Answering queries using views: A survey   总被引:25,自引:0,他引:25  
The problem of answering queries using views is to find efficient methods of answering a query using a set of previously defined materialized views over the database, rather than accessing the database relations. The problem has recently received significant attention because of its relevance to a wide variety of data management problems. In query optimization, finding a rewriting of a query using a set of materialized views can yield a more efficient query execution plan. To support the separation of the logical and physical views of data, a storage schema can be described using views over the logical schema. As a result, finding a query execution plan that accesses the storage amounts to solving the problem of answering queries using views. Finally, the problem arises in data integration systems, where data sources can be described as precomputed views over a mediated schema. This article surveys the state of the art on the problem of answering queries using views, and synthesizes the disparate works into a coherent framework. We describe the different applications of the problem, the algorithms proposed to solve it and the relevant theoretical results. A novel sample holder that enables atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips to be mounted inside a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the purpose of characterizing the AFM tips is described. The holder provides quick and easy handling of tips by using a spring clip to hold them in place. The holder can accommodate two tips simultaneously in two perpendicular orientations, allowing both top and side view imaging of the tips by the SEM.  相似文献

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between art and urban boundaries using the case study of a fringe theatre festival in the Israeli mixed-city of Acre. While mixed cities today are understood as agglomerations of enclaves, maintained and reinforced by boundaries, urban designers and artists have used art as a culture-led regeneration strategy through which these boundaries may be breached. This study undermines the shared assumption of both fields: that art has the power to breach boundaries, by juxtaposing a city’s artistic activity with its segregation patterns and boundaries. Using super-positioning, the findings of two research methods have been integrated: urban research and ethnographic field work. The article shows that although the artistic activity in question is rooted in an avant-garde radical desire to subvert socioeconomic structures, it actually produces new versions and interpretations of the same segregations and boundaries in both space and society.  相似文献

The CHaracteristic-function-Enabled Source Separation (CHESS) method for independent component analysis (ICA) is based on approximate joint diagonalization (AJD) of Hessians of the observations' empirical log-characteristic-function, taken at selected off-origin “processing points”. As previously observed in other contexts, the AJD performance can be significantly improved by optimal weighting, using the inverse of the covariance matrix of all of the off-diagonal terms of the target-matrices. Fortunately, this apparently cumbersome weighting scheme takes a convenient form under the assumption that the mixture is already “nearly separated”, e.g., following some initial separation. We derive covariance expressions for the Sample-Hessian matrices, and show that under the near-separation assumption, the weight matrix takes a nearly block-diagonal form, conveniently exploited by the recently proposed WEighted Diagonalization using Gauss itErations (WEDGE) algorithm for weighted AJD. Using our expressions, the weight matrix can be estimated directly from the data—leading to our WeIghTed CHESS (WITCHESS) algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate how WITCHESS can lead to significant performance improvement, not only over unweighted CHESS, but also over other ICA methods.  相似文献

Oreochromis fishes exhibit variability of sex-determination (SD) genes whose characterization contributes to understanding of the sex differentiation network, and to effective tilapia farming, which requires all-male culture. However, O. niloticus (On) amh is the only master-key regulator (MKR) of SD that has been mapped (XY/XX SD-system on LG23). In O. aureus (Oa), LG3 controls a WZ/ZZ SD-system that has recently been delimited to 9.2 Mbp, with an embedded interval rich with female-specific variation, harboring two paics genes and banf2. Developing genetic markers within this interval and using a hybrid Oa stock that demonstrates no recombination repression in LG3, we mapped the critical SD region to 235 Kbp on the orthologous On physical map (p < 1.5 × 10−26). DNA-seq assembly and peak-proportion analysis of variation based on Sanger chromatograms allowed the characterization of copy-number variation (CNV) of banf2. Oa males had three exons capable of encoding 90-amino-acid polypeptides, yet in Oa females, we found an extra copy with an 89-amino-acid polypeptide and three non-conservative amino acid substitutions, designated as banf2w. CNV analysis suggested the existence of two to five copies of banf2 in diploidic Cichlidae. Disrupting the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (p < 4.2 × 10−3), banf2w was concordant with female determination in Oa and in three cichlids with LG3 WZ/ZZ SD-systems (O. tanganicae, O. hornorum and Pelmatolapia mariae). Furthermore, exclusive RNA-seq expression in Oa females strengthened the candidacy of banf2w as the long-sought LG3 SD MKR. As banf genes mediate nuclear assembly, chromatin organization, gene expression and gonad development, banf2w may play a fundamental role inducing female nucleus formation that is essential for WZ/ZZ SD.  相似文献

Progressive loss of muscle and muscle function is associated with significant fibrosis in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients. Halofuginone, an analog of febrifugine, prevents fibrosis in various animal models, including those of muscular dystrophies. Effects of (+)/(−)-halofuginone enantiomers on motor coordination and diaphragm histopathology in mdx mice, the mouse model for DMD, were examined. Four-week-old male mice were treated with racemic halofuginone, or its separate enantiomers, for 10 weeks. Controls were treated with saline. Racemic halofuginone-treated mice demonstrated better motor coordination and balance than controls. However, (+)-halofuginone surpassed the racemic form’s effect. No effect was observed for (−)-halofuginone, which behaved like the control. A significant reduction in collagen content and degenerative areas, and an increase in utrophin levels were observed in diaphragms of mice treated with racemic halofuginone. Again, (+)-halofuginone was more effective than the racemic form, whereas (−)-halofuginone had no effect. Both racemic and (+)-halofuginone increased diaphragm myofiber diameters, with no effect for (−)-halofuginone. No effects were observed for any of the compounds tested in an in-vitro cell viability assay. These results, demonstrating a differential effect of the halofuginone enantiomers and superiority of (+)-halofuginone, are of great importance for future use of (+)-halofuginone as a DMD antifibrotic therapy.  相似文献

The environmental characteristics of the brine and its impacts on the marine environment were always the “backyard” and the less concern while planning and operating RO desalination plants. The lack of drinking water in Israel made desalination a national goal. The first huge RO plant was initially operated in Israel on 2005 — 100 Mm3/y and by the end of 2010 305 Mm3/y potable water expected to be produced. Construction and installation of desalination plants requires applying suitable environmental solutions for protecting and preserving the marine and coastal environment from ruin or deterioration.

The Israeli environmental legislation is described including the marine environmental policy and regulations as well as the acquired operational experience during the last two years. Results from the first year of operation and monitoring are shown along with the new appearance of the red phenomenon discharge of VID desalination plant in Ashkelon.

The environmental policy based on the precautionary principle is performed and includes environmental requirements and guidelines for pretreatment, discharge composition, planning marine outfall, background and compliance marine monitoring program and discharge quality standards.  相似文献

Designing functional materials as electrode coatings to transduce high-quality information about redox molecules in biofluids is crucial for developing the next-generation medical devices. Rapidly analyzing the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) urinary levels can enable point-of-care testing for neuroendocrine tumors. A novel sensing electrodes array modified with biopolymer chitosan and electrocatalytic carbon nanotube films that can generate cross-reactive electrochemical signals from complex biofluids, such as undiluted urine, is presented. By generating cross-reactive signals, the feasibility of quantifying DA levels from unprocessed urine samples is demonstrated. The films’ electrochemical activity is characterized and modeled the additive effect of the main redox interferants in urine (norepinephrine and uric acid) on the generated electrochemical signals that overlap and mask the electrochemical signature of DA. Finally, the feasibility of successfully quantifying urinary DA levels is demonstrated by investigating two calibration approaches: 1) using a synthetic solution (1.15 µm root mean squared error (RMSE) and 4.2 µm  limit-of-detection (LoD) values), and 2) directly using the urine samples (2.5 µm RMSE and 9.3 µm LoD values). The outcome of this work will enhance the understanding of the overlapping and masking electrochemical signatures and their interactions with functional materials, providing better analytical tools to differentiate redox molecules in highly complex biofluids.  相似文献
