Powder metallurgical techniques have been employed to prepare the precursor billets in the preparation of Cu-15 vol pct Fe alloys by deformation processing. It has been demonstrated that by (1) using high-purity gas-atomized Cu powders blended with commercial high-purity Fe powders and (2) controlling the time/temperature processing conditions within specific limits, it is possible to produce Cu-Fe deformation-processed alloys with strength/conductivity properties matching those of Cu-Nb, Cu-Ta, and Cu-Cr alloys. Nuclisens HIV-1 QT is a new version of the NASBA HIV-1 QT assay for quantitation of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA in plasma. The specificity of this assay was 100% in one laboratory and 99%-with nonrepeatability of the initial false positive-in another. The test was linear between 2.0 and 6.0 log RNA copies per ml. According to the input HIV-1 RNA concentration, accuracy varied from -0.11 to +0.10 log RNA copy per ml and precision varied from 0.66 to 0.14 log RNA copy per ml. Reproducibility decreased when the HIV-1 RNA level was near the lower limit of quantitation of the test. HIV-1 RNA could be quantitated by Nuclisens HIV-1 QT in 36% (laboratory 1) and 24% (laboratory 2) of clinical samples with HIV-1 RNA levels lower than the lower limit of quantitation by NASBA HIV-1 QT. Nuclisens HIV-1 QT was not suitable for measurement of RNA from clade G and group O HIV-1 strains.  相似文献

Stiffness of subchondral proximal tibial trabecular bone is a factor in the stability of prostheses implanted into that bone. The stiffness of trabecular bone in osteoarthritis (OA) has been documented. Trabecular bone in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is osteopenic in numerous sites and morphologically abnormal in the proximal tibia. Reliable data on proximal tibial bone in RA are lacking, although 1 study failed to identify abnormalities. The purposes of this study were (1) to document the stiffness of the proximal tibial cancellous bone in patients with RA, (2) to determine the effect of angular deformity on bone stiffness in rheumatoid patients, and (3) to compare RA stiffness values with those in published reports for OA. Fifteen tibial plateau were obtained from patients with RA during surgery. Each plateau was horizontally seated in a mold and covered with cement. The plateau was divided into 6 regions, which were used to facilitate comparison between specimens and the existing literature. Indentation tests were conducted with a 4-mm-diameter cylindrical indentor controlled by an MTS machine. The indentor descended at a rate of 2 mm/min to a maximum depth of 1.0 mm; load and displacement data were digitally recorded. Stiffness was calculated from the slope of the linear region of the curve using best-fit linear regression. Where varus deformity was present, stiffness in the medial plateau was higher overall than for the other compartment; whereas in the case of valgus deformity, stiffness of the lateral side was significantly higher (P < .05 for each observation). In comparison to older normal specimens, both the medial compartment of the varus RA specimens (P < .01) and the posterolateral compartment of the valgus RA specimens (P < .01) had significantly lower stiffness. Comparison with OA specimens showed that in varus RA, the posteromedial region had significantly lower stiffness than in varus OA at the same site (P < .01). In valgus RA, the lateral region had significantly lower stiffness than in valgus OA at the same site (P < .01). The mean stiffness ratio of the valgus RA was significantly (P < .01) altered from normal, and for the varus RA, it was significantly (P < .01) different from normal posteriorly. The stiffness ratios for the varus RA were significantly (P < .01) different from those for varus OA; there was no difference between valgus RA and valgus OA. It is concluded that RA affected bone has significantly lower stiffness than normal and osteoarthritic bone. The loaded plateau is stiffer than the unloaded plateau in angular deformity, but is still less stiff than normal bone and osteoarthritic plateaus with corresponding deformities.  相似文献

Four studies examined the effects of divided attention in younger and older adults. Attention was divided at encoding or retrieval in free recall (Experiment 1), cued recall (Experiments 2 and 3), and recognition (Experiment 4). Dividing attention at encoding disrupted memory performance equally for the two age groups; by contrast, for both age groups, dividing attention at retrieval had little or no effect on memory performance. Secondary task reaction times (RTs) were slowed to a greater extent for the older adults than for the younger adults, especially at retrieval. Age-related differences in RTs costs at retrieval were largest in free recall, smaller in cued recall, and smallest in recognition. Large collaborative centers are a common model for accomplishing integrated environmental health research. These centers often include various types of scientific domains (e.g., chemistry, biology, bioinformatics) that are integrated to solve some of the nation's key economic or public health concerns. The Superfund Research Center (SRP) at Oregon State University (OSU) is one such center established in 2008 to study the emerging health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons while using new technologies both in the field and laboratory. With outside collaboration at remote institutions, success for the center as a whole depends on the ability to effectively integrate data across all research projects and support cores. Therefore, the OSU SRP center developed a system that integrates environmental monitoring data with analytical chemistry data and downstream bioinformatics and statistics to enable complete "source-to-outcome" data modeling and information management. This article describes the development of this integrated information management system that includes commercial software for operational laboratory management and sample management in addition to open-source custom-built software for bioinformatics and experimental data management.  相似文献

Loss of precious metals from a Pt-10 wt% Rh alloy was studied at 1300° C in refractory oxides and fused quartz environments. After 60 and 150 h annealings, samples exposed to gaseous environments showed significant weight loss. The surface was attacked and characterized by micron-sized pits, as well as river-like striations. The pits were found to be enriched with silicon and/or aluminium depending upon the heating environment. Laser Raman microprobe identified that the major compound formed in the pits is -cristobalite.Direct solid state contact of Pt-Rh with Al2O3 and SiO2 showed interactions between materials. The interaction was more extensive between Pt-Rh with SiO2 than with Al2O3. On the other hand, no evidence of interaction except pitting and striation was observed on Pt-Rh when exposed to a vapour environment.The presence of pits and striation patterns indicated that refractory oxides attacked Pt-Rh under atmospheric conditions, and gave rise to the weight loss. Calculation of weight loss by an oxidation mechanism shows one to two orders of magnitude lower value than the actual weight loss. A new loss mechanism is proposed and discussed in this article.  相似文献

Men and equipment in space vehicles in low earth orbit are exposed to a wide variety of radiations, but the majority of the dose is due to trapped protons, which have energies of the order of 100 MeV and are low LET particles. These high energy particles produce nuclear fragmentation with high LET secondaries that may be responsible for a significant fraction of dose equivalent. In order to understand better the biological effectiveness of this radiation environment, a portable tissue equivalent proportional counter spectrometer has been developed that automatically records the distribution of energy in a small tissue-like site as a function of time. This instrument weighs about 700 g and will be flown on a number of future space shuttle flights.  相似文献

The specific heat at constant flux densityC B was measured to study the thermodynamic properties of the mixed state of a type II superconductor at low reduced temperaturet=T/T c . The sample was a Pb0.96Tl0.04 alloy having =0.97. The results are thatC B increases nearly linearly withB throughout the mixed state, with a discontinuous jump down to the normal state value at the upper critical field. Att<0.21 a small, positive curvature ofC B versusB is consistent with Eilenberger's calculations. However, this positive curvature is not consistent with fluxoid interaction models for low flux density. These measurements supplement previous measurements fort<0.5 using isothermal calorimetry on the same sample. Taken together, the two experiments indicate that, at a givenT, the incremental entropy per fluxoid is nearly constant for allB.
