Road Oriented Traffic Information System for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks

Over the last few years, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have gained popularity for their interesting applications. To make efficient routing decisions, VANET routing protocols require road traffic density information for which they use density estimation schemes. This paper presents a distributed mechanism for road vehicular density estimation that considers multiple road factors, such as road length and junctions. Extensive simulations are carried out to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed technique. Simulation results suggested that, the proposed technique is more accurate compared to the existing technique. Moreover, it facilitate VANET routing protocols to increase packet delivery ratio and reduce end-to-end delay.

The Lipids of Schistosomes During their Various Stages of Growth

Presence of appreciable amount of squalene in the intermediate stages of both species of schistosomes was detected. Squalene was found to be absent in adult S. mansoni worm. The major components of the developmental stages of schistosomes were assessed as well. Chromatographic separation of lipid classes of the livers of biomphalaria snails, both infected with S. mansoni and uninfected was also carried out.     

Motion-compensated DCT temporal filters for efficient spatio-temporal scalable video coding

Although most of the proposals for implementing motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) schemes are based on the wavelet transform, in this paper, we propose an MCTF framework based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Using DCT decimation and interpolation, several temporal decomposition structures named motion-compensated DCT temporal filters (MCDCT-TF) are introduced. These structures are able to employ filters of any length with particular emphasis on 5/3 DCT and 7/4 DCT. The proposed MCDCT-TF and the two-dimensional (2D) DCT decimation technique are incorporated into H.264/AVC to provide spatio-temporal scalability. Compared with the current MCTF-based lifting schemes such as Haar, and 5/3 wavelet filters, simulation results show that the proposed MCDCT-TF utilizing longer tap DCT filters achieves a significant improvement in coding gain. The impact of odd/even group of frames, the decimation/interpolation ratios, and motion-compensated connectivity on the MCDCT-TF performance are also analyzed. Moreover, simulation results show that the performance of the presented scalable video coding is close to the single layer H.264/AVC and is slightly inferior to the temporal scalability supported in JSVM, the state-of-the-art scalable video coding standard, that gets its gain from Hierarchical B-pictures. However, our spatio-temporal coding scheme outperforms the spatio-temporal supported in JSVM even if it uses hierarchical B-pictures to improve its gain.     

Observing Proteins as Single Molecules Encapsulated in Surface‐Tethered Polymeric Nanocontainers

Protein unfolding inside immobilized polymerosomes : One of the most interesting properties of polymeric vesicles is their remarkable stability against extreme temperatures and osmotic stress, and their longevity even under harsh environmental conditions. We have demonstrated, in an application on protein folding, that surface‐tethered polymerosomes are suitable for performing time‐resolved single molecule studies with encapsulated proteins, as illustrated here.

     

Purification and Characteristics of Feruloyl Esterase from Aspergillus awamori G-2 Strain

ABSTRACT:  For food industry production processes and other uses, a mold that produces high levels of feruloyl esterase was obtained from laboratory mold collections and other sources. It was Aspergillus awamori G-2 that produces high levels of feruloyl esterase. The feruloyl esterase was purified using ion-exchange chromatography, size-exclusion chromatography, and HPLC chromatography. The enzyme was identified as a monomer protein using size-exclusion chromatography. Its optimum temperature and pH were, respectively, 40 °C and pH 5. Its activity was stable at pH 3 to 5. The enzyme was combined with xylan and starch, but it was absorbed by cellulose. The km of the feruloyl esterase was 0.0019% (0.01 mM). The enzyme showed stable activity at pH 3 and 50 °C, making this enzyme useful for food production.     

Small amount TiB2 addition into B4C through sputter deposition and hot pressing

Small amount of TiB₂ (<5 wt%) was added into B₄C through a novel method that combines the use of sputter deposition and hot pressing. Sputter deposition provided more uniform dispersion of TiB₂ grains with smaller grain sizes as compared to the conventional particulate mixing. Small amount TiB₂ addition demonstrated to be an effective way for improving the fracture behavior and toughness of B₄C while not sacrificing its outstanding lightweight property to a large extent: 2.3 wt% TiB₂ addition brought 15% improvement in indentation fracture toughness while resulting in less than 2% increase in density. The improvement can be attributed to the combination of crack impeding by TiB₂ grains and crack deflection at the B₄C–TiB₂ interfaces. TiB₂ also played as grain growth inhibitor resulting in a slight increase (2%) in Vickers hardness. Another intention of employing sputter deposition was to modify the grain boundary of B₄C; however, neither formation of Ti-containing phase nor Ti segregation has been observed at grain boundaries likely due to the poor wettability of B₄C.
