Adhesively bonded joints can support a longer fatigue life if compared to conventional joining techniques, provided that a set of requirements is fulfilled. One of the most important requirements is the mechanical preparation of the bonded joint surface, which improves the joint interface adhesion. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of surface roughness of mild steel substrates on fatigue behavior in adhesive bonded plates. To accomplish this objective, three different surface treatments were used on A36 steel substrate specimens, namely sand blasting, grit blasting, and bristle blasting. Bonded plate specimens, using end-notched flexure format, with a thin adhesive epoxy layer were manufactured and tested, under mode II loading condition, in both static and dynamic tests. The results confirm the importance of surface treatment of the substrate on the fatigue life, confirming that adhesively bonded joints have significant performance differences when subjected to static and dynamic loadings.  相似文献

Data were collected from eight cities on a wide range of cigarette and smoker characteristics for a sample of smokers. Of these, 564 smokers had had fires and were identified through fire department response to those fires, while the other 1,611 smokers had not had fires and were identified through a telephone sample survey of the communities. The characteristics analyzed included those that had shown evidence of a relationship to the risk of a cigarette-initiated fire, either in laboratory studies or in previous statistical analyses of fire experience.The smoker characteristics analyzed were household income, education, age, gender, and race. The cigarette characteristics analyzed were filter, tobacco column length, filter length, circumference, density, amount of tobacco, menthol, citrate, porosity, and pack type. In addition, a variable was used to control for the smoker's city.After controlling for all smoker characteristics and city, logistic regression modeling showed four cigarette characteristics to be significant: filter, filter length, porosity, and type of pack. Filter, filter length, and porosity all affect air intake, which, therefore, appears to be an important physical element in the combustion process associated with risk. Analysis limited to filtered cigarettes only showed the same characteristics to be significant, plus tobacco column length. Extension of the analysis to two-way interaction terms did not change any of the conclusions on which cigarette characteristics are important, but it did indicate that the role of pack type was different for men and women.Sensitivity analyses, shown in the appendix, supported the main conclusions that cigarette characteristics are significant after controlling for smoker characteristics and that the four specific cigarette characteristics—filter, filter length, porosity, and pack—are the ones that are significant. These analyses checked the impact of cluster sampling, sensitivity to missing data on smoker characteristics, and sensitivity to nonfire smoker cases with responses by people other than the smokers themselves.All this means that there are already cigarettes commercially available that exhibit a reduced propensity for ignition when one controls for smoker characteristics.This report was originally written as the final report in June 1993 as part of CPSC-P-91-1147 Contract Cigarette Fire Incident Study that the National Fire Protection Association conducted for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.Harwood, formerly with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is retired.  相似文献

We present a two-dimensional model of a bulk heterojunction solar cell in which we include the effects of optical interference, exciton diffusion, charge separation via the formation of polaron pairs, and charge transport in two separate interpenetrating phases. Our model shows that the current is increased by an order of magnitude with a full optical model compared to assuming that absorbed photons have a Lambertian profile, and depends much more strongly on applied bias when dissociation via polaron pairs is considered. We find a power efficiency at solar intensities of 1-3% depending on the morphology, and show that the fill factor decreases from 40% at low intensities to 20% at solar intensities because of the increase in the open circuit voltage and decreases much more rapidly at higher intensities due to the decrease in the power efficiency.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating in vitro osteogenesis on three fluorcanasite glass-ceramic compositions with different solubilities (K3, K5, and K8). Osteoblastic cells were obtained from human alveolar bone fragments and cultured under standard osteogenic condition until subconfluence. First passage cells were cultured on K3, K5, and K8 and on Bioglass((R)) 45S5 (45S5-control). Cell adhesion was evaluated at 24 h. For proliferation and viability, cells were cultured for 1, 4, and 10 days. Total protein content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were measured at 7, 14, and 21 days. Cultures were stained with Alizarin red at 21 days, for detection of mineralized matrix. Data were compared by ANOVA followed by Duncan's test. Cell adhesion, cell proliferation, viability, total protein content, and ALP activity were not affected by fluorcanasite glass-ceramic composition and solubility. Bone-like formation was similar on all fluorcanasite glass-ceramics and was reduced compared to 45S5. The changes in the chemical composition and consequently solubility of the fluorcanasite glass-ceramics tested here did not significantly alter the in vitro osteogenesis. Further modifications of the chemical composition of the fluorcanasite glass-ceramic would be required to improve bone response, making this biomaterial a good candidate to be employed as a bone substitute.  相似文献

Soft biomaterials are often used in applications that involve contact and relative motion against biological tissues, as well as complicated and variable environments. The friction coefficient of these contacts involving living human cells is of key importance in the analysis and success of these devices. This work measures the contacting friction coefficient between soft hydrogel biomaterial surfaces against live human corneal epithelial cells using a custom micro-tribometer. The friction coefficients were of the order of μ = 0.03 for contacts that did not cause gross destruction of the cell layer. Damage to the confluent cell layer was assessed using a Trypan blue stain with optical microscopy. This damage was quantified statistically using image-processing software. The damage was also correlated to in situ friction measurements, with the lowest friction values seen on undamaged cells and higher friction on damaged regions.  相似文献

Composite materials are being used with notable effectiveness to increase and upgrade the flexural load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members. Near-surface mounted (NSM) is one of the most promising strengthening techniques, based on the use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. According to NSM, the laminates are fixed with epoxy based adhesive into slits opened into the concrete cover on the tension face of the elements to strength. Laboratory tests have shown that the NSM technique is an adequate strengthening strategy to increase the flexural resistance of RC slabs. However, in RC slabs of low concrete strength, the increase of the flexural resistance that NSM can provide is limited by the maximum allowable compressive strain in the compressed part of the slab, in order to avoid concrete crushing. This restriction reduces the effectiveness of the strengthening, thus limiting the use of the NSM technique. A new thin layer of concrete bonded to the existing concrete at the compressed region is suitable to overcome this limitation. Volumetric contraction due to shrinkage and thermal effects can induce uncontrolled cracking in the concrete of this thin layer. Adding steel fibers to concrete [steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC)], the postcracking residual stress can be increased in order to prevent the formation of uncontrolled crack patterns. In the present work, the combined strengthening strategy, a SFRC overlay and NSM CFRP laminates, was applied to significantly increase the flexural resistance of existing RC slabs. Experimental results of four-point bending tests, carried out in unstrengthened and strengthened concrete slab strips, are presented and analyzed.  相似文献

Trajectories of children's externalizing behavior were examined using multilevel growth curve modeling of data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. According to ratings by both mothers and caregivers/teachers when children were 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9 years old, externalizing behavior declined with age. However, mothers rated children as higher in externalizing behavior than did caregivers and teachers. Higher levels of age 9 externalizing behavior were predicted by the following factors: child male gender (for caregiver/teacher reports only), infant difficult temperament (for children with harsh mothers only), harsher maternal attitude toward discipline, higher level of maternal depression (for maternal reports only), and lower level of maternal sensitivity (especially for boys). Caregivers and teachers reported higher levels of externalizing behavior in African American children than in European American children, increasingly so over time; mothers' ratings revealed the reverse. The declining slope of externalizing behavior was predicted by infant difficult temperament for mother reports only. Far‐field scattering of randomly deposited Au nanoparticles (NPs) is demonstrated as a physically unclonable optical function for anti‐counterfeit applications in which the scattering patterns are easily produced yet impractical to replicate. Colloidal metal NPs are superb components for nanoscale labels owing to their small dimensions and intense far‐field scattering visible at wavelengths that depend on colloidal size, shape, composition, and their local environment. The feasibility of Au NP depositions as nanofingerprints is presented using a simple pattern matching algorithm. These NPs offer extended functionality as environmental sensors. Taking advantage of the local refractive index dependent scattering wavelengths of metal NPs, a detectable color change is also demonstrated from a nanofingerprint comprised of Au and Ag NPs when placed in media with different refractive index. The facile deposition method coupled with the intense scattering and optical response of metal NPs provides physically unclonable tags (nanofingerprints) with the ability to serve as tamper‐evident and aging labels.  相似文献

Potential of NMR spectroscopy for the study of human amniotic fluid   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1D and 2D 800 MHz high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of human amniotic fluid (HAF) enabled the identification of approximately 50 metabolites. In addition, liquid chromatography-NMR and diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) allowed signal overlap to be reduced and the characterization of higher molecular weight (Mw) components, respectively. Indeed, the DOSY spectrum of a Mw >10 kDa HAF fraction enabled three protein families, differing in average Mw, to be detected and may therefore be of potential value in the study of disorder-related variations in HAF protein profiles. The effects of freeze-drying, storage at -20 or -70 degrees C, and freeze-thawing cycles on HAF compositional stability were investigated, as well as stability at room temperature (to account for overnight data acquisition runs). These data are the basis for establishing statistically validated correlations between HAF NMR data and any physiological disorders of the fetus/mother. Freeze-drying caused signal loss for urea, ethanol, and compounds resonating at 2.22 and 1.17 ppm. Storage at -70 degrees C or lower is recommended since only minor compositional changes were observed, affecting mainly acetate and pyruvate. Freeze-thaw cycles did not cause significant compositional changes, and room-temperature stability studies indicated a 4-5 h maximum period of handling/acquisition time to ensure HAF stability.  相似文献
