The effect of protein and birch bark powder (BBP) content of forage on food consumption and growth of root voles (Microtus oeconomus) was studied by feeding young voles with eight different diets for two weeks. Voles ate more when the protein content of forage was moderate (6%) or low (3%), and when BBP was added to the diets, as compared to a high (12%) protein diet without BBP addition. On high and moderate protein diets voles gained weight, whereas on low protein diets they lost weight. Addition of BBP caused reduced growth or weight loss. Consuming a diet with moderate (6%) protein and high BBP (20%) resulted in high mortality (9 of 10 died). These results show that root voles need at least 6% protein for growth and that the effect of birch bark depends on the protein content of the forage.  相似文献

The concept of affordances has been increasingly applied to the study of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in organizational contexts. However, almost no research operationalizes affordances, limiting comparisons and programmatic research. This article briefly reviews conceptualizations and possibilities of affordances in general and for media, then introduces the concept of organizational media affordances as organizational resources. Analysis of survey data from a large Nordic media organization identified six reliable and valid organizational media affordances: pervasiveness, editability, self-presentation, searchability, visibility, and awareness. Eight media scales based on frequency of use of 10 media within each of three organization levels were differentially associated with these affordances. The conceptualization, measurement approach, and results from this study provide the foundation for considerable future organizational communication and ICT research.  相似文献

Sustainable development in both the developed and developing world has the common fundamental themes of advancing economic and social prosperity while protecting and restoring natural systems. While many recent efforts have been undertaken to transfer knowledge from the developed to the developing world to achieve a more sustainable future, indigenous knowledge that often originates in developing nations also can contribute significantly to this global dialogue. Selected case studies are presented to describe important knowledge, methodologies, techniques, principles, and practices for sustainable development emerging from developing countries in two critical challenge areas to sustainability: water and energy. These, with additional analysis and quantification, can be adapted and expanded for transfer throughout the developed and developing world in advancing sustainability. A common theme in all of the case studies presented is the integration of natural processes and material flows into the anthropogenic system. Some of these techniques, originating in rural settings, have recently been adapted for use in cities, which is especially important as the global trend of urban population growth accelerates. Innovations in science and technology, specifically applied to two critical issues of today, water and energy, are expected to fundamentally shift the type and efficiency of energy and materials utilized to advance prosperity while protecting and restoring natural systems.  相似文献

The antioxidant effects of α- and γ-tocopherols were evaluated in a model system based on the autooxidation of purified sunflower oil (p-SFO) triacylglycerols at 55°C for 7 d. Both tocopherols were found to cause more than 90% reduction in peroxide value when present at concentrations >20 ppm. α-Tocopherol was a better antioxidant than γ-tocopherol at concentrations ≤40 ppm but a worse antioxidant at concentrations >200 ppm. Neither α- nor γ-tocopherol showed a prooxidant effect at concentrations as high as 2000 ppm. The amount of tocopherols consumed during the course of oxidation was positively correlated to the initial concentration of tocopherols, and the correlation was stronger for α- than for γ-tocopherol. This correlation suggested that, besides reactions with peroxyl radicals, destruction of tocopherols may be attributed to unknown side reactions. Addition of FeSO4, as a prooxidant, caused a 12% increase in the peroxide value of p-SFO in the absence of tocopherols. When tocopherols were added together with FeSO4, some increase in peroxide value was observed for samples containing 200, 600 or 1000 ppm of α- but not γ-tocopherol. The addition of FeSO4, however, caused an increase in the amount of α- and γ-tocopherols destroyed and led to stronger positive correlations between the amount of tocopherols destroyed during oxidation and initial concentration of tocopherols. No synergistic or antagonistic interaction was observed when α- and γ-tocopherols were added together to autooxidizing p-SFO.  相似文献

The antioxidant effect of the flavonoids quercetin, myricetin, kaemferol, (+)‐catechin and rutin on methyl linoleate oxidation was investigated. In addition, the synergistic effects of flavonoids and α‐tocopherol were studied. Oxidation was monitored by conjugated diene measurement and by determining the formation of hydroperoxide isomers by HPLC. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids in non‐polar methyl linoleate differ from that previously reported in water‐containing systems, such as LDL and liposome systems. The activity of antioxidants (10–1000 μM ) measured by hydroperoxide formation decreased in the order: myricetin>quercetin>α‐tocopherol>(+)‐catechin >kaemferol=rutin. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids increased as the number of phenolic hydroxyl groups increased. In addition to the number of hydroxyl groups, other structural features such as the 2,3 double bond in the C‐ring and a glycoside moiety in the molecule had an effect on the antioxidant activity. Myricetin and rutin, especially had a synergistic effect with α‐tocopherol. Myricetin, quercetin and rutin protected α‐tocopherol from decomposition, myricetin being the most protective. The relative hydrogen‐donating activity measured by the ratio of cis,trans‐ to trans,transhydroperoxide isomers formed during oxidation decreased in the order: α‐tocopherol >myricetin>quercetin. Hydroperoxide isomeric distribution of the samples containing kaemferol or rutin did not differ from the control. Thus, although α‐tocopherol was the most effective hydrogendonor, myricetin and quercetin were more effective antioxidants in inhibiting the hydroperoxide formation in methyl linoleate. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Besides serving as a structural membrane component and intermediate of the glycerolipid metabolism, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has a prominent role as a signaling molecule through its binding to LPA receptors at the cell surface. Extracellular LPA is primarily produced from lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) through the activity of secreted lysophospholipase D, autotaxin (ATX). The degradation of extracellular LPA to monoacylglycerol is mediated by lipid phosphate phosphatases (LPPs) at the cell membrane. This review summarizes and interprets current literature on the role of the ATX-LPA-LPP3 axis in the regulation of energy homeostasis, insulin function, and adiposity at baseline and under conditions of obesity. We also discuss how the ATX-LPA-LPP3 axis influences obesity-related metabolic complications, including insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and cardiomyopathy.  相似文献
