli RNase H

A new enzymatic method has allowed the assignment of the stereochemistry of E. coli RNase-H-assisted hydrolysis of RNA labelled within the scissile bond with (R(p))-phosphorothioate. This method is based on a stereospecific, two-step enzymatic conversion of cytidine 5'-[(18)O]phosphorothioate into the corresponding 5'-alpha-[(18)O]thiotriphosphate, which is then further used for stereospecific transfer of cytidine 5'-[(18)O]phosphorothioate to the 3'-OH group of a short oligonucleotide with the aid of terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry of the resulting elongated primer revealed that RNase-H-assisted hydrolysis proceeds with inversion of configuration at the phosphorus atom. This result is discussed in the context of current knowledge of the architecture of the active site of the enzyme.     

Autoproteolysis rate of rainbow trout muscle proteins

Effect of some physicochemical agents (pH, temperature and incubation time) and iced storage of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) on autoproteolysis of muscle proteins and quality (sensory assessment, instrumental texture, total bacterial counts) were determined. The results showed that the autoproteolysis rate proceeded with its highest intensity at pH 4.2 and temperature about 55 degrees C. The rate of protein hydrolysis and protease activity, as well as microbial contamination, gradually increased with prolonged periods of iced storage of fish. Properly iced trout immediately after its evisceration was acceptable in quality for up to 10 days.     

IEH graphs

We propose a new family of interconnection topology that can be used to design communication architecture for distributed systems with an arbitrary number of computing nodes. The design is based on a novel generalization of the well known hypercube graphs. The proposed topology is shown to be incrementally extensible in steps of 1 (cost of restructuring or adding edges is very low), optimally fault tolerant and its diameter is logarithmic in the number of nodes. Moreover, for any given number of nodes, the difference of the maximum and the minimum degree of a node in the graph is ≤1, i.e., the graph is almost regular. A shortest routing algorithm for the proposed family of graphs has been developed.     

An evolution algorithm for noise modeling of HEMT’s down to cryogenic temperatures

The implementation of an Evolution Algorithm (EA) for the cryogenic noise modeling of microwave devices has been the object of the present work. Several approaches exist to treat the modeling issue as far as advanced microwave transistors are concerned. The aim of such procedures is mostly oriented to extract a linear equivalent circuit including noise performance that allows to reproduce the global device behavior in a small signal regime. In the present paper, the authors show how EA’s can be employed to solve the noise modeling problem according to a black-box approach. The application refers to the simulation of the Noise Parameters of High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT) in the 6-18 GHz frequency range and down to cryogenic temperatures (90K) compared with experimental data. The quality of results indicates that EA techniques represent a truly alternative way to determine the microwave noise performance of HEMT devices, thus furnishing a flexible tool to support CAD of high sensitivity – ultra high speed circuits.     

Silsesquioxane-based hybrid nanocomposites with methacrylate units containing titania and/or silver nanoparticles as antibacterial/antifungal coatings for monumental stones

The present paper reports on the evaluation of two silsesquioxane-based hybrid nanocomposites with methacrylate units containing titania and/or silver nanoparticles aimed as antibacterial coatings for monumental stones. Sol–gel reaction of titanium isopropoxide and/or 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, in the presence of silver nitrate and a primary amine surfactant, yielded new types of hybrid nanocomposites with high antibacterial/antifungal efficacy. Different polymer behaviours regarding a frequently used monumental stone originating from Romania were evidenced through Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) technique. Conclusions regarding the stones acid-resistant character and lower influence of salt weathering on its durability, as well as a better protective coating containing titania units were revealed.     

Remote Field Eddy Current Control Using Rotating Magnetic Field Transducer: Application to Pressure Tubes Examination

The remote field eddy current (RFEC) technique is used to investigate the possibility of detecting the discontinuities practiced on pressure tubes samples from nuclear reactors, pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWR) type. In this article, we propose to develop the RFEC using the technique of rotating magnetic field (RMF). A method for calculating the field generated by the eddy current transducer with RMF using propagator matrix was developed. The experimental measurements are realized for artificial discontinuities practiced in pressure tubes samples.     

Molecular exchange through membranes of poly(2-vinylpyridine-block-ethylene oxide) vesicles

The molecular exchange of tracer molecules through the membranes of dispersed vesicles of the block copolymer poly(2-vinylpyridine-block-ethylene oxide) was studied by using NMR spectroscopy combined with pulsed field gradients. The hydrodynamic radius of the tracer molecules was varied systematically to obtain a permeability profile of the vesicle membrane. In addition, the effect of system parameters, such as temperature, pH value, vesicle size, and thickness of the vesicle membrane, was studied. In the case of rapid exchange with average residence times significantly smaller than 10 s, the permeation is observed under equilibrium conditions and the data are analyzed by using a simple analytical approach. For slow exchange processes with average residence times above 10 s, the permeation is monitored in a time-resolved measurement under nonequilibrium conditions. Generally, the transmembrane exchange rate of the tracer clearly depends on its hydrodynamic radius. The characteristics of this dependence indicate the presence of two different mechanisms of membrane penetration, one dominating for smaller and one for larger tracer molecules, respectively. The exchange rate also shows a significant dependence on the bilayer thickness and on the vesicle diameter. By contrast, no variation of the membrane permeability with the temperature or the pH value could be detected as long as the vesicles remain stable.     

Nutritional status of Cuban elders in three different geriatric scenarios: community, geriatrics service, nursery home

The undernutrition rates observed in Cuban elders surveyed in three different geriatric scenarios: Community: coastal town of Cojímar (City of Havana); Geriatrics Service ("Hermanos Ameijeiras" Hospital, City of Havana); and Nursery Home (city of Cárdenas, province of Matanzas) by means of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) of the Elderly are presented. Undernutrition rates were 2.7% among elders surveyed in the coastal community of Cojímar, but increased to become 91.6% among those admitted to the hospital Geriatrics Service, and 95.3% for those institutionalized in the Nursery Home, respectively. The occurrence of undernutrition can be low among elders living freely in the community, but it might affect a vast number of those seeking medical assistance at the public health institutions. Extent of undernutrition among elders in geriatric assistance scenarios should lead to the adoption of the required measures for early identification, and timely treatment, of this health problem.
