Cavitation erosion (CE) of various components in hydroturbines is a critical issue. Several attempts have been made in the past to counter CE through various surface modification techniques. In this study, a novel attempt has been made to modify the surface properties of hydroturbine steel with the aid of friction stir processing (FSP). Metallurgical characterization of the processed steel was undertaken with the help of XRD, SEM/EDS, EBSD and optical microscopy. For mechanical characterization micro-hardness and cavitation erosion studies were conducted. EBSD results confirmed the presence of grains in nano range. Processed steel showed gain in hardness of the order of 160?% in comparison to unprocessed steel. XRD results show a significant variation in the type and quantity of various phases in pre- and post processed steel. It was observed that FSPed steel showed a significant improvement in the erosion resistance in contrast to the unprocessed steel.  相似文献

Though bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is extensively used as a photoactive material, its performance in harnessing solar energy is limited by ineffective separation of photo-excited charge carriers. We demonstrate here a concept of n-n+ homojunction of BiVO4/BiV1-xMnxO4-y, which improves its charge separation efficiency. Using first-principles theoretical calculations, we determine the effect of Mn substitution on oxygen vacancy formation energies and associated changes in the electronic structure of BiVO4. Showing that Mn substitution pushes the Fermi level of BiVO4 towards its conduction band, we predict that the associated enhanced bending of bands at the homojunction (BiVO4/BiV1-xMnxO4-y) facilitates efficient separation of charge carriers. With Mott-Schottky experiments, we verify the increased band bending at the n-n+ homojunction, and show that the maximum photocurrent density measured in a sample with n-n+ homojunction is ten times higher than that obtained of the pristine sample. Secondly, Mn substitution in BiVO4 also reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy, promoting higher concentration of O-vacancies, further enhancing the photoelectrochemical response.  相似文献

Location aware computing is popularized and location information use has important due to huge application of mobile computing devices and local area wireless networks. In this paper, we have proposed a method based on Semi-supervised Locally Linear Embedding for indoor wireless networks. Previous methods for location estimation in indoor wireless networks require a large amount of labeled data for learning the radio map. However, labeled instances are often difficult, expensive, or time consuming to obtain, as they require great efforts, meanwhile unlabeled data may be relatively easy to collect. So, the use of semi-supervised learning is more feasible. In the experiment 101 access points (APs) have been deployed so, the RSS vector received by the mobile station has large dimensions (i.e. 101). At first, we use Locally Linear Embedding to reduce the dimensions of data, and then we use semi-supervised learning algorithm to learn the radio map. The algorithm performs nonlinear mapping between the received signal strengths from nearby access points and the user??s location. It is shown that the proposed scheme has the advantage of robustness and scalability, and is easy in training and implementation. In addition, the scheme exhibits superior performance in the nonline-of-sight (NLOS) situation. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed SSLLE algorithm.  相似文献

Membrane proteins are involved in a number of important biological functions. Yet, they are poorly understood from the structure and folding point of view. The external environment being drastically different from that of globular proteins, the intra-protein interactions in membrane proteins are also expected to be different. Hence, statistical potentials representing the features of inter-residue interactions based exclusively on the structures of membrane proteins are much needed. Currently, a reasonable number of structures are available, making it possible to undertake such an analysis on membrane proteins. In this study we have examined the inter-residue interaction propensities of amino acids in the membrane spanning regions of the alpha-helical membrane (HM) proteins. Recently we have shown that valuable information can be obtained on globular proteins by the evaluation of the pair-wise interactions of amino acids by classifying them into different structural environments, based on factors such as the secondary structure or the number of contacts that a residue can make. Here we have explored the possible ways of classifying the intra-protein environment of HM proteins and have developed scoring functions based on different classification schemes. On evaluation of different schemes, we find that the scheme which classifies amino acids to different intra-contact environment is the most promising one. Based on this classification scheme, we also redefine the hydrophobicity scale of amino acids in HM proteins.  相似文献

Three polymer‐anchored metal complexes (Co, Cu, and Pd) were synthesized and characterized. The catalytic performance of these complexes was tested for the oxidation of olefins and aromatic alcohols. These complexes showed excellent catalytic activity and high selectivity. These complexes selectively gave epoxides and aldehydes from olefins and alcohols, respectively. Individually, the effect of various solvents, oxidants, substrate oxidant molar ratios, temperatures, and catalyst amounts for the oxidation of cyclohexene and benzyl alcohol were studied. Under optimized reaction conditions, 96, 81, and 71% conversions of cyclohexene and 86, 79, and 73% conversions of benzyl alcohol were obtained with Co(II), Cu(II), and Pd(II) catalysts, respectively. A new calorimeter to measure specific heat of indigenously prepared granular activated carbon (AC) for application in a refrigeration system based on gas adsorption–desorption mechanism is presented. This calorimeter allows specific heat measurements in high (305.5–317.8 K) as well as low (254.6–264 K) temperature ranges. The specific heat of prepared AC on measurement using developed calorimeter has been found to be 1.062 J g?1 K?1. Preparation, instrumental analyses and influence of various physical properties of AC on its specific heat have also been discussed. Characterisation results of AC demonstrate that it can be efficiently used in such cold producing system down to refrigeration and cryogenic temperature. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

We have carried out scanning tunneling microscopy experiments under ultrahigh vacuum condition to study the roughness of pristine as well as ion-bombarded Si(1 0 0) surfaces and of ultrathin Ge films deposited on them. One half of a Si(1 0 0) sample (with native oxide layer) was irradiated at room temperature using 45 keV Si ions at a fluence of 4 × 1015 ions/cm2 while the other half was masked. STM measurements were then carried out on the unirradiated as well as the irradiated half of the sample. Root-mean-square (rms) roughness of both the halves of the sample has been measured as a function of STM scan size. Below a length scale of ∼30 nm we observe surface smoothing and surface roughening is observed for length scales above this value. However, the surface is self-affine up to length scales of ∼200 nm and the observed roughness exponent of 0.46 ± 0.04 is comparable to earlier cases of ion sputtering studies where only roughening [J. Krim, I. Heyvart, D.V. Haesendonck, Y. Bruynseraede, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70 (1993) 57] or only smoothing [D.K. Goswami, B.N. Dev, Phys. Rev. B 68 (2003) 033401] was observed. Preliminary results involving morphology for Ge deposition on clean ion-irradiated and pristine Si(1 0 0) surfaces are presented.  相似文献

We describe a trust-based data management framework enabling mobile devices to access the distributed computation, storage, and sensory resources available in pervasive computing environments. Available resources include those in the fixed surrounding infrastructure as well as services offered by other nearby mobile devices. We take a holistic approach that considers data trust, security, and privacy and focus on the collaborative mechanisms providing a trustworthy data management platform in an ad hoc network. The framework is based on a pack formation mechanism that enables collaborative peer interactions using context information and landmarks. A pack provides a routing substrate allowing devices to find reliable information sources and coordinated pro-active and reactive mechanisms to detect and respond to malicious activity. Consequently, a pack forms a foundation for distributed trust management and data intensive interactions. We describe our data management framework with an emphasis on pack formation in mobile ad hoc networks and present preliminary results from simulation experiments.  相似文献
